THE LEAD: Miami hasn't been very good at winning shootouts this season, winning just seven of 19 games before Wednesday when the opposition scored at least 100 points. That proved to be a big challenge against the Clippers, who came in as the highest-scoring home team in the NBA. Unfortunately for L.A., nobody likes challenges more than LeBron James. The four-time Most Valuable Player took the Heat under his wing once again and scored 10 of his 31 points in the final five minutes as the two-time defending champions held on for a 116-112 victory at Staples Center, ending L.A.'s five-game home-winning streak against Miami. THE STAT: Clippers forward Blake Griffin did his part, scoring a season-high 43 points, the fourth 40-point game of his career. TURNING POINT: The Heat weren't able to put a fork in the Clippers, despite a 14-point lead to start the fourth quarter. L.A. pulled within two thanks to a 10-0 run capped off when Griffin tipped in his own miss with just over five minutes left. James, who had checked back into the game at the start of the run, took over on the next three possessions, converting two free throws, drilling a 3-pointer and then scoring on a driving left-handed layup, pushing the lead back to six with 3:18 left. The Clippers managed to trim the deficit back to two one last time on Jamal Crawford's pull-up jumper with 1:04 remaining, but Dwyane Wade found veteran sharpshooter Ray Allen in the corner for a back-breaking 3-pointer with 42 seconds on the clock. The Heat then finished things off by shooting 4-for-6 from the line down the stretch. QUOTABLE: "When he caught it, I knew nothing good was about to happen." -- Clippers coach Doc Rivers on Ray Allen's shot HOT: The Heat started the game playing like a team eager to get a monkey off its back, taking a 36-24 lead after the opening quarter, its highest-scoring opening frame of the season. Miami made its first six baskets, shot 69.6 percent from the floor in the first quarter, 57.1 for the half and finished at 52.6. Seven players in all scored in double figures for the Heat and seven of the nine players who took at least one shot finished at 50 percent or better from the floor. NOT: The Clippers were missing their starting backcourt of Chris Paul and J.J. Redick due to injuries and were desperate for someone to step up from long range, even if it just meant opening things up a little more for Griffin in the middle. That person could have been Jared Dudley but he continues to be mired in a shooting slump that seems to be taking a toll on his confidence. Dudley missed all three of his 3-point attempts to fall to 3-for-20 from long range over the last nine games. He was part of a bench unit that combined for just five points, forcing four of the five starters for L.A. to play more than 40 minutes. GOOD MOVE: James has now scored in double figures in 542 straight games so it's not like he's one to take a night off. But James still showed early on that he was extra motivated to get a win at Staples. He made a bad pass while driving toward his basket and it was intercepted by Clippers center DeAndre Jordan, who passed the ball ahead to speedy point guard Darren Collison. It appeared Collison had clear sailing to complete the fast break, but James swooped back into the picture and swatted Collison's layup attempt from behind with one of his patented chasedown blocks. QUOTABLE II: "I just thought we had too many mistakes, like the 21 turnovers." -- Doc Rivers BAD MOVE: The Clippers have been searching for additional scoring depth as they get closer and closer to the postseason. They were hoping veteran forward Hedo Turkoglu was part of the answer, but he limped off the floor in the first half after taking a tumble and did not return. After the game, it was announced Turkoglu has a bruised knee and is day-to-day. If he's gone for any length of time, the Clippers might need to start looking elsewhere for additional bench help.
