It is also known as padmarajarathri. Alternate common spellings include Sivaratri, Shivaratri, Sivarathri, and Shivaratri. It is celebrated every year on the 13th night/14th day of the Maagha month of the Hindu calendar. Since many different calendars are followed by various ethno-linguistic groups of India, the month and the Tithi name are not uniform all over India and Nepal. Celebrated in the dark fortnight or Krishna Paksha(waning moon) of the month of Maagha according to the Shalivahana or Gujarati Vikrama or Phalguna according to the Vikrama era. The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of Bael or Bilva/Vilvam leaves to Lord Shiva, all-day fasting and an all-night-long vigil(jagarana). All through the day the devotees, chant the sacred Panchakshara mantra dedicated to Lord "Om Namah Shivaya". In accordance with scriptural and discipleship traditions, penances are performed in order to gain boons in the practice of Yoga and meditation, in order to reach life's summum bonum steadily and swiftly. A week-long International Mandi Shivratri Fair held at Mandi in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh every year is one of the major tourist attractions in the state. Samudra Madhan Hindus celebrate Maha Shivratri, because -- according to Vedic Literatures -- there is a legend associated with it called Neelkanta. After drinking the poison, Shiva went to the Himalayas to meditate. Realizing that the nectar of immortality was found, the asuras tried to steal it from the devas, as they wanted to become more powerful than the devas in order to be able to destroy them. After a "series of divine interventions," the devas emerged as the victors and received the gift of immortality. By drinking the poison, Shiva sacrificed himself for the safety of his family(universe). Maha Shivratri is enthusiastically celebrated in Mauritius. Devotees from all over the island walk to the Ganga talab. (Grand Bassin) They usually start the pilgrimage 3 or 4 days before Maha Shivaratri and, once reaching Ganga talab, the devotees collect the sacred water to bring home and pour on shiv lingams for their local temples. Many prayers are done and some devotees stay awake for the 4 pehers prayers as well. Many sacrifices are done by Mauritian Devotees and many tourists come especially to visit the lake for this festival After creation was complete, Parvati asked Lord Shiva which devotees and rituals pleased him the most. The Lord replied that the 14th night of the new moon, in the dark fortnight during the month of Phalgun, is his most favourite day. Parvati repeated these words to her friends, from whom the word spread over all creation. Another version relates that the whole world was facing destruction and Goddess Parvati worshiped her husband Shiva to save it. She prayed for the jivas (living souls) remaining in seed-like particles of gold dust in a lump of wax, since Pralaya is brought about by Him. Shivratri is also when Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva married agai. Maha Shivratri, the night of the worship of Lord Shiva, occurs on the 14th night of the new moon during the dark half of the month of Phalguna. It falls on a moonless February night, when Hindus offer special prayer to the lord of destruction. Shivratri (Sanskrit 'ratri' = night) is the night when he is said to have performed the Tandava Nritya or the dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction. The festival is observed for one day and one night only. Click Below for More Peaceful & Religious Music Videos :- http://goo.gl/j8k2n- published: 25 Feb 2014

Maha Shivaratri 2014: The Great Night of Shiva
Maha Shivaratri 2014: The Great Night of Shiva
http://www.astroved.com/maha_shivaratri.aspx The night of Shiva is called the Shivaratri. Why Shivaratri is so important or the night of Shiva is so important? Because it is the night on which everyone has the potential to be awakened. The moon is very closely associated with the mind principle. Every phase of the moon brings specific energy into the world, affecting the psycho physical system, particularly the mind and you all know that during full moon times, people get excited. Especially people who are in mental institutions, they are a little bit imbalanced during that time. This is because of the brain`s response to the full moon. In the same way, I have looked at studies of what happens to the brain and mental state during the new moon time. http://www.astroved.com/maha_shivaratri.aspx These are contemporary western studies. But the rishis knew better, the yogis and siddhas knew better about the new moon time and the full moon time. During that time, you have great opportunity to come into contact with the higher states of consciousness, particularly the night of Shiva, which is called Shivaratri, which comes only once a year for everyone to become awakened. You can skip meditating all throughout the year, not on that particular night. You just keep vigil on that night and do the practice for that one night in the year that is sufficient for you to gain a lot of spiritual power. http://www.astroved.com/maha_shivaratri.aspx Because what happens on the new moon time, generally speaking, is that the mind principle is minimum. So the mind comes out of the soul. The soul consciousness is intact, omniscient. Mind is not omniscient; it is the linear principle that comes fluctuating so it becomes a problem for so many things. If the mind disappears then you get into the highest consciousness and that condition is not available on a daily basis. On the new moons it is available, but on the new moon of Shivaratri, it is the most important time that you can take advantage of this very special energy. With little training, given in the use of sound of certain parts of the brain, you will get into a very deep state, and eventually transcendental experience and enlightenment and that is the significance of Shivaratri. Bam Bam Bhole Om Namah Shivaya - 01:49:28 Top Shiv Bhajan - Shiva Maha Mantra ( Maha Shivaratri Special ) Maha Shivratri, the night of the worship of Lord Shiva, occurs on the 14th night of the new moon during the dark half of the month of Phalguna. According to the Puranas, during the great mythical churning of the ocean called Samudra Manthan, a pot of poison emerged from the ocean. The gods and the demons were terrified as it could destroy the entire world. When they ran to Shiva for help, he in order to protect the world, drank the deadly poison but held it in his throat instead of swallowing it. This turned his throat blue, and since then he came to be known as 'Nilkantha', the blue-throated one. Shivratri celebrates this event by which Shiva saved the world. Shivratri is considered especially auspicious for women. Married women pray for the well being of their husbands and sons, while unmarried women pray for an ideal husband like Shiva, who is the spouse of Kali, Parvati and Durga. But generally it is believed that anyone who utters the name of Shiva during Shivratri with pure devotion is freed from all sins. He or she reaches the abode of Shiva and is liberated from the cycle of birth and death. On the day of Shivratri, a three-tiered platform is built around a fire. The topmost plank represents 'swargaloka' (heaven), the middle one 'antarikshaloka' (space) and the bottom one 'bhuloka' (earth). Eleven 'kalash' or urns, are kept on the 'swargaloka' plank symbolizing the 11 manifestations of the 'Rudra' or destructive Shiva. These are decorated with the leaves of 'bilva' or 'bael' (Aegle marmelos) and mango atop a coconut representing the head of Shiva. The uncut shank of the coconut symbolizes his tangled hair and the three spots on the fruit Shiva's three eyes. The phallus symbol representing Shiva is called the lingam. It is usually made of granite, soapstone, quartz, marble or metal, and has a 'yoni' or vagina as its base representing the union of organs. Devotees circumambulate the lingam and worship it throughout the night. It is bathed every three hours with the 5 sacred offerings of a cow, called the 'panchagavya' - milk, sour milk, urine, butter and dung. Then the 5 foods of immortality - milk, clarified butter, curd, honey and sugar are placed before the lingam. Datura fruit and flower, though poisonous, are believed to be sacred to Shiva and thus offered to him. All through the day the devotees keep severe fast, chant the sacred Panchakshara mantra "Om Namah Shivaya", make offerings of flowers and incense to the Lord amidst ringing of temple bells. They maintain long vigils during the night, keeping awake to listen to stories, hymns and songs. The fast is broken only the next morning, after the nightlong worship. In Kashmir, the festival is held for 15 days. The 13th day is observed as a day of fast followed by a family feast.- published: 22 Feb 2014
