Kaali is a group of 9 meteorite craters in the village of Kaali on the Estonian island of Saaremaa. Most recent estimates put its formation 3470 to 3545 years ago. Before that is was thought that craters formed more than 4,000 years ago (based on the age of the sediments at the bottom of crater lake), and possibly as long as 7,600 years ago (estimates vary). It was created by an impact event and is possibly the only known major impact event that has occurred in a populated area.
Prior to the 1930s there were several hypothesis about the origin of the crater, including theories involving vulcanism and karst processes. Its meteoritic origins were first conclusively demonstrated by Ivan Reinvald in 1928, 1933 and 1937.
The impact is thought to have happened in the Holocene period, more than 4,000 years ago. Analysis of silicate spherules in Estonian bogs show that the possible age of the impact craters could be approximately 7,600 years. Other studies show more recent ages, even 7th century BC. The craters were formed by a meteor with an estimated impact velocity of between 10 and 20 km/s with a total mass of between 20 and 80 metric tonnes. The meteor arrived from the north-east.

We visit the crater of Kaali, which hosts a perfectly round-shaped lake all frozen at this time of year.

Kaalin meteoriitin putoamisen arvioitu aika on 7500-7600 vuotta sitten. Kraaterin putoaminen jo asutetulle Saarenmaalle aiheutti suuria tuhoja, joita on verrattu pienen atomipommin säjähdykseen. Meteoriitti hajosi kappaleiksi 5-10 km korkeudessa ja satoi maanpinnalle paloina, joista suurimmat aiheuttivat yhden halkaisijaltaan 110 m leveän 22 m syvän kraaterin sekä 8 pienempää kraateria. Hyvä tietää: Maailman suurkraaterien joukossa Kaalin kraateri on kahdeksannella sijalla. Kaalin meteoriittikraaterikenttä Saarenmaalla on Viron harvinaisin luononähtävyys ja samalla koko Euraasian vaikuttavin kraaterikenttä. An investigative Look into the recent Symbolism of Kali all around us. In Devi Mahatmya, Kali unfurls her tongue in her role as the ultimate deliverer called upon to salvage a situation that seems hopelessly out of control. She is summoned by Durga herself to destroy the demon Rakta-bija, whose name means 'blood-seed'. The demon Rakta-bija had the magical ability to produce a double of himself instantly every time a drop of his blood fell to the ground. Having wounded Rakta-bija with a variety of weapons, Durga and her assistants, a fierce band of warriors known as the Matrikas, find they have worsened the situation: as Rakta-bija bleeds more profusely from his wounds, the battlefield gets filled with Rakta-bija duplicates. Desperate, Durga summons Kali, who spreads her tongue across the...
The water from this lake is not potable as it is salty. One can easily see it is bowl shaped with tall boundaries of hills. These surrounding hills host rich vegetation and wild animals. In the interior ie on the outshirts of the lake one can see age old temples in a dilapidated state, however, one among them is 'Kamalja Mandir', which is still being worshiped by devotees. One has to treck downwards and walk to visit this temple.
