Food Needs Escalate While Crop Yields Max Out
Subscribe for more. Food Needs Escalate While Crop Yields Max Out A recent report says that many of the world's farms have hit their maximum yields for several staple crops. A recent report says that many of the world's farms have hit their maximum yields for several staple crops. Thus, keeping up with the food demands of a growing population will be difficult, if not impossible unless big-impact efforts are undertaken. While projections show that agricultural output will continue to increase, they are based on historical data rather than existing conditions. In reality, about a third of the growing areas for corn, wheat, and rice will be unable to produce greater quantities, and in some cases harvest quantities are expected to decline. Much of the reason is that advances in farming techniques, fertilizers and crop strains, can only yield so much. A lack of viable land is also restricting possible farming regions from being developed. There are precious few geographical areas that offer adequate water, temperatures, and sunlight, and those that haven't already been capitalized upon come with serious concerns attached. Untapped environments in which crops could flourish include wetlands, grasslands, and rainforests, but clearing them for agricultural use emits large quantities of greenhouse gasses. Several African locales could also handle the agricultural expansion, however massive improvements in fertilizer access and area infrastructures, as well as government stability would have to occur before they could contribute to the world's growing needs.- published: 20 Dec 2013

Corn Stress and Crop Yield Variation
This field in southwest Minnesota is a good example of variation in the corn crop. CAPS Executive Manager Tim Harris explains the signs of plant stress in terms of color, plant size, and leaf feel and temperature, as well as the impact on yield. He shows the variation in a single field, and how plant condition, in this case, is related to soil type. GREENHAVEN'S PRINGLE SAYS GROWING DEMAND AND THE PROMISE OF A CROP YIELD MAKE GLOBAL FARMLAND ATTRACTIVE ANCHOR QUESTION OFF-CAMERA (ENGLISH) SAYING: So you say there are secular issues with grain prices right now. Now we're looking at corn just hitting a three-year low, beans down at a 19-month low. What does that secular issue mean? GREENHAVEN COMMODITY CEO ASHMEAD PRINGLE (ENGLISH) SAYING: Well I think it means we're just retreating from the drought-driven highs when we had the short crops last year. So we're coming back to prices that are more in line with the prior years but we're still quite elevated from, say, the 2005 and 2006 level. GreenHaven, we sort of have our own little index for the grains which is one bushel of corn, one of wheat and one of soybeans and since the price advance have ranged from say, $18 to $32. And right now, I think that basket in the front is about $24. So we think there's not much more downside there. Corn could come a little bit lower as we have to harvest but we think that pretty much the discounting has taken place. ANCHOR QUESTION OFF-CAMERA (ENGLISH) SAYING: So how does this affect an equal-weighted fund in terms of your own performance? You can't really make shifts, or can you? GREENHAVEN COMMODITY CEO ASHMEAD PRINGLE (ENGLISH) SAYING: Well we don't make shifts in the allocations. As you know, we track your Thomson Reuters Continuous Commodity Index of 17 commodities equally weighted. And because the index is rebalanced everyday, we rebalance the fund every day. So if a commodity is, let's say, strong, we'll be selling to bring it back to 1.17. If corn is weak on a given day relative to the others, we would buy a little corn. So we're - everyday really like the name, the Continuous Index, we're trimming it up to be equal weight every day.- published: 07 Nov 2013

Deciphering Digital Traits Towards Predicting Crop Yield Shital Dixit
Deciphering Digital Traits Towards Predicting Crop Yield Shital Dixit
Accurate phenotyping is difficult to measure due to high subjectivity. This is often the bottleneck for translation of genetic research findings into breeding practices where selection of traits like yield is based on phenotypes of the crops. To solve this problem we have developed at PhenoFab®, novel tools and methods to phenotype plants objectively, accurately and non- destructively using high throughput (HTP) platforms, under various growing conditions. Relevant traits like yield, biomass, root growth, water use efficiency, nitrogen use efficiency etc. are captured for different crops using proprietary image analysis algorithms and analyzed using statistical growth models. These phenotypic traits can then be linked with the underlying genes using forward genetic methods and tools. Furthermore, these early digital traits can be correlated with traits that appear much late in a crops life that could be related to yield directly or indirectly. Besides, early and accurate selection of traits in crops PhenoFab has successfully dissected the role of seed treatment(s) and its complex combinatorial effects on the performance of the genotype under various environmental conditions. This is a very unique application which is now available at PhenoFab for the companies involved in seed treatments. Talking Book Demonstration
The Talking Book is a simple, durable and portable audio computer.
With this device, users play and record dozens of hours of messages, copy recordings between devices, and use interactive audio applications such as multiple-choice quizzes and audio hyperlinks. In remote regions, the Talking Book is creating change in the following ways:
In schools, students read along with audio books, engage in practice tests, and listen to embedded vocabulary definitions -- enhancing their literacy skills, reading confidence, and interest in school.
In villages, users listen to agriculture and health guidance created by local experts and record their own messages to document personal expertise. Because users can copy recordings between devices, they are able to share knowledge with peers. By applying the newly acquired knowledge, users improve their lives—achieving greater crop yields and improving the health of their families.

