The 2005 version of War of the Worlds was directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Josh Friedman and David Koepp, loosely based on the novel of the same title by H. G. Wells. It stars Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Justin Chatwin, Miranda Otto and Tim Robbins, with narration by Morgan Freeman.
We see Tom Cruise’s character, Ray Ferrier, fighting for his life and the lives of his family in a world that is crumbling down around him.
This scene occurs about an hour into the film when refugees flee down a street trying to escape the attacking aliens. Ray Ferrier, his son, Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and his daughter, Rachel (Dakota Fanning) are being hustled down a street and onto a Hudson River ferry, grim-looking soldiers hollering at them along the way. They look like cattle or refugees, and every face in the crowd looks exhausted.
Moments later, the family arrives at the ferry. Just before getting onboard, they pause...and then look back over their shoulders, towards the camera: a Tripod has entered the horizon towering over the trees that surround it.

Spielberg’s take on the classic H.G. Wells novel is an exceptionally grim one, drawing on anxieties both primeval, what might befall our children and those all-too-current of dystopian futures resulting from either war, terrorist attacks on a greater scale than September 11, runaway climate change, etc. etc.
Spielberg knows our buttons and he presses them hard. With Spielberg’s cinematic eye is as sharp as ever and with John Williams pulsing, ominous score to match the aliens’ malicious intent. The result is a disaster film that feels intimate and personal. Yes, the film kind of falls apart in the final reel with its abrupt and unsatisfying deus ex machina ending, but by that point, it’s earned more than enough goodwill to balance out the weaker areas.
The film has incredibly seamless special effects, including a lengthy, single take of Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) and his children speeding along a freeway and the scene when the elegant but terrifying Tripod’s attack a Hudson River ferry. Another scene that stands out in the film is the one in Harlan Ogilvy’s basement.
Ray and his daughter Rachel (Dakota Fanning) are separated from his son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and hole up in a basement with an emotionally unstable survivalist, Harlan Ogilvy (Tim Robbins). They’re surrounded by an invader encampment and must lay low while alien surveillance probes and the aliens themselves investigate their basement hideout.
The basement scene is an extraordinary piece of filmmaking; when the alien probe begins poking around the basement and Tim Robbins’ character is simultaneously having a nervous breakdown – it is a meticulously crafted bit of insufferable tension.

#WarOfTheWorlds has everything an essential sci-fic action flick needs: Explosions aplenty, extraterrestrial invasions, and extraordinary lightning storms that bring not just a family but the whole world together. Steven Spielberg’s 9/11 tinged version of H.G. Wells classic novel stars Tom Cruise as a father desperately trying to reunite his family while battling aliens in a doomsday scenario. The film was praised in particular for the cast’s strong performances, as well as its innovative special effects, for which it was nominated at the Academy Awards (alongside Sound Mixing and Sound Editing, all three of which were lost to King Kong).
But did you know…
1) Spielberg tried to keep almost every part of the filmmaking process a secret. Cast and crew were in the dark about the aliens’ appearances, and refused to share the full script. Screenwriter David Koepp comments that "[Spielberg] wouldn't give [the screenplay] to anybody", rather opting to share bits and pieces of it as they became relevant. Actress Miranda Otto was even reluctant to discuss the story with her family: “In the old days people didn't get to know much about movies before they came out and nowadays there's just so much information. I think a bit of mystery is always really good. You don't want to blow all of your cards beforehand."
2) One particularly impressive scene in the film sees the Ferrier clan thrown into the water when several tripod aliens attack the ferry they were trying to use to cross the Hudson River. Shooting the scene in a massive tank, Spielberg played music through underwater speakers to set the mood. However, first he decided to play a prank on Cruise and the crew by blasting the iconic ‘der-dum, der-dum’ theme from his 1975 classic Jaws.

