Directed by Laura Scrivano :: Concept by Laura Scrivano & Zindzi Okenyo The writing of this song started in a very personal and emotional place for me, in fact a lot of the reason why I started writing music at all was because it felt like pure necessity. A while ago when I was dabbling in prose and poetry a friend of mine asked me once why do you write at all? After a really long pause I answered, because I have to. His response? That was the right answer. I think art is a wonderful thing, it can really save. It's not the tangible immediacy of a doctor saving a life in an operating theatre but it cures in a different, subconscious way. When my brother gave me 'Who is Jill Scott' for my fifteenth birthday, reading Mrs Dalloway in year twelve English class or when my best friend Ben introduced me to Anais Nin all seemed at the time just exciting moments of discovery. Now when I think of all the moments of personal revelation through paintings, literature, music, theatre and film I realise these moments have shaped a significant part of who I am. My 'real' job is as an actor (nothing ever feels like work!) and the difference between being in a play on stage or working on screen versus performing for an audience at a gig is huge. Music is so immediate and I love the in the moment response that happens. For me this song is about trying to save someone and realising the only option is to save yourself. It's about vulnerability and how terribly beautiful it is. On the flip side, I don't expect anyone else to be so damn dramatic about it and that is what I find so funny and great about art and expression. During the recent Jinja Safari tour I was on it was so great experiencing the audiences response, they were mostly just faces of joy! It's great that something that started in a dark place can be turned into something positive for someone else. And for me too. I'm loving this ride. So I hope you enjoy my first offering, Broken Chest, it's here for you to take it however you want.
