Ethan "Cane" Ashby (born Ethan Atkinson) is a fictional character in the American soap opera The Young and the Restless. Daniel Goddard has portrayed the character since his January 12, 2007 debut. The actor was fired in 2011 and rehired that same year after viewers campaigned for his return.
Former head writer and executive producer Lynn Marie Latham created Cane in a 2007 storyline establishing him as the son of legacy characters, Jill Foster and Phillip Chancellor II. Maria Arena Bell later rewrote his backstory in 2009 and created a new family around him, casting soap opera veterans Tristan Rogers and Genie Francis to portray the characters parents.
Soon after debuting, Cane became a popular leading man, praised by fans and critics. The character's romance with Lily Winters also gained a large following.
In 2011, Goddard was fired from the series and the character of Cane was killed off in the February 2 episode. There were rumors that Maria Arena Bell got rid of the character because he was created by her predecessor, Latham. The show denied this. As part of the campaign, a group of viewers paid for a plane to fly over CBS Studios with the message, "Y&R; Fans Want Daniel Goddard As Cane Ashby". The character's initial story positioned him as the love interest of Adrienne Frantz's Amber Moore and the son of Jill Foster Abbott and Phillip Chancellor II, Phillip Chancellor II. In 2007, former head writer Lynn Marie Latham rewrote the birth of the character by establishing that Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper), Jill's enemy and Phillip II's wife, switched their child with another, hours after his birth. The character was brought back to the show as an adult named Cane Ashby.
Cane debuts as an Australian in search of his birth mother with no knowledge of his true paternity. During that time, Goddard did not want to know the real motives of his character because he did not want that to influence his performance. After the reveal that Jill is Cane's mother came to light, his views changed. "Now, I welcome the information because it adds more color to my portrayal," he said. The initial lack of information made playing Cane difficult since there was an amount of ambiguity over whether he was a good, bad, or in between character. The ambiguity deepened when Goddard read the script revealing that the DNA test performed for Jill and Cane came back negative. "I had never gone to Lynn to ask what's going on," Goddard said. "But I went to her then and said, 'I can play anything I need to, but just answer this one question- am I really Jill's son?' And she said, 'Yes, you are.'" Goddard said he felt the phone call was resolved within the story when Cane sent money to his uncle as part of taking care of him.
The writers detailed Cane as a smart, loyal, and moral survivalist with an edge. They showed that edge during the character's reaction to Amber's betrayal. Viewers felt the character lost some of his edginess when paired with her. "I can say, as an actor, that Cane has lost a certain amount of edge, a certain amount of his dynamic," Goddard said. "But at the same time, it's been replaced with a level of compassion, understanding, tolerance, romance, and love...all the things that daytime is really about at its core." The storylines designed for them included the controversy with the gap in the character's ages, a miscarriage, and a quadrangle with Chloe Mitchell and Billy Abbott. Within the quadrangle story arc, Chloe tricks Cane into thinking they conceived a child together. To make the story work, the writers scripted Cane as less intelligent, a strategy they used previously with the Amber storyline. To keep the character from looking bad, Goddard said he made acting choices to justify Cane's actions. Despite the lessening of the character's intelligence, Goddard said he liked the story because of the originality of the plot. Love triangles and questioned paternity happen regularly in soap operas, but he felt that head writer Maria Arena Bell managed to make those conventions fresh and new.
In 2008, Bell took over as head writer of The Young and the Restless. A storyline she readdressed was the phone call Cane received from Langley. In her revised version of the story, Langley is really Phillip Chancellor III, portrayed by Thom Bierdz. The show kept secrecy around the twist by sneaking Bierdz in to shoot scenes and asked that he not tell anyone of his return.
Cane and Amber get used to being married, and eventually move onto the Chancellor estate. Kay also offers an executive position to Cane in the construction division of Chancellor Industries, which he accepts.
Later, Cane begins to be suspicious concerning his marriage to Amber. He realizes that his signature on the wedding certificate does not look like his own, though Amber claims it is because of how drunk he was that night. After contacting Amber's former mother-in-law Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang) and asking questions about her history with Amber, he eventually realizes the truth, that the marriage is invalid. Cane wants nothing to do with Amber and claims that she only ever wanted him for the Chancellor money. Before asking her to sign the papers invalidating their marriage, Cane has sex with Amber and then rejects her, hoping to make her feel his pain. Amber, meanwhile, appears to have actually fallen in love with Cane during the marriage, and is devastated at his rejection.
