Why The European Union Will Fail: Q&A; with Austrian Economist Barbara Kolm
"The European Union as we know it will not exist in 10 years, believe me," says Barbara Kolm, president of the Austrian Economics Center in Vienna, Austria. While countries like Sweden have instituted successful reforms, according the Kolm, the high taxation, powerful unions, and bloated bureaucracies in most European countries will lead to the collapse of the EU's economy. Kolm's advice to policy makers in the US? "Don't become Europe." Kolm stopped by Reason's LA studio to talk about the economic situation in Europe, the fate of the Euro, and why America should not look to the Old World for financial advice. Approximately 6 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine and Alex Manning. Chile to Kili: Driving change from the seat of a bicycle
The goal: Ride from Chile to Kilimanjaro
Elvis Munis, 25, of Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, is bicycling around the world to raise awareness about environmental issues and funds for scholarships to support students in Africa to study resource management in college.
The distance of this trip is about 80 000kms or 50 000m and will traverse some 41 countries completely unsupported.
Elvis’s journey started in Santiago, Chile and takes him through Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Mexico, USA, Canada, Alaska, across the Bearing Sea (by any means) into Russia, Mongolia, China, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, across the Caspian Sea into Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Austria, Germany, France, Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and ending at the foot of Kilimanjaro, Tanzania—Elvis's home.
Elvis, and any riders who dare to join him, must locate and carry their own food, shelter, and resources throughout the trip. Most nights will be spent camping in tents or staying with local contacts.
If you’re on his route and can offer a place to stay or a hot meal, drop us a line or if you want to have a semi-real-time chat with Elvis, or just tell him "good luck", post a little something here.
Inspiration:
This ride was inspired by the Gandhi’s famous quotation- “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
This has been a long-time favorite quote of both event organizers and triggered a conversation on the shores of Zanzibar that lead to the creation of this life-altering event.
Change must come from the inside. Elvis, a 25 year old Tanzanian naturalist and student, identifies one of the major problems in his country as the lack of opportunity for Tanzanians to obtain the education necessary to manage their own natural resources. Tanzania’s economy is dependent on conservation-based tourism, yet management decisions and safari companies tend to be run by foreigners. This ride will raise awareness about the lack of educational opportunities and therefor lack of upward mobility afforded to Tanzanian citizens.
By volunteering to bike around the world in an effort to raise money for a scholarship program for conservation students like himself, Elvis truly is “being” the change he wants to see.

Architecture and Happiness
Anna Heringer is an architectural designer from Salzburg, Austria. Her work focuses on the use of local materials, skills and energy sources to create buildings that are distinct and undeniably from their place. In 1998, Heringer lived in the village of Rudrapur, Bangladesh, as a volunteer for Dipshikha, a local non-governmental organization. In that same town in 2005-2006, her diploma project, a school built from mud and bamboo, came to fruition. Following this success, in 2007-2008 she coordinated students from Bangladesh and Austria to build a vocational school and a pilot project on rural housing in Rudrapur. Her experience in Bangladesh taught her at a grassroots level that architecture is a tool to improve lives. The main aim of her projects is to build the confidence of people—the craftsmen, the local community, the youth—and to nurture trust in their endogenous potentials. Her projects aim to strengthen cultural identity, support local economies and foster ecological balance through architecture. From October 2008 to May 2011 Heringer led the studio BASEhabitat—architecture for development at the University of Arts in Linz, Austria. She lectured worldwide and conducted international workshops in Bangladesh and Austria. As a new Loeb Fellow at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, she will study construction methods based on natural materials and human labor focusing on their impact on society, environment and building culture.

