Chile to Kili: Driving change from the seat of a bicycle
The goal: Ride from Chile to Kilimanjaro
Elvis Munis, 25, of Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, is bicycling around the world to raise awareness about environmental issues and funds for scholarships to support students in Africa to study resource management in college.
The distance of this trip is about 80 000kms or 50 000m and will traverse some 41 countries completely unsupported.
Elvis’s journey started in Santiago, Chile and takes him through Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Mexico, USA, Canada, Alaska, across the Bearing Sea (by any means) into Russia, Mongolia, China, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, across the Caspian Sea into Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Austria, Germany, France, Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and ending at the foot of Kilimanjaro, Tanzania—Elvis's home.
Elvis, and any riders who dare to join him, must locate and carry their own food, shelter, and resources throughout the trip. Most nights will be spent camping in tents or staying with local contacts.
If you’re on his route and can offer a place to stay or a hot meal, drop us a line or if you want to have a semi-real-time chat with Elvis, or just tell him "good luck", post a little something here.
Inspiration:
This ride was inspired by the Gandhi’s famous quotation- “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
This has been a long-time favorite quote of both event organizers and triggered a conversation on the shores of Zanzibar that lead to the creation of this life-altering event.
Change must come from the inside. Elvis, a 25 year old Tanzanian naturalist and student, identifies one of the major problems in his country as the lack of opportunity for Tanzanians to obtain the education necessary to manage their own natural resources. Tanzania’s economy is dependent on conservation-based tourism, yet management decisions and safari companies tend to be run by foreigners. This ride will raise awareness about the lack of educational opportunities and therefor lack of upward mobility afforded to Tanzanian citizens.
By volunteering to bike around the world in an effort to raise money for a scholarship program for conservation students like himself, Elvis truly is “being” the change he wants to see.

Fashion Project - Oscar Lawalata & Justin Smith at Jakarta Fashion Week 2011 | Toby Meadows Seminar & Workshop
For Jakarta Fashion Week (JFW) 2011-12, British Council invites Justin Smith (www.jsmithesquire.com), an award-winning British milliner, to showcase collections of his bespoke hats, in collaboration with Oscar Lawalata, an international award-winning Indonesian fashion designer, in a runway show on 14 November 2011 and fashion exhibition throughout the fashion week. The collaboration happened very organically after Justin’s first visit to Indonesian in 2010 during the British Council’s Young Creative Entrepreneur (YCE) Fashion Award programme, which Justin won in London in 2010 and Oscar won in Indonesia in 2008 and then London in 2009.
Justin promptly committed his £5,000 prize money to having a research trip to Sintang and Yogyakarta in August 2011 together with Oscar where they explored the rich traditional techniques, crafts and materials. The trip then inspired them for their collaboration which they showcased for JFW 2011-12 with the theme “The Culture Incarnation”. Working in collaboration with Oscar, Justin hoped to create something new that bridges the gap between the leading edges of British and Indonesian fashion and at the same time reflecting the deep respect for the traditions and artistry of both cultures.
The British Council fashion programme stretches for a week including various facets such as opening party for the fashion exhibition of Justin Smith and Oscar Lawalata, which was officially opened by Dr. Mari E Pangestu, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, and was well-attended by key figures in the fashion industry such as Ms Svida Alisjahbana, CEO of Femina Group, as well as international ambassadors such as the British Ambassador, the Mexican Ambassador, the Japanese Ambassador, and representatives from the Australian Embassy and Embassy of Bulgaria. It was followed by a full-house fashion show showcasing 55 collections showcasing Justin and Oscar’s collaboration.
As wrap up activities, Justin provided master classes and workshop in Binus International University and La Salle College, sharing his experience on how a creative entrepreneur evolve and make it happen amidst the bustling fashion industry in Europe – his work now includes widely acclaimed collections and he has regularly shown at London Fashion Week, Milan, Paris and Rome and through collaborations with various designers including Moschino, Aganovich and (es)* Artisanal.
UK expert of the fashion industry, Toby Meadows, from the Centre of Fashion Enterprise (CFE), was also present for the fashion week. Not only did he experience first-hand the fashion week in Indonesia, but also to deliver various capacity-building workshops and seminars. The writer of an international best-selling book “How to set up and run a fashion business” which is translated into 6 different languages, shared his experience and expertise to a vast array of the fashion industry key holders: fashion students, teachers and lecturers; young and upcoming fashion designers; as well as the government officials.
British Council would like to thank our partners: Femina Group, Binus International University, Centre of Fashion Entreprise, APPMI (Asosiasi Perancang dan Pengusaha Mode Indonesia) and Oscar Lawalata Culture for supporting this project.

Bruges Group - Immigration & The EU
SIR ANDREW GREEN KCMG
Sir Andrew Green was a professional diplomat for 35 years. He is the Chairman of MigrationWatch UK. Asked how he came to be involved in migration issues, Sir Andrews said that he first became aware of the problem when he was the Foreign Secretary’s principal adviser on the Middle East in the mid-90s. At that time he spent two years trying, on the Prime Minister instructions, to remove from Britain Islamic extremists who were claiming asylum but was frustrated by the British courts.

