Helicopters deliver relief supplies in Shantou, China Full Story: Four helicopters were dispatched Tuesday to deliver relief supplies in the flood-hit coastal city of Shantou, south China's Guangdong Province. Rainstorm-triggered flooding has ravaged the city for the last few days, with seven-hundredand-seventy-two-thousand people affected by the disaster. In the low-lying Chaonan District, downstream from the flooded Lianjiang River, people were trapped in buildings surrounded by floodwater. It was difficult for the rescue teams to get to them because all the main roads had been inundated. To make sure the flood victims have enough food and drinking water, the local government launched the air operation to deliver nine tons of relief supplies. More than fifty-thousand residents in 13 low-lying villages have suffered from severe inundation in the worst-hit town of Chendian. Twenty-thousand have been relocated, while the rest are still stranded in their houses in flood. The local People's Liberation Army garrison used motorboats and rubber dinghies to help rescue flood victims. About 60 temporary shelters have been set up in schools, office buildings and large factories. The Shantou bureau of water resources says it will be difficult to drain the floodwater, due to the pressure of flood discharge from the Lianjiang River as well as the high sea level in the estuary.
