The Fourth Estate: A Novel on Media Empires, Based on Rupert Murdoch & Robert Maxwell (1996)
The Fourth Estate is a 1996 novel by Jeffrey Archer. It chronicles the lives of two media barons, Richard Armstrong and Keith Townsend, from their starkly contrasting childhoods to their ultimate battle to build the world's biggest media empire. The book is based on two real life media barons - Robert Maxwell and Rupert Murdoch, who fought to control the newspaper market in Britain. (Murdoch had bought The Sun and News of the World and later Times Newspapers Ltd and Maxwell bought the Daily Mirror and the other newspapers in its group.). The concept of the fourth estate is in essence the press as a watchdog on other powerful institutions or "estates", the original three estates in England and later the United Kingdom being the Lords Spiritual (of the Church of England), the Lords Temporal, and the commons. The fourth estate is charged with keeping an honest watch on activities of the other states and itself. These duties would help democratic societies function properly, openly, and honestly. Debate still flourishes as to whether or not this ever operated (or operates) as it was intended. It also shows a battle between two strong characters from differing backgrounds, who are willing to take endless risks. Sarah Lyall, in The New York Times, thought the work contained "leaden dialogue", but despite the "tantalizing echoes" of Armstrong and Townsend's real life models, the two men "seem about as vivid as bureaucrats in a wire-service story". Hugo Barnacle found evidence of a "dry sense of humour", but asserted that "Archer doesn't do insight or atmosphere, and gives the imagination very few cues." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fourth_Estate_(novel) Ian Robert Maxwell, MC (10 June 1923 -- 5 November 1991) was a Czechoslovakian-born British media proprietor and Member of Parliament (MP). He rose from poverty to build an extensive publishing empire. His death revealed huge discrepancies in his companies' finances, including the Mirror Group pension fund, which Maxwell had fraudulently misappropriated. He escaped from Nazi occupation, joining the Czechoslovak Army in exile in World War II and then fighting in the British Army where he was decorated. After the war he worked in publishing, building up Pergamon Press to a major publishing house. After six years as an MP during the 1960s, he again put all his energy into business, successively buying the British Printing Corporation, Mirror Group Newspapers and Macmillan, Inc, among other publishing companies. He had a flamboyant lifestyle, living in Headington Hill Hall in Oxford from which he often flew in his helicopter, and sailing in his luxury yacht, the Lady Ghislaine. He was notably litigious and often embroiled in controversy, including about his support for Israel at the time of its War of Independence in 1948. In 1989, he had to sell successful businesses including Pergamon Press to cover some of his enormous debts, and in 1991 he was found dead, floating in the Atlantic Ocean having apparently fallen overboard from his yacht. He was given what amounted to a state funeral in Israel. His death triggered the collapse of his publishing empire as banks called in loans. His sons briefly struggled to keep the business together, but failed as the news emerged that Maxwell had stolen hundreds of millions of pounds from his own companies' pension funds. The Maxwell companies applied for bankruptcy protection in 1992. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Maxwell- published: 24 Feb 2014

Oprah Winfrey on Receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2013)
Oprah Gail Winfrey (born January 29, 1954) is an American media proprietor, talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist. Winfrey is best known for her multi-award-winning talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show which was the highest-rated program of its kind in history and was nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011. She has been ranked the richest African-American of the 20th century the greatest black philanthropist in American history. She is currently North America's only black billionaire. She is also, according to some assessments, the most influential woman in the world. In 2013, Oprah Winfrey was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. Winfrey was born into poverty in rural Mississippi to a teenage single mother and later raised in an inner-city Milwaukee neighborhood. She experienced considerable hardship during her childhood, saying she was raped at age nine and became pregnant at 14; her son died in infancy.[12] Sent to live with the man she calls her father, a barber in Tennessee, Winfrey landed a job in radio while still in high school and began co-anchoring the local evening news at the age of 19. Her emotional ad-lib delivery eventually got her transferred to the daytime-talk-show arena, and after boosting a third-rated local Chicago talk show to first place,[13] she launched her own production company and became internationally syndicated. Credited with creating a more intimate confessional form of media communication,[14] she is thought to have popularized and revolutionized[14][15] the tabloid talk show genre pioneered by Phil Donahue,[14] which a Yale study says broke 20th-century taboos and allowed LGBT people to enter the mainstream.[16][17] By the mid-1990s, she had reinvented her show with a focus on literature, self-improvement, and spirituality. Though criticized for unleashing a confession culture, promoting controversial self-help ideas,[18] and an emotion-centered approach[19] she is often praised for overcoming adversity to become a benefactor to others.[20] From 2006 to 2008, her support of Barack Obama, by one estimate, delivered over a million votes in the close 2008 Democratic primary race.