Ad Reinhardt by Victoria Taylor-Gore
My friend Randy asked me to make a video about Reinhardt...this is my humble attempt. Ad Reinhardt was an Abstract Expressionist painter that worked in New York from the 1930's to the 1960's. The passages in the video are from a poem called "The More Loving One" by WH Auden that Reinhardt copied on one of his many pages of notes on art. It is hard to appreciate the subtle color nuances in his paintings from photographs, so I hope you will see Reinhardt's work in person someday :) The part of the poem that I used in the video is: Admirer as I think I am Of stars that do not give a damn, I cannot, now I see them, say I missed one terribly all day. Were all stars to disappear or die, I should learn to look at an empty sky And feel its total darkness sublime, Though this might take me a little time. Hear WH Auden read the entire poem: www.npr.org Reinhardt claimed that his "black" or "ultimate" paintings were the "last paintings" that anyone can paint. To me the poem by WH Auden reflects the mystery of his minimal work. The music is "Edge of Love" by Mindy Smith. My website: www.victoriataylorgore.com

EXPRESIONISMO ABSTRACTO
2008 Year End Update Part II
James Kalm salutes the Kalm Report viewers with this year end medley of shows. A strange alignment has brought a pair of exhibitions that feature European Conceptualists and proto Minimalists. ZERO in New York at Sperone Westwater features the works by members of this group never seen in New York before. Initiated in the late 50s by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene this tendency became an international movement forming collaborations with artists in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland. Minimal and Conceptual art in Europe The Helga and Walther Lauffs Collection at David Zwirner presents some of the most influential artists working in this mode during its formative years. Beyond the Canon: Small Scale American Abstraction 1945 to 1965 at Robert Miller is a museum quality survey of paintings by artists who are the foundations of the New York School. With examples by Jackson Pollock, Richard Pousette-Dart, Lee Krasner, Al Held, Hans Hoffmann, Norman Lewis, Ad Reinhardt and Adolph Gottleib et. al.

Ad Reinhardt is a compelling artist for his commitment to his Puritanism of painting striped of all content except art: There is no such thing as a good painting about something. But is that true. Is not Reinhardt's Nothingness his something? Is Reinhardt's Nothingness less honest than Beckett's Nothingness which is Something itself? A cross or a circle, even in abstraction have universal significance.

J-Brooka and I had been working for some time on another concept for another video entirely, it was going to be for a song off of his solo album when last minute, two days before we were due to start shooting, everything had to switched gears. Long story short (not my strong point) there was cause for delay in production but the problem being that J-Brooka was in the military and only had a little over a week before he was leaving town to spend time with his family before shipping out to Afghanistan. It was pretty much devastating, not just because I tend to get emotionally invested in a song/concept but in this case because all of us wanted nothing more than to pull this off for him so that he could go overseas feeling like a rock star. It really didn’t look like it was going to happen. A day later J called me and said he had an idea, he had another song called “I’m A Monster” that he had done with Money, Chivas Kimber & Genesis a group collectively known as “Free Agent”. He said he just wanted something kind of in the vein of Michal Jacksons “Thriller”. Time to scramble.
Like I'm sure a lot of people in this industry do I'm always making little notes in my head of people, places and things that may come in handy one day. As soon as he told me what he was thinking and I started listening to this track for so many obvious reasons a couple local special effects makeup guys came to mind. I had stumbled on their site over a year ago but till this came along hadn't had a project that would lend itself to their talents. Enter Matt Garcia & Michael Lynn Garcia of Global Fear Enterprises (www.globalfearenterprises.com). Not sure if Matt knew just how much of a panic I was in when I contacted him but told him the basics, that since we only had a few days before we had to shoot I just wanted to use some of the characters and costumes he had already created, shoot the artists performing, swap them out with the monsters, baddabing baddaboom, music video. Thankfully he was totally down and able to shift things around to accommodate our last minute shoot. The one caveat being that he thought he could only get three actors for the costumes though I needed four. I told him that wouldn’t be a problem, I’d find someone. A phone call later my good friend Scott Ward, owner of Strange Brew (shameless plug www.strangebrewaustin.com) agreed to be the werewolf … and bring coffee. If ya know me that’s a big frikkin bonus. As a side note it would have been great if we could have just had the guys in the group in the costumes but as you may suspect getting someone into that and made up takes time that we didn’t have the luxury of. The only way we would be able to pull off anything like this would be to have their doppelganger in the waiting watching the artists perform and do their best to mimic what they did.
I had a few places that I thought might work for the ambiance I was looking for but wasn’t 100% that they were gritty enough. Doing what any good director/producer would do when you need something last minute I posted an ad on Craigslist while putting a backup plan into place. With one location locked while still hoping for another I went to work on finding girls, gotta have girls! Carly Bell had been working on doing the choreography for the previous concept and was totally on-board with switching gears and being in this one. Some may recognize her from the “Larissa Ness – Thoughts of You” music video I had done, she did all the amazing choreography for that one as well (http://vimeo.com/7700275). Next to agree with little or no notice was Stephanie Schechter, she had been one of the stand out models in the “Threads of Hope Fashion Event” and was thrilled to have her join in(http://vimeo.com/11394371). Last, and to be completely cliché, defiantly not least was Kelsea Fontes. Though I had never met her in person we had become friends on Facebook through friends of friends and every one of her pics were just stunning. There was a fourth girl (name withheld!) was supposed to be there but more about that later.
Two days before the shoot I got a tip on another location from Rob Surrette (robsurettemusic.com) for the Armadillo Hall in Taylor Texas (www.armadillohall.com). From the pics I could dig up it was amazing but was somewhat leery that it wasn’t in Austin. Extra miles tend to dishearten the kindness of those involved on productions and always seem to increase the odds that someone’s not going to make it. With that in mind I was pensive about changing everything and switching locations. The next day I was having second thoughts while trying to get everything lined up and decided to do some Google maps comparing. Much to my surprise the location I had already locked, though technically in Austin was exactly the same drive time, 45 minutes. Another p

