Pennine Way
Coordinates: 53°22′14″N 1°49′00″W / 53.3706°N 1.8168°W / 53.3706; -1.8168 The Pennine Way is a National Trail in England, with a small section in Scotland. The trail runs 267 miles (429 km) from Edale, in the northern Derbyshire Peak District, north through the Yorkshire Dales and the Northumberland National Park and ends at Kirk Yetholm, just inside the Scottish border. The path runs along the Pennine hills, sometimes described as the "backbone of England". Although not the United Kingdom's longest National Trail (this distinction belongs to the 630-mile (1,014 km) long South West Coast Path), it is according to the Ramblers' Association "one of Britain's best known and toughest".
History
The path was the idea of the journalist and rambler Tom Stephenson, inspired by similar trails in the United States of America, particularly the Appalachian Trail. Stephenson proposed the concept in an article for the Daily Herald in 1935, and later lobbied Parliament for the creation of an official trail. The walk was originally planned to end at Wooler but eventually it was decided that Kirk Yetholm would be the finishing point. The final section of the path was declared open in a ceremony held on Malham Moor on 24 April 1965. Before the official opening of the Pennine Way the British Army was invited to test the whole route, a task which they accomplished in one day. Junior soldiers from the Junior Tradesman's Regiment of the Army Catering Corps, based in Aldershot, were split into patrols of four or five and each was allocated a 15-mile (approximately) section of the walk. A report was then provided on the signage and route feasibility.

Hiking the UK's Oldest & Most Challenging National Trail: The Pennine Way
I rarely know what to expect when I set off on an adventure and my trip to the Peak District and Derbyshire in the United Kingdom was no different. I must admit, I may have held a slight prejudice in thinking that UK wouldn't quite compare to the exotic beauty of other locations, but man was I wrong. I was constantly surprised at the amount of natural beauty and stunning views to be found along the Pennine Way, Britain’s oldest and most challenging National Trail. Setting off from the Old Nags Head in Edale, and every step along the 268-mile long trail to Scotland, the trail had plenty of adventure. Bob Langley took a long wander along Britain's longest public footpath over the Pennines and got to thinking about the various methods that had been used to cross "nature's iron curtain" between Lancashire and Yorkshire over the years. At the time of recording, the latest means of traversing the mountain chain was the recently opened M62, but before it there was the means of the railway, the canal through the Standedge Tunnel, a trusty steed and a mysterious mountain 'road' that has been puzzling historians for hundreds of years. #JoGLE ep.21: Pennine Way 1-3: Kirk Yetholm to Bellingham | 40km over the beautiful Cheviot Hills
In April 2023, I set off on my biggest adventure so far: A 1600mile long hike all across Britain from Dunnet Head in Scotland to Lizard Point in Cornwall. I'm going solo with my rescue dog Otto, (wild) camping along the way. Come along for Days 46 to 48 where we started the Pennine Way (southbound) and finally crossed the border to England. We had our hardest day so far and did a lot of climbing going over the Cheviot Hills. This first 40km-stretch was really remote with no water source for over 30km and definitely tough. But it was also incredibly beautiful with amazing views and I found a lovely spot to wildcamp. I rarely know what to expect when I set off on an adventure and my trip to the Peak District and Derbyshire in the United Kingdom was no different. I must admit, I may have held a slight prejudice in thinking that UK wouldn't quite compare to the exotic beauty of other locations, but man was I wrong. I was constantly surprised at the amount of natural beauty and stunning views to be found along the Pennine Way, Britain’s oldest and most challenging National Trail. Setting off from the Old Nags Head in Edale, and every step along the 268-mile long trail to Scotland, the trail had plenty of adventure.
There are so many charms to the Pennine Way, it was a pleasure to hike. The day that stands out to me the most was the day we hiked from Low Force Falls all the way to High Cup Nick. This 17-mile day had plenty of beauty, capped off by one of the most stunning campsites I've had the pleasure of camping at. The views there will stick with me for a long time.
Getting to climb on world-class grit stone was quite the experience. I can see why so many climbers migrate to the Peak District. Friendly locals, great local fare, caving at Alum Pot, and the opportunity to climb at Stanage was fantastic—Peak District & Derbyshire offers so much more than just great hiking and I hope you enjoy this episode of Trackin’ Dirt as much as I enjoyed my time in England!

