A GERMAN OUTLINE MODEL RAILWAY
That lives on only in the memory and photographs! i had to dismantle all this layout when we moved house and initially it looked as if there would be no room for a layout at all in the new one.Eventually i did get to build another layout at our new house which you can see if you would like to by entering Valendorf in the serch box. The backing music is from the Chantays and is called Pipeline.( I have purchased the record so am only spreading it around for more to enjoy and possibly purchase, for no personal financial profit. i add this as youtube have marked the video as containing third party content.)- published: 18 Oct 2010

Germany's Defence Minister arrives in Afghanistan
Germany's newly-appointed Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen has made a surprise visit to allied troops in Afghanistan. She arrived on Sunday morning at Camp Marmal in the north. More than 3,800 German soldiers are deployed in Afghanistan as part of NATO's international security force. Von der Leyen is the first woman ever to hold the post of German Defence Minister. The visit comes as negotiations are underway about a State of Forces Agreement (SOFA) to outline NATO's overall role in Afghanistan after the 2014 withdrawal. The agreement refers to NATO's mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan army and police.- published: 23 Dec 2013

Shadowplay (Panasonic GH1 & Carl Zeiss 85mm F1.4 lens)
Panasonic GH1 test shoot in the city centre of Manchester.
I used a Carl Zeiss Planar 85mm F1.4, the famed portrait lens made in West Germany, for the brighter, sharper shots. You can tell the difference over the Canon FD 50mm F1.4 and F1.8 lenses which were used for around 50% of the shots although these are very good lenses for £40!
Music is Joy Division: Shadowplay.
At 99% of times I had the lenses stopped down slightly for a sharper image. The Zeiss was therefore at around F1.8 and the Canon's around F2.
You can see the outline of the Zeiss's iris in some of the bokeh shots. It's a beautiful lens - had for £170 on eBay.
The GH1 was able to shoot most of this at ISO 1600 with a minimum of noise: incredible little camera, and while not quite as good in very low illumination scenes as the Canon 5D Mark II it does have much better usability and I hope this quickly shot video goes someway to proving that the GH1 can compete on level terms with the 5D Mark II in low light, with the right lenses.
Shot in 720p with a 1/25 shutter speed (available with latest firmware).
720p, even on a 50 inch plasma TV looks as sharp as tack, highly detailed and fluid. Vimeo's compression introduced a bit more noise than you'd see on a TV or projector from the raw footage.
Interesting side note: whilst composing a shot the managing director of Panasonic Stores, Devon walked up for a chat and gave me his business card :)
Anyway - hope you like it!

Dark Matter Noise (Stop-Motion w/the Canon 5D)
Screened at the Gasteig Cultural Museum in Munich Germany [May 23rd 2009] as part of the Lange Nacht der Musik Festival: http://www.gasteig.de
This is a movie I made for my friend Allen Tompkins of the music project Dark Matter Noise. This is actually an excerpt from a longer piece titled 'DMN'. I also used a very short snippet from another Dark Matter Noise song called 'Pulse'. You can check out both songs in their entirety on the Dark Matter Noise myspace profile: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID;=155011574.
I really appreciate the emails and comments I've received these last few months. I've gotten a lot of questions on whether there are any tutorials or books I can recommend for stop-motion or time-lapse photography. I pretty much developed my workflow through trial and error, but recently I came across a great video tutorial from 'This Week In Photography' which has really helped me out (http://www.vimeo.com/3340273).
I'm not sure if this is the best way to go about doing a stop-motion or time-lapse project, but for what it's worth, here's what I did for this one...
WORKFLOW:
1) All photos were taken with the Canon 5d Mark 1 using a 50mm 1.4 lens and the 24-105mm f4 L Kit Lens.
2) Photos were imported into Lightroom 2 for color effects and correction. I cropped all the photos to an HD 16x9 ratio. I also drew titles and animations on some of the frames using the adjustment brush.
3) I then created a 'Source Photos' folder to export my photos into.
4) When exporting out of Lightroom 2 in the export menu under image sizing, I checked the box for 'Resize To Fit' and chose 'Short Edge' from the contextual menu. Next to 'Pixels' I changed the number to 1080 (for HD) and kept the resolution at 300 'pixels per inch'.
5) After exporting my pictures to my 'Source Photos' folder, I opened Quicktime Pro. From the 'File' menu, I chose 'Open Image Sequence' and then clicked on the first photo in my 'Source Photos' folder (Quicktime Pro wont let you choose all the photos in the folder- just click on the first photo, and Quicktime Pro will know to combine the rest sequentially... it will also ask you how many frames per second you want your movie to be). This was a huge time saver for me compared to the workflow I outlined under the 'Campfire' video (http://www.vimeo.com/2304783).
6) A movie of all my images appeared in the Quicktime Player and I saved this movie to a new folder called 'Source Clips'.
7) I then repeated this process until I had all my finished image sequences for my movie in my 'Source Clips' folder.
8) I opened Final Cut and imported all my image sequences from my 'Source Clips' folder... and that's it! The rest is editing.
I hope that helps!
Once again, most of this workflow is also outlined in the video tutorial that I linked to above.

