1972 ALCS Game 1 - A's 3 Tigers 2
Here are the clips from Game 1, played in Oakland on 7 October 1972. This was the first MLB postseason game I ever attended, and it was a great one. Catfish Hunter pitched into the 9th, and the Tigers had men on 1st and 3rd with nobody out only to have Rollie Fingers come in and strand the runners. Mickey Lolich pitched into the 11th and was the hard-luck loser (see how close the Tigers came to

1972 World Series Game 5 Reds @ A's part 1 of 2
Up three games to one and with ace Catfish Hunter on the mound, the A's looked to close out Cincinnati. But the Reds got a home run by Pete Rose to lead off the game and Rose also drove in the game-winner in the ninth. The dramatic game ended when Joe Morgan threw out the potential game-tying run at the plate as the Reds staved off elimination.

A repeat of the pitching matchup from Game 1 (Hunter vs. Lolich), this one really hurt. Jon Matlack who came off of 3 days rest, matched up with Ken Holtzman, who was more rested after coming back from his early shower in Game 4. The third inning proved to be the difference, as Holtzman lined a one-out double off Matlack to left, his second of the Series after not batting at all during the season. Matlack then surrendered a two run opposite-field homer to Bert Campaneris (Oakland's first home run of the series), and then another two run blast to Reggie Jackson later in the inning, giving the A's a 4–0 lead and Holtzman all the runs he needed. The Mets came back with two runs after Oakland increased their lead to 5–0 in the fifth inning, but it was not enough. Campaneris snagged a Wayne Garrett pop fly to end the series; and Jackson was named the World Series MVP.[10]
In the third inning, Gene Tenace walked for the eleventh time tying the Series record set by Babe Ruth of the Yankees in 1926. In the seventh inning, Wayne Garrett struck out for the eleventh time tying the Series record set by Eddie Mathews of the Milwaukee Braves in 1958. Darold Knowles got the save and became the only pitcher ever to appear in all seven games of a seven-game World Series.

With two outs in the eighth and Dave Concepción on second, A's manager Dick Williams brought in left-hander Vida Blue to face left-handed hitters Joe Morgan and Bobby Tolan. Williams left Blue in the game to pitch to powerful right-handed hitting Johnny Bench, but Bench flied out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth with one out, the A's strung together four straight hits to score two runs. Pinch hitter Gonzalo Marquez singled, Tenace followed with a single, Don Mincher followed with another pinch-hit single scoring pinch-runner Allan Lewis to tie the game before a third pinch-hitter, Angel Mangual, singled off Clay Carroll to score Tenace with the game-winner to put Oakland up three games to one. It was the first time that a team collected three pinch hits in the same World Series inning.

Don Sutton pitched superbly, shutting out the A's on four hits through eight innings. The Dodgers scored first in the second off Vida Blue when Ron Cey walked, Bill Russell singled, and Steve Yeager singled home Cey. Joe Ferguson slammed a two-run homer off Blue in the sixth to make it 3–0.
In the ninth, the A's finally got on the board when Sal Bando led off with being hit by a pitch, Reggie Jackson followed with a double, and Joe Rudi singled both runners home. Mike Marshall then relieved Sutton and struck out Gene Tenace. Herb Washington was sent in to pinch-run for Rudi, and Marshall picked him off. Herb Washington was the only "designated runner" to appear in a World Series.

A repeat of the pitching matchup from Game 1 (Hunter vs. Lolich), this one really hurt. After the A's scored 2 in the top of the 10th and were 3 outs away from the pennant, the Tigers scored 3 in the bottom half and forced a decisive game 5......and the A's never got an out! The A's would routinely pinch-hit for their second baseman, and when Dick Green got hurt they put Gene Tenace (who would be a hero in 2 weeks time) there, to disastrous effect. A classic game to be sure.

Richard Hirschfeld Williams (born May 7, 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri) is a former left fielder, third baseman, manager, coach and front office consultant in Major League Baseball. Known especially as a hard-driving, sharp-tongued manager from 1967-69 and 1971-88, he led teams to three American League pennants, one National League pennant, and two World Series triumphs. He is one of seven managers to win pennants in both major leagues, and joined Bill McKechnie in becoming only the second manager to lead three franchises to the Series. He remains the only manager in history to lead four teams to seasons of 90 or more wins. On December 3, 2007 Williams was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. He was formally inducted on July 27, 2008.
After spending 1970 as the third base coach of the Montreal Expos, Williams returned to the managerial ranks the next year as boss of the Oakland Athletics, owned by Charlie Finley. The iconoclastic Finley had signed some of the finest talent in baseball -- including Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Sal Bando, Bert Campaneris, Rollie Fingers and Joe Rudi -- but his players hated him for his penny-pinching and constant meddling in the team's affairs. During his first decade as the Athletics' owner, 1961-1970, Finley had changed managers a total of ten times.
Inheriting a second-place team from predecessor John McNamara, Williams promptly directed the A's to their first AL West title in 1971 behind another brilliant young player, pitcher Vida Blue. Despite being humbled in the ALCS by the defending World Champion Orioles, Finley brought Williams back for 1972, when the "Oakland Dynasty" began. Off the field, the A's players brawled with each other and defied baseball's tonsorial code. Because long hair, mustaches and beards were now the rage in the "civilian" world, Finley decided on a mid-season promotion encouraging his men to wear their hair long and grow facial hair. Fingers adopted his trademark handlebar mustache (which he still has to this day); Williams himself grew a mustache.
Of course, talent, not hairstyle, truly defined the Oakland Dynasty of the early 1970s. The 1972 A's won their division by 5½ games over the White Sox and led the league in home runs, shutouts and saves. They defeated the Tigers in a bitterly fought ALCS, and found themselves facing the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series. Cincinnati's powerful Big Red Machine was favored to win, but the home run heroics of Oakland catcher Gene Tenace and the managerial maneuvering of Williams resulted in a seven-game World Series victory for the A's, their first championship since 1930, when they played in Philadelphia.
In 1973, with Williams back for an unprecedented (for the Finley era) third straight campaign, the A's again coasted to a division title, then defeated Baltimore in the ALCS and the NL champion New York Mets in the World Series -- each hard-fought series going the limit. With their World Series win, Oakland became baseball's first repeat champion since the 1961-62 New York Yankees. But Williams had a surprise for Finley. Tired of his owner's meddling, and upset by Finley's public humiliation of second baseman Mike Andrews for his fielding miscues during the World Series, Williams resigned. George Steinbrenner, then finishing his first season as owner of the Yankees, immediately signed Williams as his manager. However, Finley protested that Williams owed Oakland the final year of his contract and could not manage anywhere else, and so Steinbrenner hired Bill Virdon instead.

PROFILES host Mickey Burns interviews Major League Baseball legend Rusty Staub in this 10 minute episode teaser. After a prolific 23 year career, Staub remains as the only player ever to appear in 500 games with four different teams and collect 500 hits for each of those four teams. Along his journey, he also became one of the most popular players in the major league.
Staub became a New York Met in 1972. Three years later he would set a Mets record with 105 runs batted in- the first Met ever to surpass 100 RBI's.
In his latest book "Few and Chosen: Defining Mets Greatness Across the Eras", Staub picks the five best Mets players at every position in the history of the franchise.