In the past five years, the globalised trend of interior design has seemingly been led by the five cities-renowned as the cities of design, including Tokyo, Paris, Milan, London and New York. At the same time, it has become a common realization of designers around the world to explore and employ the local features for each project with the advancement of economy and culture.
The book, Atlas of world Interiors, with 500 projects selected, is a detailed and comprehensive portrayal of the best and newest interior projects from 6 continents of more than 50 countries. In detail, the projects are of different styles, such as the pragmatism of North America, the naturalism of South America, the regionalism of Asia, the minimalism of North Europe and the luxurism of the Mediterranean area. In countries such as, Iran, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia and so on, the history and culture of a particular location was subtly integrated into the interior design through innovative approaches. Moreover, designers can also be inspired a lot by this book to search a balance between the overwhelmingly globalized trend and the increasingly personalized feature.
This book offers readers a visual feast with the collection of world's most classic interior projects and is categorized into 10 parts, including culture and leisure, restaurant, bar, shop and showroom, spa and fitness, hospital and pharmacy, office, teaching and research, house, hotel, transport and factory. Each project is illustrated with real photos, plans and text. In addition, each geographic region is distinguished by a different color-code. We firmly believe and hope it will serve as a source of pleasure and inspiration to all its readers.
As one of the series books Atlas of world Interiors, this book is featured with its timeliness, globalization, regionalization, and professionalization to help readers from all over the world to find inspiration, and approach new materials and the cultural heritage.

WE NEED YOU NOW (MORE THAN EVER)
We Need You Now (More Than Ever) is a charity music video for the European economy.
Performers: Carsten Höller, Gregor Wroblewski, Katerina Gregos, Lillibeth Cuenca Rasmussen, Mark Sladen, Mikhail Karikis, Pilvi Takala, Ursula Mayer, Wim Delvoye & Wooloo.
Informed by the ideology and aesthetics of pop initiatives such as We Are The World (1985), this video is asking the Catholic Church to bail Europe out of its economic crisis. The work takes as its starting point the fact that the Catholic Church is the single largest financial power and property owner in existence – and pleads with the Church to use its significant wealth to pay off the European debt.
For the video’s production, instead of requesting the participation of traditional pop stars, Wooloo invited a number of European artists and curators to take part. With each rejection from an artist or curator, Wooloo initiated a new request, to another art world personality, until the closing lineup of the video was secured.
In September 2012, We Need You Now (More Than Ever) premiered at Newtopia in the city of Mechelen - the home of the Catholic Church in Belgium. (www.newtopia.be / curated by Katerina Gregos)
In 2013, We Need You Now (More Than Ever) is being presented at the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art, Sweden, as well as at Steirischer Herbst in Graz, Austria.
Wooloo is Sixten Kai Nielsen and Martin Rosengaard. Established in 2002 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

We Need You Now (More Than Ever) is realized with kind support from the Danish Arts Council.
WE NEED YOU NOW (MORE THAN EVER) LYRICS
[Verse1]
This is a time when we just have nothing left
When Europe must come together as one
No people buying and its time to ask for help
From the greatest power of them all
[Verse2]
We were there for you, when the world was still expanding
Together we collected golden shores
We’re all a part of Europe’s great big family
And billions is everything we need
[Chorus1]
You got a lot, more than enough
You are the richest in this world
So wont you listen
We need the Church to make a choice
Old Europe needs you now
We need you more than ever - bail us out
[Verse3]
Send us your funds and we’ll start anew again
With our pensions still so strong and free
As we wait in line for jobs that went away
We pray for you to listen and to pay
[Chorus2]
You got a lot, more than enough
You are the richest in this world
So wont you listen
We need the Church to make a choice
Old Europe needs you now
We need you more than ever - bail us out
[Middle]
Europe’s down and out, now the Church must give away
Cos remember we - might take it anyway
Let us realize – that this was all done before
When we stand together as one - together as one
[Chorus3]
You got a lot, more than enough
You are the richest in this world
So wont you listen
We need the Church to make a choice
Old Europe needs you now
We need you more than ever - bail us out
[Chorus4]
You got a lot, more than enough
You are the richest in this world
So wont you listen
We need the Church to make a choice
Old Europe needs you now
We need you more than ever - bail us out
We need you more than ever - bail us out
We need you more than ever - bail us out
