The White Phoenix of Iga!
Iga Ueno Castle was initially built by Sadatsugu Tsutsui but was expanded and converted to its present form after Takatora Todo succeeded Sadatsugu in 1611. Uncanny in his military prowess and political sense, Takatora sided with Tokugawa Ieyasu at the decisive Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 after serving the Toyotomi Hideyoshi shogunate. Takatora was also renowned as one of the finest castle architects of his time. The castle is the centerpiece of Ueno City and is located in its main Park alongside the Ninja Yashiki and Basho Memorial Museums.
The castle tower was reconstructed as a five story wooden building in 1935 embodying the essence of the Momoyama style architecture of the late 16th century. With its elegant white walls, the castle is also known as the 'Hakuho' or 'white phoenix' castle for its resemblance to the fabled sacred white bird resting in green leaves. The walls surrounding the structure, at 30 meters tall, are said to be the highest in Japan. The castle was used as a shooting location for Kagemusha, a film directed by Kurosawa Akira in the early 1980's.
Constructed by Takatora Todo (1556-1630), a famous commander of the Warring States period, what now remains is the inner moat and stone walls of that time and the castle tower which was reconstructed in 1935. Composed of 3 floors, the inside of the castle has exhibits of the weapons and armor of Takatora Todo, the personal effects of the Todo clan, and 46 colored-paper ceiling pictures by famous artists such as Daikan Yokoyama. The inner moat and rock wall is famous in Japan for its height, and is well worth seeing.
The five story structure has an interior separated into three floors. Unlike many other castles in Japan, the main entry hall is very open and spacious with a fairly good collection of ancient artifacts such as armour, taiko drums, weapons, masks, scrolls, and palanquins.

Nagoya Castle HQ of the Owari Branch of the Tokugawa Shogunate
Nagoya Castle was constructed under the order of Tokugawa Ieyasu who founded the Tokugawa Shogunate after the battle of Sekigahara and resolved in 1609 to move from Kiyosu to build a castle in Nagoya in order to secure an important position on the Tokaido highway and to ward off attacks from the direction of Osaka. Construction of the donjons began in 1610 and ended in 1612. Nagoya Castle is an exemplary castle of those built on flat lands.
Kato Kiyomasa, Fukushima Masanori, and Maeda Toshimitsu were some of the 20 feudal lords from the northern and western part of Japan who were appointed to the construction. THe inscriptions of feudal lords and their vassals carved on the stones they carried are still visible today on the stone walls. Up until the Meiji Restoration, Nagoya Castle flourished as the castle where the Tokugawa lineage of Owari, the foremost of the three Tokugawa family lineages, resided.
At the beginning of the Meiji era the Army Ministry administered the castle, and the Nagoya Detached Garrison and barracks were disposed on the castle grounds. Transferred to the Imperial Household Ministry in 1893, the castle became the Nagoya Imperial Villa. IN 1930, after the abolition of the Imperial Villa, the castle was brought under the administration of the City of Nagoya and was opened to the public in February of the following year.
In May 1945, due to the air raids on Nagoya during World War II, buildings such as the main and small donjons, and the Hommaru Palace were burned down. Fortunately, three towers, three gates, and 1,047 paintings on the sliding doors and walls of the palace survived the fire and have been designated as important national cultural assets. In 1959, the main and small donjons, and the main gate were practically restored to their original form.

