The UFC always looks to set up a big card annually during Super Bowl weekend and next year will be no different. It was announced on Fuel TV's 'UFC Tonight' that featherweight champion Jose Aldo would defend the title against former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.
Aldo and Edgar were set to face off at UFC 153 in Brazil, but an injury to Aldo forced the fight to be pulled from the card. Aldo was injured in a motorcycle accident and was unable to be recover in time to make the card.
The fight between Edgar and Aldo will headline the event which is scheduled to take place February 2nd. The location of the event has not been officially announced but it will happen in Las Vegas.
Frankie Edgar became the lightweight champion by defeating B.J. Penn who was at the time considered one of the greatest lightweight fighters in MMA history. Edgar then defeated Penn in a rematch to solidify his somewhat disputed first victory over Penn. Edgar then went on to lose the title to Ben Henderson and then lose in the subsequent rematch before making the decision to move to featherweight when he was offered a title fight with Ado.
Jose Aldo is a top five pound for pound fighter in the world and has dominated the featherweight division in the WEC and the UFC. Aldo has defended the UFC featherweight title three times and is on a fourteen fight win streak.
The event will officially be UFC 156.