In September 2007, Cane shares a kiss with the recently-divorced Lily Winters (Christel Khalil), and also begins a flirtation with A.D.A. Heather Stevens (Vail Bloom). Cane and Heather mutually decide to be just friends, citing no chemistry as the reason. Cane does feel the chemistry with Lily and wants to romantically pursue her. When he finds out how much younger than he was she is, he decides against that. The two continue to be drawn to each other until they decide to not let age be an issue for them. Cane and Lily start dating, despite Neil's (Lily's father) disapproval. Cane plans to move into a condo when he finds out that Lily is planning to move out as well. Cane wants to ask Lily to move in with him but he's not sure about Neil's approval. During this time, Lily becomes pregnant with Cane's child, but miscarries early on. Cane and Lily continue to see each other, and they each profess their love for one another on several occasions. They are in a committed relationship and start living together in the house Cane bought for them. In August 2008 Cane proposes to Lily by giving her a fortune cookie with a ring inside. Lily accepts.
Cane spends an evening drinking with an old friend from Australia, and ends up getting drunk and passing out in Chloe's car. Chloe takes advantage of the situation by tricking Cane into believing they had sex. Even though Chloe is pregnant before pulling her scheme, a recent DNA test shows that Cane can not be excluded as the father of Chloe Mitchell's child, much to her enjoyment and Cane and Lily's horror. Upon this revelation Lily moves out of the house.
In early October Cane meets his half-brother Billy who has returns to Genoa City and will be working at Jabot, while keeping contact with House of Kim via satellite. Since Cane might be the father of Chloe's baby, Lily urges Cane to marry Chloe to be there for his child. In early September it is revealed that Chloe has been lying about her identity all along. Her real name is Kate Valentine, and she is in fact the daughter of Katherine Chancellor's longtime maid Esther Valentine. This enrages Cane who realizes Chloe has been lying to him since the start of the whole fiasco. Jill urges him to consider getting a good lawyer with the ultimate goal of getting an annulment.
Cane begins to grow closer to Chloe over the prospect of them having the baby. After a fight between Chloe and Lily in which Chloe falls from a ladder, he makes it clear to Lily that Chloe and the baby are his first priority. Lily agrees that that is where his priorities should be and tells both Cane and Chloe she will keep her distance. While Chloe is in the hospital because of the fall from the ladder, Billy finds out he is the father of her baby, not Cane. He decides to let Cane raise his baby because he does not think he is father material. Lily is now intrigued by a mystery man online by the name of Sonny who just happens to be Billy.
The mystery man turns out to be Billy, Cane's younger brother. Billy also later takes over Jabot in a coup ran by Jack Abbot and ousts Cane out. Lily falls for Billy and they have an affair. Billy questions Chloe about the paternity of the baby and he calculates that the baby is his from the timing of their first meeting. However, he keeps it a secret but discusses it with Jack. He wants Lily and decides to forget it and let Cane raise the child since he's the better man. Cane and Chloe become more of a family discussing the nursery however, Cane isn't aware that Chloe is fantasizing about Billy and their baby on a regular basis.
Cane discovers that Lily and Billy have already been intimate and their on their way to a Valentine's Day rendezvous in the mountains. He's upset and starts reminiscing over their love affair. He starts to panic and rushes to the Cabin to stop them and tell Lily that he loves her and he wants a life with her. Chloe arrives at the cabin just as Billy tells Lily that the baby is his. She goes into labor and they help her deliver the baby. Cane arrives and professes his love for Lily just as the baby is born. She is named "Cordelia Katherine Valentine Ashby". Cane plans to stay in the family "he" created with Chloe despite his love for Lily. Lily pushes Billy and Chloe to tell Cane the truth. Chloe eventually does, but Cane decides to fight for custody of the baby he claims as his own, threatening both Chloe and Billy as to their parental rights and qualifications. Cane has asked Lily to marry him and she accepted yet he still intends to fight Billy for paternal rights to Delia.
