Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez gave himself up to authorities after speaking at a mass rally in Caracas, Tuesday. His wife Lilian Tintori was at his side throughout the event. Venezuelan Leopoldo Lopez Arrested Caracas Protestors Demand President Maduro Ousted. They have withstood gunfire, tear gas and water cannons. Yet after a number of deaths in their ranks, protesters in Venezuela once again took to the streets to demand better security, an end to scarcities and protected freedom of speech. The government reflects these complaints back on the opposition like a mirror. Shortages? Unrest? Violence? This is the doing of a corrupt opposition in cahoots with the United States, it says. Venezuela has withstood plots to destabilize its economy and overthrow the President, the government says. The confrontation took a dramatic turn Tuesday, when opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, accused by the government of conspiracy and murder, turned himself in to national guard troops. Hours later at a rally with throngs of supporters, President Nicolas Maduro said the head of Venezuela's National Assembly had helped negotiate Lopez's surrender and was taking him to a prison outside Caracas. Maduro described opposition leaders as right-wing fascists who plant seeds of fear and violence. He claimed they had repeatedly tried to assassinate him and overthrow his democratically elected government. And he compared the opposition to an illness plaguing the South American country. "The only way to fight fascism in a society is like when you have a very bad infection ... you need to take penicillin, or rather the strongest antibiotic, and undergo treatment," he said. "Fascism is an infection in Venezuela and in the world. And the only treatment that exists is justice."- published: 18 Feb 2014

Protesters and police were in a tense stand-off in Caracas on Tuesday following last week's violent demonstrations. A woman draped in a Venezuelan flag is seen speaking to the front line of the police cordon, as a crowd of hundreds stands behind her. Earlier Tuesday, opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez gave himself up to authorities after speaking at a mass rally in the capital. Venezuela Opposition Leader Surrenders to Police
(CNN) -- They've faced gunfire, tear gas and water cannons. And now a man who led them in days of anti-government demonstrations is behind bars after turning himself in to authorities. But Venezuelan protesters were still in the streets after opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez's arrest Tuesday, demanding better security, an end to scarcities and protected freedom of speech. President Nicolas Maduro and his supporters also rallied, blaming the opposition for causing the very problems it protests. Photos: Protests erupt in Venezuela Photos: Protests erupt in Venezuela Youth stage protests in Venezuela Clashes during days of demonstrations have already left three anti-government protesters and one government supporter dead. And the simmering tensions show no signs of letting up. The confrontation took a dramatic turn Tuesday, when Lopez, accused by the government of conspiracy and murder in connection with the recent violence, marched with a crowd of thousands of protesters before surrendering to national guard troops. "The options I had were leave the country, and I will never leave Venezuela!" Lopez told the massive crowd. "The other option was to remain in hiding, but that option could have left doubt among some, including some who are here, and we don't have anything to hide." Hours later at a rally with throngs of supporters, Maduro said the head of Venezuela's National Assembly had helped negotiate Lopez's surrender and was taking him to a prison outside Caracas. Maduro: Opposition leaders are 'fascists' Maduro described opposition leaders as right-wing fascists who plant seeds of fear and violence. He claimed they have U.S. backing and repeatedly tried to assassinate him and overthrow his democratically elected government. And the only treatment that exists is justice." Footage from Tuesday's demonstration shows Lopez being led by national guard troops to a military vehicle, waving to the crowd as he is placed inside and even continuing to speak on a megaphone until the door is closed. Charges against him include murder, terrorism and arson in connection with the protests, according to his party, Popular Will. Lopez denies the accusations, the party said in a statement calling for witnesses of the protests to send their own accounts of what happened to be used in his defense. A message on Lopez's Twitter account Tuesday night said he was on the way to a military prison, where party officials said he would be held at least until a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday. The post included a link to an apparently pre-recorded video message, showing the opposition leader seated on a couch next to his wife, calling on Venezuelans to keep pushing for change. "If you are watching this video, it is because the government has carried out one more abuse, full of lies, of falsehoods, of twisting facts and trying to manipulate the reality that we Venezuelans are living," he said. "I want to tell all Venezuelans that I do not regret what we have done up to this moment, in convoking the protests ... The people came out. The people woke up."- published: 19 Feb 2014

