Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM; Chinese: 法鼓山; pinyin: Fǎgǔ Shān; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Hoat-kó͘-soaⁿ) is an international Buddhist spiritual, cultural, and educational foundation founded by late Chan Master Sheng-yen. The international headquarters of this organization is located at Jinshan District, New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Dharma Drum Mountain is one of the most influential Buddhist organizations in Chinese Buddhism. In Taiwan, it is considered one of the "Four Heavenly Kings" or four major Buddhist temples of Taiwanese Buddhism, along with Tzu Chi, Fo Guang Shan, and Chung Tai Shan. Its impact on Buddhist circles and both Eastern and Western societies stems from the vision, charisma, and life experience of Sheng-yen.
Long before the establishment of the Jinshan headquarters, the development of Dharma Drum originated in the Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Culture (CHIBC) and Nung Chan. Both were founded by Dongchu, a prominent Chan monk back in Mainland China and later in Taiwan, who was also disciple of renowned modernist monk, Grand Master Taixu.
Dharma ([dʱəɾmə]; Sanskrit: धर्म dharma, listen ; Pali: धम्म dhamma) is a key concept with multiple meanings in the Indian religions Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. There is no single word translation for dharma in western languages.
In Hinduism, dharma signifies behaviours that are considered to be in accord with rta, the order that makes life and universe possible, and includes duties, rights, laws, conduct, virtues and ‘‘right way of living’’. In Buddhism dharma means "cosmic law and order", but is also applied to the teachings of the Buddha. In Buddhist philosophy, dhamma/dharma is also the term for "phenomena".Dharma in Jainism refers to the teachings of tirthankara (Jina) and the body of doctrine pertaining to the purification and moral transformation of human beings. For Sikhs, the word dharm means the "path of righteousness".
The Classical Sanskrit noun dharma is a derivation from the root dhṛ, which has a meaning of "to hold, maintain, keep". The word "dharma" was already in use in the historical Vedic religion, and its meaning and conceptual scope has evolved over several millennia. The antonym of dharma is adharma.
The drum is a member of the percussion group of musical instruments. In the Hornbostel-Sachs classification system, it is a membranophone. Drums consist of at least one membrane, called a drumhead or drum skin, that is stretched over a shell and struck, either directly with the player's hands, or with a drum stick, to produce sound. There is usually a resonance head on the underside of the drum, typically tuned to a slightly lower pitch than the top drumhead. Other techniques have been used to cause drums to make sound, such as the thumb roll. Drums are the world's oldest and most ubiquitous musical instruments, and the basic design has remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years.
Drums may be played individually, with the player using a single drum, and some drums such as the djembe are almost always played in this way. Others are normally played in a set of two or more, all played by the one player, such as bongo drums and timpani. A number of different drums together with cymbals form the basic modern drum kit.
A mountain is a large landform that stretches above the surrounding land in a limited area, usually in the form of a peak. A mountain is generally steeper than a hill. Mountains are formed through tectonic forces or volcanism. These forces can locally raise the surface of the earth. Mountains erode slowly through the action of rivers, weather conditions, and glaciers. A few mountains are isolated summits, but most occur in huge mountain ranges.
High elevations on mountains produce colder climates than at sea level. These colder climates strongly affect the ecosystems of mountains: different elevations have different plants and animals. Because of the less hospitable terrain and climate, mountains tend to be used less for agriculture and more for resource extraction and recreation, such as mountain climbing.
The highest mountain on Earth is Mount Everest in the Himalayas of Asia, whose summit is 8,850 m (29,035 ft) above mean sea level. The highest known mountain on any planet in the Solar System is Olympus Mons on Mars at 21,171 m (69,459 ft).
Sheng Yen (聖嚴; Pinyin: Shèngyán, birth name Zhang Baokang, 張保康) (December 4, 1930 – February 3, 2009) was a Chinese Buddhist monk, a religious scholar, and one of the mainstream teachers of Chan Buddhism. He was a 57th generational dharma heir of Linji Yixuan in the Linji school (Japanese: Rinzai) and a third-generation dharma heir of Hsu Yun. In the Caodong (Japanese: Sōtō) lineage, Sheng Yen was a 52nd-generation Dharma heir of Dongshan Liangjie (807-869), and a direct Dharma heir of Dongchu (1908–1977).
Sheng Yen was the founder of the Dharma Drum Mountain, a Buddhist organization based in Taiwan. During his time in Taiwan, Sheng Yen was well known as one of the progressive Buddhist teachers who sought to teach Buddhism in a modern and Western-influenced world. In Taiwan, he was one of four prominent modern Buddhist masters, along with Hsing Yun, Cheng Yen and Wei Chueh. In 2000 he was one of the keynote speakers in the Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders held in the United Nations.

To make environmental protection and ecological balance a reality Master Sheng Yen established a basic policy for the construction of the Dharma Drum Mountain complex based on the idea of Protecting the Spiritual Environment. During the construction process, the first priority was preserving the original habitat by transplanting trees and through dredging work, as well as using building materials, energy-efficient systems, and rainwater recycling systems, as an effort for sustainable use of resources, enabling native creatures to thrive in harmony and flourish in safety.

2016 心.光明遠大 法鼓山大事記 In 2016, Dharma Drum Mountain has achieved a great deal in its Three-fold Education efforts. The Liang Emperor’s Repentance Rite held at Nung Chan Monastery celebrated its 20th anniversary, while the Great Compassion Liberation Rite of Water and Land has entered its 10th year. The Master Sheng Yen’s Chronicle, compiled and edited for over a decade, was finally published, while the 68-year-old Humanity Magazine has released its 400th issue. Meanwhile, the Great Vow Bridge and the School History Hall of the Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts were inaugurated, and the Lanyang Practice Center, after nine years of planning and construction, completed. These events witnessed our endeavor to help purify human minds in society and build a pure land on earth.
Short introduction to Dharma Drum made for my Chinese Class, as we will be visiting the monastery later this year.
In 2014, Dharma Drum Mountain has made significant advances in its Three-fold Education endeavor: the Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts was established; the Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Association was granted consultative status by the UN; and the abbot president Ven.