I rarely know what to expect when I set off on an adventure and my trip to the Peak District and Derbyshire in the United Kingdom was no different. I must admit, I may have held a slight prejudice in thinking that UK wouldn't quite compare to the exotic beauty of other locations, but man was I wrong. I was constantly surprised at the amount of natural beauty and stunning views to be found along the Pennine Way, Britain’s oldest and most challenging National Trail. Setting off from the Old Nags Head in Edale, and every step along the 268-mile long trail to Scotland, the trail had plenty of adventure.
There are so many charms to the Pennine Way, it was a pleasure to hike. The day that stands out to me the most was the day we hiked from Low Force Falls all the way to High Cup Nick. This 17-mile day had plenty of beauty, capped off by one of the most stunning campsites I've had the pleasure of camping at. The views there will stick with me for a long time.
Getting to climb on world-class grit stone was quite the experience. I can see why so many climbers migrate to the Peak District. Friendly locals, great local fare, caving at Alum Pot, and the opportunity to climb at Stanage was fantastic—Peak District & Derbyshire offers so much more than just great hiking and I hope you enjoy this episode of Trackin’ Dirt as much as I enjoyed my time in England!

Bob Langley took a long wander along Britain's longest public footpath over the Pennines and got to thinking about the various methods that had been used to cross "nature's iron curtain" between Lancashire and Yorkshire over the years.
At the time of recording, the latest means of traversing the mountain chain was the recently opened M62, but before it there was the means of the railway, the canal through the Standedge Tunnel, a trusty steed and a mysterious mountain 'road' that has been puzzling historians for hundreds of years.

In April 2023, I set off on my biggest adventure so far: A 1600mile long hike all across Britain from Dunnet Head in Scotland to Lizard Point in Cornwall. I'm going solo with my rescue dog Otto, (wild) camping along the way.
Come along for Days 46 to 48 where we started the Pennine Way (southbound) and finally crossed the border to England. We had our hardest day so far and did a lot of climbing going over the Cheviot Hills. This first 40km-stretch was really remote with no water source for over 30km and definitely tough. But it was also incredibly beautiful with amazing views and I found a lovely spot to wildcamp.

Town Yetholm-Lamb Hill (16.8mi/27,1km)
Lamb Hill-Byrness (9.6mi/15,4km)
Byrness-Bellingham (16.9mi/27,3km)

Pennine Way
Coordinates: 53°22′14″N 1°49′00″W / 53.3706°N 1.8168°W / 53.3706; -1.8168 The Pennine Way is a National Trail in England, with a small section in Scotland. The trail runs 267 miles (429 km) from Edale, in the northern Derbyshire Peak District, north through the Yorkshire Dales and the Northumberland National Park and ends at Kirk Yetholm, just inside the Scottish border. The path runs along the Pennine hills, sometimes described as the "backbone of England". Although not the United Kingdom's longest National Trail (this distinction belongs to the 630-mile (1,014 km) long South West Coast Path), it is according to the Ramblers' Association "one of Britain's best known and toughest".
History
The path was the idea of the journalist and rambler Tom Stephenson, inspired by similar trails in the United States of America, particularly the Appalachian Trail. Stephenson proposed the concept in an article for the Daily Herald in 1935, and later lobbied Parliament for the creation of an official trail. The walk was originally planned to end at Wooler but eventually it was decided that Kirk Yetholm would be the finishing point. The final section of the path was declared open in a ceremony held on Malham Moor on 24 April 1965. Before the official opening of the Pennine Way the British Army was invited to test the whole route, a task which they accomplished in one day. Junior soldiers from the Junior Tradesman's Regiment of the Army Catering Corps, based in Aldershot, were split into patrols of four or five and each was allocated a 15-mile (approximately) section of the walk. A report was then provided on the signage and route feasibility.