Venezuela opposition's Leopoldo Lopez hands himself in For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS A Venezuelan opposition leader, Leopoldo Lopez, has handed himself over to the National Guard after holding a speech to thousands of his supporters. He said he hoped his arrest would wake up the country to its "unjust justice". It comes as several thousand of pro- and anti-government supporters took part in tense rival rallies in the capital, Caracas. Mr Lopez was wanted on charges of inciting violence during recent street protests which left at least four dead. Speaking before thousands of his supporters wearing red, President Nicolas Maduro said Mr Lopez would be brought to Justice. 'Sedition' "He must answer before the prosecution, the courts, the laws his calls to sedition, his unawareness of the constitution," Mr Maduro told the crowd. Tensions have been running high in the deeply polarised country. Three of the dead - two anti-government protesters and one government supporter - died of bullet wounds sustained during demonstrations last Wednesday. Another student died after being ran over during a march on Monday night in the eastern city of Carupano. Before handing himself over to the authorities, Mr Lopez denied the charges against him. "I present myself to an unjust judiciary. They want to jail Venezuelans who want peaceful, democratic change," he said. Ahead of the rallies, Caracas Mayor Jorge Rodriguez warned that he had not authorised Tuesday's opposition march. Police and members of the National Guard were out in force. Opposition activists have accused the authorities of trying to prevent them from attending the anti-government rally. The anti-government demonstration was called by Mr Lopez, leader of the opposition Popular Will party and former mayor of Chacao district in eastern Caracas. Conspiracy allegations Earlier, he urged his supporters to join the march but asked them to stop short of the Interior Ministry, which is located in a pro-government area of Caracas and where he was planning to hand in a petition. "I will walk alone. I won't put any Venezuelan lives at risk. Go Venezuela!" he wrote on Twitter. The BBC's Irene Caselli in Caracas says thousands of people - many wearing white and holding Venezuelan flags - gathered in the east of the city in support of Mr Lopez. Government supporters wearing red held a rival march and headed to the presidential palace for the meeting with President Maduro. It appears Mr Lopez took the decision not to lead his supporters into the path of the pro-government protesters, our correspondent adds. A Venezuelan opposition leader, Leopoldo Lopez, has handed himself over to the National Guard after holding a speech to thousands of his supporters. In a video statement released on Sunday, Mr Lopez said he had not committed any crime and insisted allegations that he had incited violence were untrue. The US state department earlier denied claims that it was helping to organise the anti-government protests. "The allegation that the United States is helping to organise protesters in Venezuela is baseless and false," spokeswoman Jan Psaki said. Her statement came a day after Venezuela announced it would expel three US diplomats for allegedly meeting students who had been leading marches. The main opposition grievances are high inflation, crime and the shortage of some staples. The government has blamed the shortages on "saboteurs" and "profit-hungry corrupt businessmen".- published: 18 Feb 2014

Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez gives himself up
Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez handed himself over to Venezuelan security forces on Tuesday (February 18) as protests continued both for and against the government of President Nicolas Maduro. Lopez, a 42-year-old Harvard-educated economist who has spearheaded the protest movement, got into an armored vehicle after giving a speech to an opposition rally in Caracas. Lopez urged his supporters to remain firm in their protests. "That we don't leave the streets, that we take our right to protest, but do it in peace. Brothers, I ask that we, that everyone here and every Venezuelan who wants change, that we instruct ourselves, gather ourselves, organize ourselves and hold non-violent protests. The mass protest of volition, souls and hearts that want change, but without hurting others. I ask you not to lose faith," he told supporters with a megaphone, standing next to a statue of Cuban independence hero Jose Marti. Lopez, wanted on charges including murder and 'terrorism', says he is being made a scapegoat by a dictatorial government. "I swear to you we will overcome and very soon we will have a free and democratic Venezuela," Lopez said, minutes before he was escorted away by national guards. He was taken into an armoured vehicle as supporters flocked around it, chanting "Leopoldo amigo, el pueblo esta contigo - Leopoldo, our friend, the people is with you." Student-led protests have multiplied this month across Venezuela. The demonstrators are demanding Maduro's resignation and action on a host of social issues ranging from inflation and crime to corruption and product shortages. Many of the protesters wore white. Thousands of oil workers and Maduro supporters, clad in the red of the ruling Socialist Party, held their own demonstration on Tuesday. Maduro's government accuses opponents backed by Washington of seeking to promote a coup against him, similar to a botched attempt against Chavez in 2002 when he was ousted for 36 hours.- published: 19 Feb 2014

Does the Venezuela Uprising have traction? or Will Maduro shut it down?
Does the Venezuela Uprising have traction? or Will Maduro shut it down? They've faced gunfire, tear gas and water cannons. Clashes during days of demonstrations have already left three anti-government protesters and one government supporter dead. Maduro described opposition leaders as right-wing fascists who plant seeds of fear and violence. He claimed they have U.S. backing and repeatedly tried to assassinate him and overthrow his democratically elected government. The people woke up." Major social and economic problems in Venezuela have fueled the protests. But as the demonstrations gained steam, officials have pointed fingers at other factors, accusing the United States of plotting to destabilize the government. "Leopoldo lopez" "opposition leader" "anti-government"" Venezuelan protesters" "Nicolas maduro" clash violence caracas fascists "U.S. backing"assassinate overthrow terrorism murder social economic problems "financial crisis" "hugo Chavez expelled "popular will" "socialist revolution" gunfire protest police "breaking news" "news today" 2/18/2014 18/2/2014 "abc news" "cnn news" "fox news" "nbc news" "political news" "ap news" "bbc news" "barack obama" On Monday, Venezuela gave three U.S. diplomats 48 hours to leave the country, accusing them of conspiring to bring down the government. At Tuesday's rally, Maduro shouted, "Yankee, go home" from the stage, drawing cheers from the crowd. The opposition has been defeated over and over again at the polls, and despite this decision by the people, it continues to call for marches and protests, Julio Rafael Chavez, a ruling party lawmaker, told CNN en Español on Tuesday. "The peace-loving Venezuelans feel very, very worried by the irrational, fascist-leaning attitude and actions of a sector of the Venezuelan opposition," he said. This isn't the first time that bitter protests and counter-protests by supporters and opponents of the government have threatened political stability in Venezuela over the past decade. Many of Maduro's claims -- of U.S. intervention, of assassination plots -- were also lobbed by the late President Hugo Chavez.- published: 19 Feb 2014
