Owners of Portugal is a documentary about one hundred years of economic power.
The film portrays the State protection to families that dominated the country's economy, their strategies for power and wealth accumulation.
Mello, Champalimaud, Espírito Santo - big families intersect by marriage and integrate by finance. Threatened by the end of the dictatorship, their power is restored under democracy, through privatization and promiscuity with politics. New economic groups - Amorim, Sonae, Jerónimo Martins - grow on the same basis.
As the crisis unravels the limits of Portuguese economic development model, this film presents the actors and the main choices that brought us here.

Owners of Portugal was directed by Jorge Costa, edited by Edgar Feldman and produced for Portuguese public television RTP2 by the Institute of Contemporary History (www.ihc.fcsh.unl.pt).
It was broadcasted on the 25th of Abril, 2012. Since that day it is available online. In the first two weeks, the film had more than 120.000 views (on Vimeo and individual publications on Youtube).
Owners of Portugal is based in the book of the same name, by Jorge Costa, Cecília Honório, Luís Fazenda, Francisco Louçã and Fernando Rosas, printed in 2010 by Edições Afrontamento. It sold more than 12.000 copies.

PRECARIEDADE (PRECARITY) is an experimental documentary that narrates a tale of globalization with Portugal as the protagonist. The film examines cycles of boom and bust as told by Portugal as one of the first colonial empires, and recent European countries to collapse under “Austerity” measures resulting from the European Financial Crisis. The context of Austerity marks a “precarious” tipping point for the future of the European Union, as tensions over the debt crisis threaten to dismantle unification, the Euro, and the democratic sovereignty of these nations. Austerity also marks a global tipping point, as debt policies imposed by the IMF for decades in South America and Africa are now being tested in Western Europe. As countries like Portugal privatize and sell off their infrastructure to pay for the debt, we find a surprising process of reversed colonization where the emerging economies of former colonies, such as Angola, have now purchased this infrastructure, introducing reversed and neo-colonial geographies between North and South. While exploring the implications of this socio-political context in Portugal, this film also tells the tale of the rebirth of grassroots activist movements (m12m, precarious workers movement, and others) in Portugal, the seeds of which later spread to Spain, and North America, sparking the “Indignation” and the “Occupy” movements.
In 2012, additional interviews were conducted with activists, journalists, former Parliament members, and artists to discuss the impact of the "Troika" on Portuguese society. Interviewees include: Pedro Rosa Mendes, Raquel Freire, Paula Gil, Raquel Ribeiro, José Soeiro, Ricardo Moreira, Johan Diels, Sara Moreira, and Miguel Januário. Many interviewees have called this "dismantling of democracy" brought on by austerity measures the "counter-revolution."
Original film footage was shot on location in 2011-2012 by Megan Michalak in Cacilhas, Axeimosa, Sequeros, Nodar, Lisboa, and Porto in Portugal. This film contains no found footage.

A internacionalmente conhecida Praia dos Supertubos, em Peniche, Capital da Onda, será palco de um evento único no panorama do Bodyboard em Portugal, o 2º Refresh Drop Knee Challenge.
Esta prova apenas contará com os vinte e quatro melhores atletas portugueses de Drop Knee, modalidade de Bodyboard, que serão convidados pela organização, sendo realizada num único dia.
O período definido para o evento, será os fins-de-semana de 01-02 e 07-08 de Dezembro do corrente ano, sendo que a organização emitirá um aviso com 48h de antecedência a informar o dia exacto da competição.
O 2º Refresh Drop Knee Challenge tem o alto patrocínio da Refresh Bodyboards e da Monster Energy, com o apoio do Peniche Surf Clube, Município de Peniche, Bombeiros Voluntários de Peniche, Baia de Peniche Surf School, Associação bodyboard Foz Mondego, Chantilly Media, Vert Magazine, e está integrado na iniciativa “Novembro Mês do Mar 2012”.

SUPERTUBOS receives the 2nd Drop Knee Refresh Challenge
The internationally known beach of Supertubos in Peniche, Capital Wave in Portugal, will host a unique event in the panorama of Bodyboarding in Portugal, the 2nd Drop Knee Refresh Challenge.
This race will feature only the twenty-four top Portuguese athletes in Drop Knee, modality Bodyboard, who will be invited by the organization, being held in a single day.
The period defined for the event, will be the week-end of 01-02 and 07-08 December this year, and the organization will issue a notice 48 hours in advance to inform the exact day of the competition.
The 2nd Refresh Drop Knee Challenge has the sponsorship of Refresh Bodyboards and Monster Energy, with support from Peniche Surf Club, Municipality of Peniche, Volunteer Firefighters of Peniche, Baia de Peniche Surf School, Association Bodyboard Foz Mondego, Chantilly Media, Vert Magazine, and is integrated into the initiative “ November Month of the Sea 2012."
The Refresh boards is the only Portuguese factory bodyboards, with a personalized service that offers all sorts of after-sales guarantees, with custom made concept, where the athlete can choose the board that best fits their characteristics, experience and type of waves.

VAT is also being be hiked to 23 percent for businesses in the food and drink sector. Bruno Dias of the Portuguese Communist Party warned that the costs of the measure would be huge, describing "a desperate economic and social situation for thousands of small and micro businesses" who had been "condemned once again in the budget."
