James Donald "Jim" Root (born October 2, 1971), also known by his number #4, is an American musician known for being the rhythm guitarist for the heavy metal band Slipknot, and the former lead guitarist for alternative metal band Stone Sour.
Root began performing with the thrash metal band Atomic Opera from Iowa in the early 90s, not to be confused with the hard rock band Atomic Opera from Houston, Texas. Soon after they split up he went on to perform in bands such as DeadFront and Stone Sour; the latter which he joined in 1995, and returned to along with vocalist Corey Taylor, during its revival in 2002. Prior to joining Slipknot, he worked as a screenprinter, waiter, and busboy.
He joined Slipknot in January 1999, replacing their original guitarist, Josh Brainard, who left the band during the recording of their self-titled album, reportedly after having fulfilled his recording duties. In fact, the only two songs Root recorded during the album's sessions were "Purity" and "Me Inside", the former being featured on the short-lived first pressing of Slipknot as well as the 10th Anniversary Edition, and the latter being its replacement. Despite this, the song has become a staple for most of the band's live performances. Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor invited Root to join the band based on Taylor's past experiences working with him in Stone Sour.

Jim Root, one of the two guitarists for Slipknot, speaks to The You Rock Foundation about how he has struggled as an outsider with turbulent thoughts throughout life and how he has used his artistic career path to distract him from them. As someone who is most comfortable playing behind a mask on the stage, music gets him out of his head and gives him strength to continue. Article and photos: http://bit.ly/SlipknotRR In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Mother’s Day 2015, Slipknot guitarists Mick Thomson and Jim Root took some time before their somewhat hometown show and hung with PG to talk about signature guitars, tube heads, and the handful off effects they need to punish arenas each night. Mick Thomson’s Gear GUITARS Mick Thomson is a creature of habit—give him a few of his Ibanez MTM signature guitars packed with his Seymour Duncan EMTY Blackout pickups and he’s a happy dude. Each one of his guitars features a mahogany body, maple neck, and rosewood fretboard. As far as he’s concerned, the best guitar he has out on the road right now is his white-and-black “storm trooper” Ibanez MTM that’s kept tuned to dropped-B. According to Thomson, it’s perfect for rhythm...

Here is an Inside and Out Review of the Orange Terror Jim Root #4. Now this amp has no frills (except for a loop with no volume control) and is strictly one channel. This amp is going to battle against the Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister 36 (video recently posted on tonymckenziecom YouTube). Does this amp stand ANY chance of competing? Find out what this amp is all about in this review with the Amp played at the end of the video. I'll be making a Head to Head shootout after this video so that's going to be fun too - but you might be surprised at the result! From my Gibson straight into the Amp head, no pedals in front. In the FX Loop you see the TC Electronic Alter Ego Vintage Echo and the Strymon Big Sky. So , I've had this amp for the better part of this year but never got around to publishing a video for it. With all the excitement surrounding the Micro Dark, i thought now would be a good time to show you what the Jim Root #4 Terror head is capable of. This amp and the Peave 6505 MH are tmy favorite metal amps right now and both are super dynamic with many tones to offer from the soft medium hard and then the insane hard. Its really hard to beat both this of these amps right now. And when you consider the price of each of them, nothing really compares. if only marshall would make $700.00 JVM type of head 10-20 watt head....

Returning to Australia once again to headline the bill for Soundwave, masters of mayhem Slipknot arose from their black abyss to speak to Music Feeds about the 2015 event, their new album .5: The Gray Chapter and their long-lasting bond with Australians. Vocalist Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root, dressed to the nine’s in their trademark boiler suits and goddamn freaky masks, attempted to solve their bond with their fan base Down Under. “Every since we started coming down here in 2000, we’ve just had a really special relationship with the fans,” said Taylor. He added: “We set a crazy foundation for when we came back down and it’s been reciprocated every time we come down.” Speaking of the fan response to the latest full-length offering from the band, Corey says fans were expecting an ...

I'm not too comfortable to fall from the start
Well, I don't find success interesting as art
But I'll build a home
In these broken songs
Like you said I should
Like you understood
I'm not too comfortable to fall from the start
When it gets too intimate, then I fall apart
And I carry on
Singing broken songs
Like you said I should
Like you understood
But I'll build a home
In these broken songs
Like you said I should
Like you understood
