Third Stream is a term coined in 1957 by composer Gunther Schuller, in a lecture at Brandeis University, to describe a musical genre that is a synthesis of classical music and jazz. Improvisation is generally seen as a vital component of Third Stream.
In 1961, Schuller defined Third Stream as "a new genre of music located about halfway between jazz and classical music". Schuller insisted that "by definition there is no such thing as 'Third Stream Jazz'".
Schuller noted that while purists on both sides of Third Stream objected to tainting their favorite music with the other, more strenuous objections were typically made by jazz musicians who felt such efforts were "an assault on their traditions." Schuller writes that "by designating the music as a 'separate, Third Stream,' the other two mainstreams could go about their way unaffected by the attempts at fusion." Because Third Stream draws on classical as much as jazz, it is generally required that composers and performers be proficient in both genres.
Jake Shimabukuro (born November 3, 1976 in Honolulu, Hawaii) is a ukulele virtuoso and composer known for his fast and complex finger work. His music combines elements of jazz, blues, funk, rock, bluegrass, classical, folk, and flamenco. Shimabukuro has written numerous original compositions, including the entire soundtracks to two Japanese films, Hula Girls (2007) and the Japanese remake of Sideways (2009).
Well known in Hawaii and Japan during his early solo career in the early 2000s, Shimabukuro became famous internationally in 2006, when a video of him playing a virtuosic rendition of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was posted on YouTube without his knowledge and became one of the first viral videos on that site. His concert engagements, collaborations with legendary musicians, media appearances, and music production have snowballed since then. In 2012, an award-winning documentary was released tracking his life, career, and music, titled Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings; it has screened in a variety of festivals, aired repeatedly on PBS, and been released on DVD.
A stream is a body of water with a current, confined within a bed and stream banks. Depending on its location or certain characteristics, a stream may be referred to as a branch, brook, beck, burn, creek, crick, gill (occasionally ghyll), kill, lick, mill race, rill, river, syke, bayou, rivulet, streamage, wash, run, or runnel.
Streams are important as conduits in the water cycle, instruments in groundwater recharge, and corridors for fish and wildlife migration. The biological habitat in the immediate vicinity of a stream is called a riparian zone. Given the status of the ongoing Holocene extinction, streams play an important corridor role in connecting fragmented habitats and thus in conserving biodiversity. The study of streams and waterways in general is known as surface hydrology and is a core element of environmental geography.

Hey everyone, been a while since I uploaded anything. I finally was able to get the videos out of my camera so here is a relatively old video I took of me playing Third Stream by Jake. I've been practicing this song off and of for four years now, and I finally feel it's worthy of uploading. Of course, there's some little mistakes here and there but I think the gist of the song is there. Hope you guys enjoy my unorthodox approach to this song!
During Jake's 2009 Europe tour he made a stop in San Sebastian, Spain for the San Sebastian Jazz Festival. Jake packed the house and gave a performance to remember. Here he plays his original piece "Third Stream" and ends it with a huge exclamation point. Performance Date: 07.23.2009
"From Here to There" was commissioned by NEC from past president Gunther Schuller, who coined the term "Third Stream" as the fusion he foresaw of jazz and classical idioms, and created NEC's program of studies devoted to its blossoming, now called Contemporary Improvisation. This performance by Charles Peltz conducting the NEC Wind Ensemble, was the world premiere of "From Here to There" recorded live in Jordan Hall, Boston, March 6, 2014. As New England Conservatory President, Gunther Schuller steered NEC through one of the most turbulent and formative decades of American and Conservatory history, beginning with NEC’s centennial year. During his tenure as President from 1967–1977, as the Western world rocked to the rhythms of social upheaval and burgeoning youth culture, Schuller formal...
