smARTpower Trailer
smARTpower builds on U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's vision of "smart power" diplomacy, which embraces the use of a full range of diplomatic tools - in this case the visual arts - to bring people together and foster greater understanding. The smARTpower initiative is an integral part of the United States' people-to-people diplomacy efforts that engage people, especially underserved youth, and create opportunities for dialogue that build a foundation for greater understanding among people of all cultures, communities, and countries.
smARTpower is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, administered by the Bronx Museum of the Arts, with additional support from the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation; and Lori Schiff Chemla and ALTOUR.

U.S. Department of State Honors Five Art21 Featured Artists with the Inaugural Medal of Arts
Beginning in November 2012, the U.S. Department of State celebrates the 50th anniversary of Art in Embassies (AIE), a program that facilitates the Department of State’s public diplomacy through the power of the visual arts.
As part of the celebration, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will honor five artists—Cai Guo-Qiang, Jeff Koons, Shahzia Sikander, Kiki Smith, and Carrie Mae Weems—by awarding each artist with the U.S. Department of State’s inaugural Medal of Arts. The Medal of Arts is given in recognition of each artist’s outstanding commitment to the AIE program and international cultural exchange.
Over the last decade, Art21 has worked closely with all five honorees, each of whom has extended their relationship with our organization beyond their initial filming sessions for the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series. We have experienced first-hand each artist’s passionate commitment to facilitating dialogue through visual art, across many cultures. Through our own international screening programs, we have witnessed conversations generated by the work and words of these artists in communities around the world.
Art21 is proud to support these artists in their commitment to cross-cultural dialogue, and we congratulate each artist—Cai Guo-Qiang, Jeff Koons, Shahzia Sikander, Kiki Smith, and Carrie Mae Weems—for receiving this very special recognition for their efforts from the U.S. Department of State.

Historian & Author Taylor Branch
"It's a challenge when a journalist is put in the awkward position of writing about a friend -- all the more so when that friend happens to be the president-elect of the United States. But for Taylor Branch, that exact situation produced a terrific book -- one of the most detailed and vivid portraits of a White House and its occupants ever to end up between hard covers. It was in December of 1992, after Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton defeated incumbent George H.W. Bush, that Branch found himself face-to-face with the incoming leader of the free world some twenty years after they were thick as thieves. In 1972, Clinton and Branch and a third friend, Julius Glickman, now a Houston lawyer, co-chaired the Texas presidential campaign of Democrat George McGovern. Branch and Clinton, and Clinton's then girlfriend Hillary Rodham, shared an apartment in Central Austin. But after Richard Nixon trounced McGovern, the friends went their separate ways -- and didn't see each other until Clinton reached out to Branch, by then an acclaimed author, to see if he would be the personal historian of his administration. The conversations that resulted over the next several years, mostly recorded in secret in the East Wing, spanned the high and low points of the Clinton era, and as such provide rich material for Branch's book, The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History from the President, which was published in late 2009. For 62-year-old Branch, a graduate of the University of North Carolina and the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University, it's a worthy cap to a career whose highlight is a multi-volume, Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Martin Luther King Jr. Of course, Branch didn't know King the way he knew Clinton -- warts and all -- which is why this latest effort is, in so many ways, an undeniably compelling must-read." - Evan Smith, Texas Monthly Talks, Broadcast 11.18.09
