France: FEMEN urinates on Ukrainian president *Explicit Material*
Members of FEMEN protested in front of the Ukrainian embassy in Paris Sunday, the latest action by the group in the French capital. They were protesting the decision by Ukraine's government not to sign an association agreement with the European Union. Around 9:40 a.m. local time (0840 GMT), five FEMEN members arrived in a taxi and undressed in front of the embassy. They then proceeded to defecate on an image of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, shouting slogans such as 'Yanukovych piss off' and 'Ukraine to the EU.' Said FEMEN founder Inna Shevchenko: "Dictatorship in its pure form is already in Ukraine. That's why we are coming today here to pee on this face and the face who is bringing dictatorship, pure dictatorship, to Ukraine and protection and influence of Russia, of Putin. And we are giving an alarm to Europe that we need help. And no one has to hear this face, we just have to pee on his opinion." The decision by Ukraine not to enter into an association agreement has triggered the largest protests that country has seen since the 2004 Orange Revolution.- published: 01 Dec 2013

President Obama worried about violence in Ukraine
On January 31, 2014, US President Barack Obama spoke directly on the current situation in Ukraine. - (The United States of America has) been actively engaged in what is happening in Ukraine - 0:15 Vice President Joe Biden has spoken with President Viktor Yanukovych about rules that restrict protests and free speech is counterproductive and is something the United States is against. - 0:35 There has to be a way to restructure the Ukrainian government that allows the voices of the opposition to be heard, more legitimate government. - 1:04 The people of Ukraine are clearly looking to Europe and the West as a partner in a more free, more free market based economy. - 1:38 The people of Ukraine do not want to see their aspirations for a free society, and future integrated with Europe more closely, is foreclosed. Old style politics. - 2:19 The internet, smart phones, Google, technology and information show that information cannot be bottled up. - 2:43 I'm always worried about violence in Ukraine. The United States is engaging on a daily basis with the Ukrainian government to obtain a positive outcome. They drove to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's residence, furious over a decision by the government in November to turn its back on closer ties with the European Union and turn instead to former Soviet master Moscow. They were joined by over a thousand protesters who who walked 10 kilometers from the nearest metro station. Sunday's protest follows a prominent activist and opposition journalist being dragged from her car and badly beaten on Wednesday. Tetyana Chornovol is known for her investigative reporting into corruption among top government officials. She remains hospitalised. The attack has breathed new life into more than a month of opposition protests in the capital. As thousands protested outside the president's residence, tens of thousands remained in Independence Square listening to the speeches of government opposition leaders. The meeting took place after McCain addressed hundreds of thousands of protesters packed into Kyiv's Independence Square on Sunday, supporting them and their European ambitions. McCain threatened sanctions against Ukraine if authorities use more violence against protesters. Yanukovych has faced mass protests since his U-turn away from Europe and a heavy police crackdown against demonstrators. Ukraine is looking for help with its creaking economy: it needs to cover an external funding gap of 12 billion euros next year. Catherine Aston, EU foreign policy chief, said a deal can still be worked out. "We are very concerned when we look at some of the things that have been said and my purpose in talking to President Yanukovytch was to discover what these short-term economic issues are that have prevented him from signing and I feel that we can work with him to resolve those," said Ashton. On the other side of the political tug-of-war is Russia. Extra money could be on the table at a meeting on Tuesday between Yanukovych and Russian President Vladimir Putin. But Russia, which for centuries controlled or exerted heavy influence on Ukraine, wants the country to join a customs union analogous to the EU, which also includes Belarus and Kazakhstan.