(Somewhere) Beyond The Sea! - Bobby Darin, Mantovani & Percy Faith Orchestras!!!
More HD Music Videos: ILoveProfHowdy.Com
"Beyond the Sea" is a 1946 contemporary pop song with music taken from the song "La Mer" by Charles Trenet and lyrics by Jack Lawrence.
Trenet had composed "La Mer" (which means "The Sea") with French lyrics totally different and unrelated to the English language version that Lawrence composed. Trenet's French version was an homage and ode to the changing moods of the sea, while Lawrence, by just adding one word "Beyond" to the title, gave him the start whereby he made the song into one of a lover pining for a lost love.
It has been recorded by many artists, including Benny Goodman, Mantovani, Roger Williams and Gisele MacKenzie, but Bobby Darin's version released in 1959 is the best known by many, reaching #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song reached the top 40 twice prior to the Darin version (Goodman-1948, Williams-1955).
Darin's recording has been used in many films, TV shows and video games, including Apollo 13, Austin Powers in Goldmember, Diner, Goodfellas, Lost, Black Rain, The X-Files, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Finding Nemo and BioShock. The song was also played in a 2005 commercial for Carnival Cruise Lines. A portion of Bobby Darin's recording was played during the splashdown and post-recovery of Alan Shepard's Freedom 7 in the first episode of the 1998 HBO miniseries, From the Earth to the Moon.
Kevin Spacey sang the song in the movie Beyond the Sea, a biopic about Bobby Darin, in a "fantasy" sequence leading up to his marriage to Sandra Dee. Similarly, on the television series American Dreams, Duncan Sheik performed the song while playing the role of Bobby Darin.
American R&B; singer George Benson recorded a version of the song under the title "Beyond The Sea (La Mer)", which entered the UK Singles Chart on 20 April 1985. It reached a peak position of number 60, and remained in the chart for 3 weeks.
Another recording of the song released in 1965 as the B-side of American folk-rock band We Five's #1-hit "You Were On My Mind" is also well-known. Robbie Williams covered the song on the Finding Nemo soundtrack. The Irish musical group Celtic Woman covered this song for their two albums, A New Journey and The Greatest Journey Essential Collection, and in each album, Chloë Agnew and Hayley Westenra sing a solo in the first verse. It was also remixed by Moby and Oscar The Punk on the BioShock EP Game soundtrack. In 1998, it was released in a swing-tempo cover by Royal Crown Revue on the Mugsy's Move album. In the movie 'A Life Less Ordinary, it was sung by Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz. It bookends Barry Manilow's 2006 release The Greatest Songs of the Fifties. Westlife did a cover of the song as a digital download release in UK in 2004.

Brian Dickerson, Excavation
Philadelphia painter Brian Dickerson's new exhibition at the Kouros Gallery in New York reveals an artist of rare intelligence and sensitivity. These deeply mysterious and beautiful painted assemblages share an affinity with artifacts from an ancient past. There is a deep emotional undertone to these works and I asked about the experiences in his life that led Dickerson to create them.
