Ukraine: Klitschko in scuffle with police in Independence square
Ukrainian opposition leader Vitali Klitschko was among the protesters gathered in Independence Square in the early hours of Wednesday, as police stormed the premisses and took down the barricades and camps built by the anti-government demonstrators. Klitschko was forced back by riot police in a minor scuffle, as the former boxing world champ spoke to his supporters in the square. In Independence Square police remain out in force, but are not trying to disperse the demonstrators. However, its reported barricades in other parts of the city are being pulled down by riot police. Mustafa Nayem, one of the protest organisers, claims the authorities are reluctant to act with the eyes of the EU on them. "What is really a problem for them is the presence of foreign politicians and foreign diplomats. If you would speak to anyone from the authorities they would tell you 'ok maybe we'll do something, we'll use some police force but not now'." This is now the third week of the protests, which started when Ukraine's President Viktor Yanukovych ditched a trade deal with Europe in favour of more cooperation with Russia. Ukraine's "warzone" around Independence Square - Truthloader
The streets of Kiev resembled a warzone overnight, with fires burning, Molotov cocktails and fireworks being detonated and violence between police and protesters. It was the fifth consecutive day of unrest in Ukraine's Euromaidan protests, which began last November but it was also the day in which the first three fatalities were recorded. Massive Anti-Government Protest in Independence Square, Kiev
As protesters mass in Independence Square, Ukrainian opposition leaders demand President Yanukovich refuse to sign any agreements with Russia. Full Story: Tens of thousands of anti-government protesters gather at Kiev's Independence Square. Opposition leaders are demanding President Viktor Yanukovich not sign any documents with Russia during his upcoming visit to Moscow, fearing it will slam the door on the country's chances to integrate with mainstream Europe. Opposition leader Oleh Tyahnibok: [Oleh Tyahnibok, Opposition Leader]: "And we, the modern Ukrainians, must do everything we can right now for the sake of the future, so that Moscow does not step its dirty boots over Ukrainians, that is why we forbid the president to sign anything in Moscow, that would conflict with the interests of the nation." This comes after weeks of protests against the government's policy swerve -- turning away from the EU and toward Moscow for aid to save Ukraine's distressed economy. U.S. Senators John McCain and Christopher Murphy, traveled to Kiev to demonstrate their solidarity with the opposition. [John McCain, U.S. Senator]: "And the destiny you seek lies in Europe. Ukraine will make Europe better, and Europe will make Ukraine better." Meanwhile, a couple thousand government supporters gathered nearby at European Square, with police presence dividing the two rallies. This pro-government demonstrator stressed the benefits of aligning with Russia: [Valentina, Pro Government Demonstrator]: "My opinion is it is better be part of Europe and live like Germany in harmony with Russia, they do after all have a lot in common such as the gas pipeline, car industry..." Some protesters characterize the East-West tug-of-war as a battle for Ukraine's soul. Protesters in Kiev Rebuild Barricades on Independence Square
Protesters in Kiev Rebuild Barricades on Independence Square
Protesters at Kiev's Independence Square defy authorities by building even bigger barricades on Thursday after police action early Wednesday morning. Full Story: Ukrainian anti-government protesters stood their ground on Thursday morning and rebuilt barricades after an attempt by police to clear the square the previous day. The authorities had made their most forceful attempt so far to reclaim the streets on Wednesday, sending in battalions of riot police with bulldozers to clear barricades blocking access to the square. There were scuffles and arrests but police did not enter the nearby City Hall and by morning they withdrew from the streets. By Thursday morning protesters were even more determined to stay in the square, and vowed to remain there until the government and the president resign. They have been protesting for more than two weeks since being angered by Yanukovich's decision to reject an EU trade pact in favor of closer ties with its former Soviet master, Russia. Speaking at Independence Square, Father Stefan said the protesters were not afraid because they came for democracy and believed in its importance. After talks with officials from the U.S. and EU, Yanukovich on Wednesday invited all parties to a roundtable for talks. But protest leaders say they will not hold talks with the president until their demands are met. Opposition leaders are calling for Yanukovich and his government to resign, for the release of what they say are political prisoners and for riot police suspected of violence to be punished. Ukraine: Protesters dig in as they hold Independence Square
Anti-government protesters remained gathered in Kiev's Independence Square on Wednesday morning, clearing snow from the ground and handing out warm food to others. Police forces have been clearing areas of demonstrators over night, including a push to remove camps, barricades and crowds from Independence Square. They have pulled back following a clash with protesters, but maintain a large presence on the streets of Ukraine's capital. Ukraine: Protesters set up barricades around Independence Square
Riot police formed a cordon on the streets of Kiev on Sunday to stop protesters from further attempts towards the presidential administration. Earlier, the police drove protesters away with force, after protesters used a bulldozer and impromptu battering rams in an attempt to break police lines . Earlier on Sunday, Kiev's city council was stormed as thousands of pro-EU supporters arrived at Independence Square, despite a ban on protesting there. At the same time, thousands poured into Mikhailovskaya Square for the start of a rally through the streets of the Ukrainian capital. Numerous demonstrations have been held over the past week in protest at the Ukrainian government's decision not to sign an association agreement with the European Union.
