She was known as Maria the Mad.

Juana of Castile known as Juana la Loca or Joanna the Mad was haunted by mental health problems. She stabbed a romantic rival in the face and lived with her beloved husband’s corpse. Parallel Lives of Queens: Victoria of the United Kingdom and Maria II of Portugal
In the 19th century, two women became heads of state of two European kingdoms. Maria and Victoria were united by the unusual circumstances that led to their ascending to their respective thrones. Whereas Maria only became queen due to her father's abdication (for Pedro IV of Portugal preferred to be Emperor Pedro I of Brazil, and had only one male heir to succeed), Victoria became heir after the successive deaths of her first cousins, Princess Charlotte of Wales, and the two Princesses of Clarence.
This video is a short introduction to the way these two women were connected by their unique historical circumstances, and to the friendship that united them throughout their whole lives, which grew strengthened by their respective marriages: Maria, to Victoria's first cousin, Prince Ferdinand ...

Their friendship reflects the firmness of the Portuguese-English alliance, which dates back to the Middle Ages, and continues its relevance throughout the 19th and early 20th century.
Maria prematurely dies in 1853, while giving birth to her last child. Victoria will continue to reign for a good while longer, finally expiring in 1901, and giving her name to the Victorian era.