Effect of Shatasloki Ramayana Watching/Listening on Ozone layer depletion
I would like to share my preliminary research results in this forum about watching Shatashloki Ramayana (SSR) video by several thousands of devotees on World Wide Web space and its effect on the Ozone hole filling. Because Sri Swamiji recently provided a hint in his discourse about this phenomenon during the Datta Jayanti celebrations, I conducted research on the information based on the published facts by NASA, USA. As we all know, the Ozone layer protects life on Earth from the Sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. For people, overexposure to UV rays can lead to skin cancer, cataracts, and weakened immune systems. Increased UV can also lead to reduced crop yield and disruptions in the marine creatures. The “hole” is designated as the area where the total ozone concentration is below 220 Dobson Units (DU, a measure of thickness). The largest Ozone hole was recorded in 2006 (27 million Km square area & less than 100 DU ozone thickness) but during this year (2011) there were two Ozone holes recorded with more magnitude and size than the average for the last decade. Even the edge of the ozone hole passed over the tip of South America around Sep, Oct, and Nov months. Although the process of forming an Ozone hole and its shrinkage is a part of the natural phenomena every year, this year it was more intense and filling these holes (by increasing the Ozone content) was also completed by early Dec 2011. Furthermore, these holes were shrunk to zero size and Ozone levels had gone up to 250 DU (higher than critical levels) by Dec 25, 2011.
All the above facts strongly correlate with the dates of Shatashloki Ramayana video launch (on Youtube/Vimeo) and reaching several million views over the past 4 months by all of us. It also reminds me why Sri Swamiji has been continuously driving us to watch/listen to SSR from World Wide Web source.
I would highly recommend you to watch/listen to this video continuously, because it is a great resolve taken by Sri Swamiji to make each one of us be part of this great ritual of establishing peace in the world as portrayed in the Shanti Mantra (Prayer for Peace) in our Vedas:
Aum Dyauh Saantir Antareeksham Saantih !
Prithvi Saantir Aapah Saantihr Osadhayah Saantih !
Vanaspatayah Saantir Visvedevaah Saantih Brahma Saantih !
Sarvam Saantih Saantih Reva Saantihi !
Meaning: May there be peace in heaven. MAY THERE BE PEACE IN THE SKY. May there be peace on earth. May there be peace in the water. May there be peace in the plants. May there be peace in the trees. May there be peace in the Gods. May there be peace in Brahman. May there be peace in all. May that peace, real peace, be mine.
A report of a more detailed analysis will be published in this forum soon.
Disclaimer:- There were some other contributing factors (elimination of hazardous chemicals) which also helped in reducing the depletion of Ozone layer. We are collecting more data to correlate statistically before making firm conclusions on this research.
Thank you for giving your time for watching this video.

Elias Foundation Trust: Located in rural Chiredzi, EFT operates a food and medical outreach, tertiary scholarships for community youth, and a micro-agricultural program which increases localized crop yielding by 300%.
EFT was originally established to provide educational scholarships for the children of a local gardener, Elias Sithole. When Eric and Scott of the Elias Fund went to Zimbabwe in 2005 the seeds were sown for the creation of a full-fledge foundation. The Ballance and Davy families have been an integral part of the Foundation since it’s inception, with Mr. Alex Ndoda a welcome addition bringing a wealth of wisdom in dealing with human and cultural issues. The Foundation operates a food and medical outreach for the blind community, tertiary scholarships for community youth, and a micro-agricultural program that increases localized crop yielding by 300%.
The hard-working members of EFT are at the forefront of crisis relief for Zimbabwe’s forgotten rural population, and as life-long community members of Chiredzi, their efforts reflect the creative possibilities inherently present to indigenous responses to poverty.