At Lily's urging, Cane decides to drop the paternity suit. He declares his love for Lily again, and they marry. Following the wedding, Cane recalls his telephone conversation years earlier with a man named "Langley" regarding their joint plan to con Jill and Katherine. The man bears a startling resemblance to the supposedly deceased Phillip Chancellor III (Thom Bierdz). On June 10, 2009, it is revealed that "Langley" is indeed Phillip, and that he is still very much alive (unknown to everyone except Cane).
Nina Webster Chancellor (who was Phillip's wife at the time of his supposed death) begins background research on Cane, as part of her efforts to adapt Katherine's memoir into a screenplay. Her suspicions about Cane continue to grow, and she eventually orders the exhumation of Phillip's body for genetic testing. When it is discovered that Phillip's casket is empty (and, in fact, never contained a corpse at all), Nina demands that Cane submit to DNA testing to verify his status as Jill's biological son. Upon learning of Nina's demand, Cane retrieves a vial of blood marked "Langley" from a carousel of vials he has kept in a hidden freezer for use in DNA testing. On July 2, 2009, Paul reveals to Nina that the blood given for the test to confirm Cane's identity had blood cells which had burst, meaning it had been at one time frozen. When confronted, Cane reveals that he is not actually Phillip Chancellor III. Everyone is furious, except for Katherine who simply wants to know why he had tricked them all. When asked why he did it, the real Phillip appears before Cane can answer the question.Lily and Cane break up after Lily finds out he lied about being Jill Abbott's son and pretended to believe he fathered Chloe's baby in order to continue with the ruse. Lily is later diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her uterus is taken out during a surgery to remove the cancer, but the doctor is able to harvest two of her eggs. Lily reunites with Cane while continuing with cancer treatment. They decide to continue their plan in starting a family and pursue surrogacy options. Mackenzie Browning (Clementine Ford) agrees to act as their surrogate and becomes pregnant with Lily and Cane's twins. Soon after, Cane gets arrested by an immigration officer who plans to deport him. Cane hopes something happens that will prevent that.
Despite all of that, Cane is there for the birth of his and Lily's twins, son Charlie and daughter Matilda, who are born on June 25, 2010. He also remains determined to helping Lily overcome her cancer so they can both be there for each other and their children for a long time to come. Cane is happy when Traci Abbott Connolly, Colleen Carlton's mother, agrees to be the twins' godmother. Cane is a rock for Lily as she overcomes cancer. Soon they are living a happy life with the twins.
Weeks into Lily's remission, Cane begins to be blackmailed by the crime family he turned in while in Australia. Cane embezzles money from Tucker McCall's company with the reluctant assistance of Sofia Dupre, Malcolm Winter's fiancée. In addition, Cane's birth father, Colin Atkinson comes to town to help Blake, the leading person blackmailing him. Soon Colin, without telling anyone that he is Cane's father, begins romancing Jill Fenmore, and despite Jill and Cane's lack of a blood or legal relationship, he wants Colin to have nothing to do with Jill. Quickly Colin and Jill become engaged and Tucker discovers the embezzlement and fires both Cane and Sofia. Lily confronts Cane about what has been going on recently and he comes clean to Lily, except for mentioning the truth about Colin being his father. He tries to convince her and the kids to skip town with him, but Lily adamantly refuses, saying that Cane needs to own up to his problems and he is then kicked out.
The evening that Jill and Colin are to be married, Cane is shot by Blake in the chest after they engage in a fight on the steps of the church. Colin originally ordered Blake to make sure Cane doesn't interfere with the wedding. Blake falls down the stairs and breaks his own neck. Cane is alive for a few moments and then is pronounced dead by a paramedic with Jill, Colin, and Lily all crying over his body.