The Black Box Project - "Still Life in a Circle"
Think inside the box. Normally designers are called upon to think outside the box. Swedish paperboard manufacturer Iggesund and advertising agency Schindler Parent from Germany asked several leading designers to summon all their creative inspiration to do the opposite - And think inside the box!
German Illustrator, Designer and Art Director Sebastian Onufszak created a shortfilm about love and hate, about life and death and about lightness and darkness.
The outcome was "Still Life in a Circle", an abstract, mainly 3D-generated movie which by using video in print is waiting for you on an integrated screen in the box and starts playing right after you opened it.
We´ve been guest to Sebastian Onufszak and filmed a making of with all participants to give an outline of the project. This was inlcuded in the Blackbox as a DVD and was used for the campaign and diverse social media.

Short Synopsis
‘After’ is a documentary animation that traces the emotional journey of three people as they journey from isolation and despair to discover a newfound hope in their lives.
Long Synopsis
‘After’ is a documentary animation that uses the voices of three people, intertwined into one emotional journey. They begin the film feeling isolated and alone. The clay animation shows a lonely vulnerable figure, who does not know how to cope with life.
Slowly their depression deepens and turns into something more visceral. They totally reject their bodies, and move into their heads. The voices overlap and grow panicked and incomprehensible, while the clay becomes increasingly messy. Desperate, the voices try to find a way out of the world, out of the chaos in their heads, out of life itself. The clay turns into a bottle of pills being swallowed.
And suddenly the chaos and panic turns into blackness. Slowly, out of the void we begin to hear slight sounds. We hears the words ‘You either kill yourself…or you don’t.’
Slowly, very slowly, the blackness disappears, and we see flecks of gold flit across the screen. The voices talk about beginning to find hope, as the animation turns into paint on glass: red and gold images becoming more fluid and more peaceful.
Finally, the voices talk about coming out of that very dark place and approaching life from a new, fresh perspective. They learn to accept who they are and stop looking for the dark in everything. The paint on glass turns into a warm, vibrant gold clay sculpture. We see fragments of a gold person as it slowly comes together to become a whole human being. The music swells as the voices become increasingly optimistic, talking about finally having hope and finding enjoyment in life. The final image is of a gold face staring into the camera.
Production Notes
Kim, the animation director, had thought about doing a documentary animation for some time. She was interested in exploring the experiences of people who had been suicidal but got over it. When she teamed up with Annalise, her producer, she had an idea of the sort of people she wanted to interview in order to get this emotional journey.
Our first step was to find the right people to be interviewed. This proved very difficult and took some months. We advertised on websites, through counselling centres and word of mouth, none of which gave a response. Eventually the most successful route was when we asked the local newspaper to do an article on the film, asking people in the area if they would like to be interviewed. This got a good response and in the end Kim was able to interview four people.
These interviews gave us hours of sound footage. We went through each of the interviews and tried to come up with similarities and consistencies between the emotional journeys. The key to this film was in finding the universal journey that they had all experienced - this film was always about one emotional journey, not three separate ones.
Slowly, as we became more familiar with the material, we started to find a structure and similarity within the interviews. They could be divided into four ‘sections’ – initial feelings of isolation, leading to desperation and suicide. Then there was a ‘bridge’ between the suicidal thoughts and the beginning of recovery, finally leading to a new, hopeful ending. Not perfection, not total happiness, but an understanding and acceptance of who they were. We wrote out a two-page outline, which used sentences from the interviews to tell the emotional journey of the film.
Once we had these four sections, we asked each member of the production team to come up with some kind of material for