War of the Worlds is a 2005 American science fiction disaster film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Josh Friedman and David Koepp, loosely based on the novel of the same title by H. G. War of the Worlds was a box office success, and became 2005's fourth most successful film both domestically, with $234 million in North America, and $591 million overall. The Red Badge of Gayness
"The Red Badge of Gayness" is episode 45 of Comedy Central's animated series South Park. It originally aired on November 24, 1999.
In the summer of 2013, fans voted "The Red Badge of Gayness" as the best episode of Season 3.
The episode's name is a play on the Red Badge of Courage.
Plot synopsis
As the entire town of South Park is preparing to hold its annual American Civil War reenactment of the (fictional) Battle of Tamarack Hill, the children rehearse as a Union Army rally band.
In the morning of the reenactment, Jimbo informs the reenactors that over 200 people will come to see them reenact the battle, setting a new record. He also takes the time to remind everyone that the primary sponsor of their event is Jagerminz S'more-flavored Schnapps, "the schnapps with the delightful taste of s'mores." In addition, the special guest will be Stan's grandpa, Marvin Marsh. Meanwhile, Cartman comes dressed as General Robert E. Lee, and the boys are outraged by his dressing as a Confederate officer. Evidently under the impression that the reenactment is a competition of some sort, Cartman bets that the South will win the Civil War, and if it does, Stan and Kyle will be his slaves for a month, or vice versa. Knowing that the outcome is supposed to be historical victory for the North as planned, Stan and Kyle eagerly accept the challenge.

The 2005 version of War of the Worlds was directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Josh Friedman and David Koepp, loosely based on the novel of the same title by H. G. Wells. It stars Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Justin Chatwin, Miranda Otto and Tim Robbins, with narration by Morgan Freeman.
We see Tom Cruise’s character, Ray Ferrier, fighting for his life and the lives of his family in a world that is crumbling down around him.
This scene occurs about an hour into the film when refugees flee down a street trying to escape the attacking aliens. Ray Ferrier, his son, Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and his daughter, Rachel (Dakota Fanning) are being hustled down a street and onto a Hudson River ferry, grim-looking soldiers hollering at them along the way. They look like cattle or refugees, and every face in the crowd looks exhausted.
Moments later, the family arrives at the ferry. Just before getting onboard, they pause...and then look back over their shoulders, towards the camera: a Tripod has entered the horizon towering over the trees that surround it.

Spielberg’s take on the classic H.G. Wells novel is an exceptionally grim one, drawing on anxieties both primeval, what might befall our children and those all-too-current of dystopian futures resulting from either war, terrorist attacks on a greater scale than September 11, runaway climate change, etc. etc.
Spielberg knows our buttons and he presses them hard. With Spielberg’s cinematic eye is as sharp as ever and with John Williams pulsing, ominous score to match the aliens’ malicious intent. The result is a disaster film that feels intimate and personal. Yes, the film kind of falls apart in the final reel with its abrupt and unsatisfying deus ex machina ending, but by that point, it’s earned more than enough goodwill to balance out the weaker areas.
The film has incredibly seamless special effects, including a lengthy, single take of Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) and his children speeding along a freeway and the scene when the elegant but terrifying Tripod’s attack a Hudson River ferry. Another scene that stands out in the film is the one in Harlan Ogilvy’s basement.
Ray and his daughter Rachel (Dakota Fanning) are separated from his son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and hole up in a basement with an emotionally unstable survivalist, Harlan Ogilvy (Tim Robbins). They’re surrounded by an invader encampment and must lay low while alien surveillance probes and the aliens themselves investigate their basement hideout.
The basement scene is an extraordinary piece of filmmaking; when the alien probe begins poking around the basement and Tim Robbins’ character is simultaneously having a nervous breakdown – it is a meticulously crafted bit of insufferable tension.

The 2005 version of War of the Worlds was directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Josh Friedman and David Koepp, loosely based on the novel of the same title by H. G. Wells. It stars Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Justin Chatwin, Miranda Otto and Tim Robbins, with narration by Morgan Freeman.
We see Tom Cruise’s character, Ray Ferrier, fighting for his life and the lives of his family in a world that is crumbling down around him.
This scene occurs about an hour into the film when refugees flee down a street trying to escape the attacking aliens. Ray Ferrier, his son, Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and his daughter, Rachel (Dakota Fanning) are being hustled down a street and onto a Hudson River ferry, grim-looking soldiers hollering at them along the way. They look like cattle or refugees, and every face in the crowd looks exhausted.
Moments later, the family arrives at the ferry. Just before getting onboard, they pause...and then look back over their shoulders, towards the camera: a Tripod has entered the horizon towering over the trees that surround it.