[21] In 2004, Winfrey became the first black person to rank among the 50 most generous Americans[167] and she remained among the top 50 until 2010.[168] By 2012 she had given away about $400 million to educational causes.[169] As of 2012, Winfrey had also given over 400 scholarships to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.[169] Winfrey was the recipient of the first Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the 2002 Emmy Awards for services to television and film. To celebrate two decades on national TV, and to thank her employees for their hard work, Winfrey took her staff and their families (1065 people in total) on vacation to Hawaii in the summer of 2006.[170] In 2013, Winfrey donated $12 million to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.[171] President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom later that same year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oprah_winfrey- published: 05 Dec 2013

This was the epitome of the approach. Gina Rinehart was attempting to buy a big stake in Fairfax. There was talk that she'd ruin the papers. We challenged agencies to come up with ads to make media-proprietor-Gina look like a great thing. This one did it by borrowing all the Qantas tricks and proving that everything is twice as convincing when you sing it. Everyone is on the sell. Tyrants. Sports stars. Actors. Criminals. Politicians. Deities. Charities. Entire nations. They're all trying to persuade us to think, buy or do things that we weren't thinking, buying or doing yesterday. Australia's favourite comedian host Wil Anderson is joined by regulars Todd Sampson and Russel Howcroft, along with some of worlds smartest communications experts. She experienced considerable hardship during her childhood, saying she was raped at age nine and became pregnant at 14; her son died in infancy.[10] Sent to live with the man she calls her father, a barber in Tennessee, Winfrey landed a job in radio while still in high school and began co-anchoring the local evening news at the age of 19. Her emotional ad-lib delivery eventually got her transferred to the daytime-talk-show arena, and after boosting a third-rated local Chicago talk show to first place,[11] she launched her own production company and became internationally syndicated.Celebrity interviews In 1993, Winfrey hosted a rare prime-time interview with Michael Jackson, which became the fourth most watched event in American television history as well as the most watched interview ever, with an audience of 36.5 million.[51] On December 1, 2005, Winfrey appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to promote the new Broadway musical The Color Purple,[52][dead link] of which she was a producer, joining the host for the first time in 16 years. The episode was hailed by some as the "television event of the decade" and helped Letterman attract his largest audience in more than 11 years: 13.45 million viewers.[53] Although a much-rumored feud was said to have been the cause of the rift, both Winfrey and Letterman balked at such talk. "I want you to know, it's really over, whatever you thought was happening", said Winfrey. On September 10, 2007, Letterman made his first appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, as its season premiere was filmed in New York City.[54] In 2006, rappers Ludacris, 50 Cent and Ice Cube criticized Winfrey for what they perceived as an anti-hip hop bias. In an interview with GQ magazine, Ludacris said that Winfrey gave him a "hard time" about his lyrics, and edited comments he made during an appearance on her show with the cast of the film Crash. He also said that he wasn't initially invited on the show with the rest of the cast.[55] Winfrey responded by saying that she is opposed to rap lyrics that "marginalize women", but enjoys some artists, including Kanye West, who appeared on her show. She said she spoke with Ludacris backstage after his appearance to explain her position and said she understood that his music was for entertainment purposes, but that some of his listeners might take it literally. In September 2008, Winfrey received criticism after Matt Drudge of the Drudge Report[56] reported that Winfrey refused to have Sarah Palin on her show, allegedly because of Winfrey's support for Barack Obama.[57] Winfrey denied the report, maintaining that there never was a discussion regarding Palin's appearing on her show.[57] She said that after she made public her support for Obama, she decided that she would not let her show be used as a platform for any of the candidates.[57] Although Obama appeared twice on her show, those appearances were prior to his declaring himself a candidate. Winfrey added that Palin would make a fantastic guest and that she would love to have her on the show after the election, which she did on November 18, 2009.[57] In 2009, Winfrey was criticized for allowing actress Suzanne Somers to appear on her show to discuss hormone treatments that are not accepted by mainstream medicine.[58] Critics have also suggested that Winfrey is not tough enough when questioning celebrity guests or politicians whom she appears to like.[59] Lisa de Moraes, a media columnist for The Washington Post, stated, "Oprah doesn't do followup questions unless you're an author who's embarrassed her by fabricating portions of a supposed memoir she's plugged for her book club."[60]- published: 06 Sep 2013

The Pressman
About eight months ago, I was preparing for South by SouthWest and realized I needed some business cards. I wanted to do more than just order them online so I looked around for a local printer who could work with different papers and methods. I was also dying to see a real working linotype to quench my thirst for anything typography. This lead me to scouring google for local printers. Eventually I found a guy about 100 miles away who maintains a little linotype museum of sorts in his garage. After some e-mails, he recommend someone who, as it turns out, is right in my own town, BnS Letterpress.