Momoyama Castle in Fushimi!
Fushimi Castle, also known as Momoyama Castle or Fushimi-Momoyama Castle. Fushimi Castle is located on a hill, in other words a hilltop castle, which is known in Japanese as a ‘Teikakushiki’. Through numerous instances of being built, burned, and then rebuilt again – even dismantled and scattered throughout Kyoto – this modern replica was built in 1964 and stands today made of mostly concrete. Its history is long and complicated.
The very first version of the castle was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi – one of Japan’s most famous historical characters – in 1592, the year after his retirement from the regency. It took two years to build with a grand total of more than 20,000 workers from twenty provinces working on it, with many elaborate rooms, such as a tea ceremony room plated entirely in gold leaf. Though it looked like a Castle on the outside, it was really meant to be a retirement palace for Hideyoshi, and he had also planned to use it for peace talks with Chinese diplomats seeking an end to the Seven-year War in Korea. Through a stroke of bad luck, though, it was destroyed in an earthquake two years after its building.
Hideyoshi re-commissioned the Castle in 1597, 500 meters away from the original site; however, Hideyoshi died before he could see the second version completed and the Toyotomi clan moved to Osaka Castle in 1598. Thus, the castle came to be controlled by Torii Mototada, a vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu and a vital figure in Japanese history.
In 1600, during a war when Japan had split into two factions – the army of the East led by Tokugawa and the army of the West led by Mouri Terutomo – Fushimi Castle went under siege by Ishida Mitsunari. In an act of bravery, Torii Mototada defended the Castle for eleven days, allowing time for his lord Tokunaga to amass an army which would tip the scales in his favor at the final Battle of Sekigahara. This Battle marked the final victory of Tokugawa Ieyasu over all his rivals. At the end of the eleven days, Torii and his men committed suicide and the castle was destroyed by fire.
The castle was soon reconstructed in 1602 under the order of Tokugawa Ieyasu. However, in 1619 a decision was made to dismantle the castle and incorporate its parts into temples all over Japan. Spectacularly, to this day you can see in several temples in Kyoto such as Yogen-in, Genko-an, and Hosen-in a blood-stained ceiling which was the floor of the corridor at Fushimi Castle where Torii Mototada committed suicide. Finally, in 1625, the castle was abandoned for what seemed to be for good.
In 1912 the tomb of Emperor Meiji was built on the original site of the castle, and in 1964 the final replica was completed. The castle had served as the museum of the life and campaigns of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but it was closed to the public in 2003.

Daimyo Nagai Naomasa’s Kōshō-ji Temple in Uji!
Reestablished in 1648, Kōshō-ji Temple, with its white Chinese-style gate, reflects the solemn atmosphere of the Zen sect. The slope between the riverside and the temple is called Kotozaka, one of the 12 Beauty Spots of Uji. Here you can enjoy the tinted autumnal leaves.
In 1233, after his return from his study mission to China, Dōgen Zenji founded the Kōshō-ji Temple, the first Sōtō temple in Fushimi Fukakusa, just south of the ancient capital Kyoto. During medieval warring, fire destroyed the compound and many priceless scriptures. In 1648, the daimyo of Yodo, Nagai Naomasa rebuilt it at Uji, its present location. The main worship hall is traditionally said to have been made from parts of Fushimi castle.
After Dōgen Zenji’s death, the Kōshō-ji Temple ceased to exist. But the abbot Banan Eishu revived it to serve as a centre for the severe and simple style of Zen inherited from Dōgen Zenji. During the Edo period (1603-1867), novices from all over Japan came to train at the Koshoji, which, together with the Eiheiji and the Sojiji, cultivated many outstanding monks.
As well as a place of great scenic beauty, Uji, where the Kōshō-ji Temple is located, is famous for its green tea. Immediately inside the temple gate, a slope-called Kotozaka, because of its resemblance to the Japanese koto harp-leads gently upward through murmuring streams. Rich stands of favourite Japanese pine, peach, plum, willow, cherry, and maple-enhance the loveliness of the grounds.
Dōgen Zenji was a Japanese Zen Buddhist teacher born in Kyōto. He founded the Sōtō school of Zen in Japan after travelling to China and training under Rujing, a master of the Chinese Caodong lineage.
Nagai Naomasa was a Japanese daimyo of the Edo period, who ruled the Uruido, Koga and Yodo Domains. The eldest son of Nagai Naokatsu, he fought at the Battle of Sekigahara and the Siege of Osaka.
Gyoban is a wooden fish-shaped drum, which serves as a signal to start and end rituals, meditation sessions and meals. The fish-shaped drums are common in Zen temples in Japan. Gyoban is also called Gyoko, Mokugyoku, or Ho. In Buddhism, the fish, which never sleeps, symbolises wakefulness and devotion to training.
