Your children do not stand still... fidgeting with hands and feet... cannot sit still in their chairs... they run, climb... have difficulty playing... behave as if they were driven by a motor... when spoken to, seem not to listen... are distracted... cannot stay silent... talk too much! Have difficulty waiting for their turn... shout answers before the question is finished being asked... interrupt or intrude questions when communicating with others... WARNING! With only six of these behavioural expressions, someone will, probably, one day tell you that your child has ADHD - attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a genetically determined neuro-chemical abnormality. Depending on the country where you live, if you're in America, Germany, France or Italy, you will be offered, more or less straightforwardly, the solution to your problems: one tablet of methylphenidate or atomoxetine. If your life were a movie at this point, you would press "pause" on the remote controller, because the reality that you are living is more complex than people told you. The scientific community has been divided for more than 50 years on what ADHD really is. Your diagnosis will, therefore, depend exclusively on the doctor that you will meet. What is certain, is that the laboratory tests and the criteria used for the diagnosis are limited and the medication is not without consequences: the atomoxetine produces hallucinations, severe liver damage and suicidal tendencies, and the methylphenidate is an amphetamine, classified by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) in the same group of narcotics, along with heroin, morphine and cocaine. The UN talks about a health emergency and complains and warns about ADHD by saying, "The Council calls on nations to evaluate the possible overestimation of ADHD and to curb the excessive use of methylphenidate (Ritalin). In the United States, children as young as 1 year old have been diagnosed with ADHD."