Run by Bob Giles, a semi-retired third generation pressman, BnS Letterpress is a small printing outfit operating in what used to be a backyard garage. More that just a small printshop, BnS and its proprietor are pieces of printing history. The presses, the working Type-31 linotype, the endless drawers of fonts and sorts, et al were mostly plucked from dead or dying newspapers around Lane and Linn county and all are in good working order. This place is a true type-geek's paradise.
After some e-mails, Bob was great enough to invite me and my entire Designing for Media class from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication for a tour. On that trip, and when I went for a private tour / business card expedition, I brought along my Canon 7D to take some video and interview Bob.
Months later, I finally got around to stringing these clips together. It was a very memorable experience, and Bob is an absolute wealth of information and great stories. The archival b-roll is from archive.org, which a has nice handful of printing and linotype movies.
Shot entirely on a Canon 7D. I wish now that I had invested the time to get a light kit as I am unhappy with the high-ISO performance when making 60P footage.

My name is Alex CF, and I am the curator and custodian of the Merrylin Cryptid collection. The study and documentation of the evolution and biology of unclassified species and research pertaining to prehistoric human and non human civilization.
In 2006, a trust was set up to analyze and collate a huge number of wooden crates found sealed in the basement of a London townhouse that was due to be demolished. Seemingly untouched since the 1940′s, the crates contained over 5000 specimens of flora and fauna, collected, dissected, and preserved by many forgotten scientists, professors and explorers of obscure cultures and species. The collection also housed many artifacts of curious origin, fragments of civilizations that once ruled the earth, of ideas and belief systems better left in the past.
But the most curious aspect of this discovery was the man responsible for its existence – the enigmatic, mysterious gentlemen that had gathered together a wealth of relics that challenged our understanding of nature; of species that had never been witnessed by the modern world, of objects which defied physical laws,
Lord and Professor Thomas Theodore Merrylin.
Born in 1782 to a rich aristocratic family, Thomas followed in his fathers footsteps of esoteric natural history, investing in profitable companies to fund his travels across the world, seeking out these illusive animals which hid in forgotten continents or darkened crevices, away from prying human eyes.
They traveled together until the death of his father turned Thomas into a recluse, seeking solace in his work and befriending no one. He tutored himself in the grand Library at Merrylin house, yet also studied at Gower street once the university had been established. Even then, he isolated himself from other students.
A bizarre quality of Merrylin was his apparent permanent youthfulness. Even in his 80′s, he still resembled a 40 year old, albeit of odd complexion, and his few bizarre forays into the eyes of the media only furthered his infamy. He was accused of practicing dark arts to prolong his life. Yet, he did befriend eminent scholars, who helped calm such rumors – scholars who encouraged him to share his collection with the world. In 1899, he took a small portion of his specimens on tour across America. Conservative attitudes of the time condemned these creatures, calling them blasphemous. His reaction was severe and the tour was canceled before it reached California. He returned to England and fell into obscurity, until 1942.
The Tunbridge Orphanage for boys was contacted by a man purporting to be Thomas Theodore Merrylin, in the spring of that year. He wished to donate a sizable London town house to the Orphanage for use once the war was over, and children returned. The only proviso was that the basement of the house never be opened and the house never sold. The Orphanage stood by this promise, until absolved in the 60′s and the existence of the cellar forgotten. Sealed behind two brick walls, the door was only found by chance when the foundations were checked prior to demolition. The Thomas Merrylin pictured in a local newspaper, handing over the documents for ownership to the new proprietor was in his forties. By this time, Merrylin would have been over 160 years old. The name sparked interest from those who had followed Merrylins work, most assuming him long dead. But the man claiming to be Thomas promptly disappeared. Leaving no evidence of his existence. The Merrylin estate was also sold off and money given to charity.
What he left was the most incredible collection ever known, actual specimens of dragons, the infant forms of werewolves, artifacts from ancient Vampyr nations and the trappings of nefarious scientists whose existence was presumed to be mere fiction. It was this, and the apparent immortality of Merrylin that drove me to become rather fanatical about understanding the life of this man, and his world changing collection. What had allowed him to live so long? Where had these specimens originated from, considering there are no other examples of these species to be found on the Earth? It is this that I find so thrilling and yet so terrifying..