MigrationWatch UK was founded in 2001 by Sir Andrew after he decided that immigration was a matter which should be brought to the attention of the public. MigrationWatch UK is an independent organisation; who believe that the public are entitled to know the facts about the numbers coming into Britain.
RICHARD SHEPHERD MP
Richard Shepherd is the Conservative Member of Parliament for Aldridge Brownhills. He has been a champion for more open and transparent government and is known and respected for the long campaign he fought for freedom of information. Richard Shepherd is also a campaigner against compulsory metrication.
He has had a distinguished Parliamentary career. Previously he has been a winner of both the Spectator's Award as Backbencher of the Year and Parliamentarian of the Year.
Richard Shepherd was also a Maastricht Rebel and fought for a referendum on that Treaty. He lost the Whip in November 1994 after voting against the European Communities (Finance) Bill, but had it returned four months later.
Speech by Sir Andrew Green
My subject tonight is immigration and the impact of the EU. Now both these topics, both immigration and the EU are matters of very considerable concern to the electorate and yet strangely they are very seldom discussed on their merits. Indeed immigration is seldom discussed at all for fear I think of being branded as either a xenophobe or a racist or both.
Well as the Chairman said, having spent my career in the Foreign Service I am not in the least bit concerned about either of those charges.
I’m going to speak for about 20 minutes and then take questions to cover the points of most interest to you. I suggest that if we are to carry conviction on European matters and immigration matters then we must be clear where they overlap and reinforce and where they don’t, so I will try to disentangle those two subjects a little. I’m going to start by sketching out the scale and nature of the immigration problem that our country now faces, then I’ll go on to outline the European aspects and I’ll conclude by suggesting a constructive way forward.
But first of all the problem. We are not opposed to immigration and still less to immigrants, but we do think the number has got out of hand, we do think that the Government have lost control of the borders; I would have thought that that was obvious. Immigration on a modest scale is a natural part of an open economy and we favour that. We don’t favour what is going on now but it is a surprisingly new problem.
As you can see from this, this is the net immigration into England and actually there was no immigration until the early 80s, it was emigration, a net outflow of people. But it wasn’t until 1997 that the numbers started to rise very sharply indeed and they rose as a result of action and inaction by the Government. So talk of a nation of immigrants is frankly claptrap. The foreign immigration is now running at about a third of a million a year or 900 a day, that’s net. So in total there have been roughly three million net immigration into Britain in the last ten years, that’s the ones we know about, there are also of course illegal immigrants of the order of maybe three quarters of a million. So perhaps it’s not surprising that public concern has mounted over that time.
Quite intriguing, a lot of concern in 79/80, when I think Mrs Thatcher raised it as an election issue, when during the years of Conservative Government as it happens, virtually no interest and people felt that it was a matter that was being dealt with satisfactorily and surprise surprise from 1997 it started to shoot up. And of course that point is the financial crisis of last autumn and now immigration is second equal with crime. I think something like economy is top with 65%, immigration and crime about 30% and then you get down to trivial matters like health and education which are 15%.
So what’s the impact of all this? Well the impact on the population is frankly enormous. This shows you the impact on England, almost all immigration is to England by the way, about 95% of foreign immigration and on the Government’s own figures our population will increase by ten million in the next 20 years and 70% of that will be a result of immigration. These are their numbers not mine

Apologetics of the Christian Faith on Bulgarian National Television
Bulgarian audio with English Subtitles
On June 26, 2010, the second largest national TV network in Bulgaria aired a pre-recorded “right to response” to one of their shows. The offensive show, which aired on March 27, contained anti-Christian and anti-evangelical statements accusing all Christians of pedophilia, sexual immorality, calling church-donations a “shadowy evangelical economy,” announcing that the law for church registration is too liberal, and alluding to evangelical churches as "secretive sects."
There have been many such slanderous anti-religious broadcasts in the past several years in Bulgarian media. This show was just the one that went over the top.
It took us three long months to gather Christian support for a response and legal negotiations with the producers and the TV station representatives to achieve this result.
The response, which you are about to see, countered those statements and contained two parts. In the first part I addressed the issues from a legal and Biblical perspective. The second part of the show presented a brief history of the evangelical church. The shots in that part are archives of Studio 865, Bulgarian Christian production ministry. They completed the filming of the video.
It is the common agreement that this type of aired response, in defense of the faith, is an unprecedented event in Bulgaria, a former self-declared communist and atheist nation.
Our rough estimate is that possibly over one million Bulgarian viewers have seen the 20 min presentation and have heard the good news of Jesus Christ.
False media representations of the Truth abound. It is our duty and mission as Christians to speak out against injustice and lies which misrepresent the Person and the work of God and Jesus Christ, our Savior. Thanks to all who expressed their support in this work.