Spielberg’s take on the classic H.G. Wells novel is an exceptionally grim one, drawing on anxieties both primeval, what might befall our children and those all-too-current of dystopian futures resulting from either war, terrorist attacks on a greater scale than September 11, runaway climate change, etc. etc.
Spielberg knows our buttons and he presses them hard. With Spielberg’s cinematic eye is as sharp as ever and with John Williams pulsing, ominous score to match the aliens’ malicious intent. The result is a disaster film that feels intimate and personal. Yes, the film kind of falls apart in the final reel with its abrupt and unsatisfying deus ex machina ending, but by that point, it’s earned more than enough goodwill to balance out the weaker areas.
The film has incredibly seamless special effects, including a lengthy, single take of Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) and his children speeding along a freeway and the scene when the elegant but terrifying Tripod’s attack a Hudson River ferry. Another scene that stands out in the film is the one in Harlan Ogilvy’s basement.
Ray and his daughter Rachel (Dakota Fanning) are separated from his son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and hole up in a basement with an emotionally unstable survivalist, Harlan Ogilvy (Tim Robbins). They’re surrounded by an invader encampment and must lay low while alien surveillance probes and the aliens themselves investigate their basement hideout.
The basement scene is an extraordinary piece of filmmaking; when the alien probe begins poking around the basement and Tim Robbins’ character is simultaneously having a nervous breakdown – it is a meticulously crafted bit of insufferable tension.

An ordinary man has to protect his children against alien invaders in this science fiction thriller, freely adapted from the classic story by H.G. Wells. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a dockworker living in New Jersey, divorced from his first wife Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) and estranged from his two children Rachel and Robbie (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin), of whom he has custody on weekends. On one such visitation, looking after the kids becomes a little more difficult when, after a series of strange lighting storms hit his neighborhood, Ray discovers that a fleet of death-ray robotic spaceships have emerged nearby, part of the first wave of an all-out alien invasion of the Earth. #WarOfTheWorlds has everything an essential sci-fic action flick needs: Explosions aplenty, extraterrestrial invasions, and extraordinary lightning storms that bring not just a family but the whole world together. Steven Spielberg’s 9/11 tinged version of H.G. Wells classic novel stars Tom Cruise as a father desperately trying to reunite his family while battling aliens in a doomsday scenario. The film was praised in particular for the cast’s strong performances, as well as its innovative special effects, for which it was nominated at the Academy Awards (alongside Sound Mixing and Sound Editing, all three of which were lost to King Kong).
But did you know…
1) Spielberg tried to keep almost every part of the filmmaking process a secret. Cast and crew were in the dark about the aliens’ appearances, and refused to share the full script. Screenwriter David Koepp comments that "[Spielberg] wouldn't give [the screenplay] to anybody", rather opting to share bits and pieces of it as they became relevant. Actress Miranda Otto was even reluctant to discuss the story with her family: “In the old days people didn't get to know much about movies before they came out and nowadays there's just so much information. I think a bit of mystery is always really good. You don't want to blow all of your cards beforehand."
2) One particularly impressive scene in the film sees the Ferrier clan thrown into the water when several tripod aliens attack the ferry they were trying to use to cross the Hudson River. Shooting the scene in a massive tank, Spielberg played music through underwater speakers to set the mood. However, first he decided to play a prank on Cruise and the crew by blasting the iconic ‘der-dum, der-dum’ theme from his 1975 classic Jaws.

Martian (The War of the Worlds)
The Martians, also known as the Invaders, are the fictional race of extraterrestrials from the H.G. Wells novel The War of the Worlds. They are the main antagonists of the novel, and their efforts to exterminate the populace of England (and later the Earth) and claim the planet for themselves drive the plot and present challenges for the novel's human characters.
