Homeland Security Committee Chair Mike McCaul (R-TX) told Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace that flight MH370 had gone missing as the result of a deliberate action, likely on the part of the pilot or copilot. "This was not an accident," McCaul said. "It was an intentional, deliberate act to bring down this airplane." McCaul said the task at this point was narrowing motive. "We don't have any evidence this was terrorist related, though you can't rule that out at any time," McCaul said. "I think all the evidence is pointing toward the cockpit, toward the pilot and copilot."

House Republicans Vote To Pass Amendments To Government Funding Plan
WASHINGTON, D.C.--With Washington politics marked by showdowns, cliffs and chaos these days, it’s fair to add shutdown to the list.
The first federal government shutdown in nearly 20 years is all but certain, with a defiant and united House GOP keeping a hard line against President Barack Obama’s health care law.
The new House bill delays the entire health care law for one year and repeals part of the law’s funding.
The House also passed a separate measure to make sure the military gets paid if the government shuts down.
Senate majority leader Harry Reid called the Republican plan pointless. Before the vote, Democrats in the House urged compromise.
“A very sad day in American history is upon us. I urge Speaker Boehner to listen to voices of reason in his conference and pull together like-minded Republicans who can join with like-minded Democrats and get this done,” Rep. G.K. Butterfield of North Carolina said.
North Carolina Congressman Mark Meadows was among the Republicans pushing House leadership to adopt this strategy, targeting Obamacare:
"There are two reasons. One is that there have been 17 shutdowns in the history of our country. The longest one was 21 days. None of them had an economic impact. The other part of that is September 30th is a critical day. As you know, enrollment starts October 1. If we’re going to do something and fix this program we need to make sure we do it before it gets implemented, not afterward,” Meadows said.
House Republicans also hope to leave Democrats carrying the blame for a shutdown.
“We’re gonna put them on the record, and they can be held accountable to the people,” Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas said.
Adding fuel to Democrats’ criticism that the GOP effort is purely driven by politics.
“It’s not that the Senate hasn’t voted repeatedly as the House has – maybe not quite as many times – to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and it’s been rejected. What we need to do is govern responsibly and cooperatively,” Rep. Lloyd Dogett of Texas said.
The Senate is not expected to reconvene until Monday afternoon, just hours before the midnight deadline for passing a government funding bill.

Congress Holds Hearing On Airport Security Policies
Members of Congress on Thursday took a closer look at airport security policies in the wake of this month's shooting at Los Angeles International Airport. Washington bureau reporter Geoff Bennett filed the following report for NY1.
Four minutes. That's how long it took police to respond to the fatal shooting at the Los Angeles International Airport.
Although members of the House subcommittee praised the overall emergency response, they said that it could and should have come more quickly.
"Four minutes in a time like this is a long time," said Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas. "With 150 rounds is a very long time. It's extraordinary that more lives were not taken. It's a miracle that that didn't happen and we thank God that didn't happen on that day."
Officials blamed a communications breakdown between police and the TSA in the moments after a gunman opened fire inside LAX, killing a TSA agent and wounding several others.
Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina: Would you agree that the communication issue is one that you need to review?
John Pistole, Administrator, Transportation Security Administration: Yes.
Pistole, the head of the TSA said that at some small or rural airports, the agreed upon emergency response times can be 15 minutes or longer. The procedures are currently under review.
The committee members also pressed the TSA chief for answers on a program that teaches agents how to spot suspicious behavior.
This week, the government accountability office released a report saying the TSA spent nearly $1 billion on a program without proof that it even works.
Some lawmakers have called for a cut in funding, but the head of the TSA said that the SPOT program is a critical security layer that can detect signals that can't be picked up by metal detectors.
"So de-funding the program is not the answer," Pistole said. "I would just say, if we did that, if Congress did that, what I could envision is, there would be fewer passengers going through expedited screening, there'd increased pat-downs, there'd be longer lines, and there would be more frustration by the traveling public."
A traveling public caught in the balance between safety and convenience.

Michael Thomas McCaul, Sr. (born January 14, 1962) is the U.S. Representative for Texas's 10th congressional district, serving since 2005. He is a member of the Republican Party. The district stretches from Austin to Houston.
McCaul grew up in suburban Dallas to a fourth generation Texan family. He graduated from Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from San Antonio's Trinity University in 1984 and his Juris Doctor from St. Mary's University in 1987. McCaul also attended Harvard University, taking courses in the Kennedy School of Government.
McCaul worked as an attorney and a federal prosecutor before entering politics. He was the Chief of Counterterrorism and National Security for Texas's branch of the US Attorney's office also worked under the Department of Justice's Public Integrity Section. McCaul was appointed Deputy Attorney General in 1998 and served in this capacity until 2002.
He ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2004. He won a crowded Republican primary in the newly created 10th District. The district was thought to be so heavily Republican that no Democrat even filed, effectively handing the seat to McCaul.

Kevin Michael Costner (born January 18, 1955) is an American actor, singer, musician, producer, director, and businessman. He has won two Academy Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards and has been nominated for three BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Awards. Costner's roles include Lt. John J. Dunbar in the film Dances with Wolves, Jim Garrison in JFK, Ray Kinsella in Field of Dreams, Robin Hood in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Crash Davis in Bull Durham, Robert "Butch" Haynes in A Perfect World, Frank Farmer in The Bodyguard, Lt. Cmdr. Tom Farrell in No Way Out, and Eliot Ness in The Untouchables. Costner also founded the band Modern West, and has performed with the band since 2007.
Born in Lynwood, California, the youngest of three sons (the middle of whom died at birth). His mother, Sharon Rae (née Tedrick), was a welfare worker, and his father, William Costner, was an electrician and later utilities executive at Southern California Edison. Costner's patrilineal ancestry originates with German immigrants to North Carolina in the 1700s; he also has English and Irish ancestry, and has said that one of his ancestors had "married a Cherokee woman". Costner was raised Baptist. He attended Cabrillo Middle School and Villa Park High School. Costner was not academically inclined. Rather, he enjoyed sports, took piano lessons, wrote poetry and sang in the First Baptist Choir. He has stated that a viewing of the film How the West Was Won at the age of seven had "formed" his childhood.