Since Cane's death, Colin and Jill's marriage seems to be going on fine and Colin admits that Cane's sister Samantha was also shot. Jill tells Colin that he has been a great help to her during these difficult times. Colin has also been comforting Lily. Interesting, Lily has begun involved a number of mysterious events which seem to involve Cane. For example, after her ex-husband, Daniel Romalotti Jr. visits and Lily kisses him goodbye, Lily gets a text message suggesting that it is too soon for Lily to be kissing other men. Lily finds a message written on the condensation of her window. A number of these moments have led Lily to believe in an afterlife in which Cane is communicating something to her. Olivia Winters, Neil Winters, and Daniel, have all suggested several times that Lily should visit a psychiatrist. Lily reluctantly agrees. However, soon Lily sees Cane again, but this time after he vanishes there are actual footprints left in the ground. She sees him increasingly and on May 18, 2011, her twin babies' eyes follow Cane in the room. She begins to realize that Cane might not be a figment of her imagination. On May 23, 2011, it is revealed that the character is not actually Cane, but Cane's identical twin brother, Caleb, and is plotting to help his father, Colin, take Lily and Cane's babies away from Lily (who is completely unaware of Caleb and Colin's plan) and take them to Australia to raise them as Atkinsons. However, Caleb and Colin's plan seems to be going in the wrong direction as Lily ends up admitting to Neil that she is losing her mind and she admits herself to a psych hospital. Also, Caleb's mother and Colin's ex-wife Genevieve Atkinson comes to Genoa City to help with Caleb's plans. However, it appears that Caleb is actually against his father's plans as he confides to his mother. It is later revealed that Caleb is actually the real Cane. Back in February, Caleb Atkinson came to Genoa City early to help Colin. The night Cane was shot, it was actually Caleb who died. Cane was now alive and well and pretending to be Caleb, all the while trying to protect Lily and the twins from Colin. On July 7 2011 Cane sees Lily's ex Daniel Romalotti kiss her at Jimmy's.

Lily Winters (formerly Romalotti and Ashby) is a fictional character from the American CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless. Starting off as a rebellious yet naive teenager, the character became one of the series' popular heroines. Stories centered around Lily included the mystery of her paternity and social issue storylines. The character also made up one half of two popular pairings, the first a young love story with Daniel Romalotti and the other, a mature relationship with Cane Ashby. Lily and Daniel were referred to by the portmanteaus "Dily" (for Daniel and Lily) and "Daily" (for Daniel and Lily), while Lily and Cane were known as "Lane" (for Lily and Cane) on Internet message boards and in the press.
Christel Khalil portrayed the character from August 2002 to September 2, 2005, when the actress decided to pursue a career in movies. Her departure forced the writers to change her storyline, while they looked for a recast. Several months later, Davetta Sherwood took the role. The actress played the role in 2006 before being replaced by Khalil.
Khalil received Daytime Emmy nominations for the role in 2004, 2006, and 2010. She also won an NAACP Award for the part in 2008. During her portrayal of Lily, Khalil gained popularity among viewers.
After leaving The Young and the Restless, Khalil had multiple talks with representatives from the series about possibly stepping back into the role. Former executive producer and head writer Lynn Marie Latham said she was happy with the casting change because she was impressed by Khalil's work. The next year, Khalil won the award and then gained another nomination in 2009. She earned a third Emmy nomination for Outstanding Younger Actress in 2010 for the episode in which Lily finds out she has cancer.
Khalil's departure from the series halted the story until Sherwood took over the role. Though Lily was always written and portrayed as feisty, Sherwood brought an added "fire" to the part. "I was cast, I was told, because of my fire, but I was supposed to use my fire only when necessary," she said. Lily's "a lot like her mother. It makes sense. She spent a lot of time with her mother growing up and she's seen how her mother reacts to certain situations when there is a problem or a dilemma."
In 2006, The Young and the Restless's former head writer and executive producer Jack Smith decided to resolve the story of Lily's true paternity by revealing that Malcolm, not Neil, fathered Lily. Lily's next storyline centered on a controversial romance with Cane and a career in modeling. The relationship added further growth to Lily's character. "She's been in kind of an immature relationship," Khalil said. "I think that being with a real man does make Lily grow up and start thinking about her life and situation in a different way. I think it will change Lily for the better." Stumbling blocks written into the relationship were the disapproval from Lily's family, a miscarriage, and interlopers, Chloe Mitchell and Billy Abbott.
In a 2009 interview with Soap Opera Digest, Khalil expressed her happiness about the evolution of her character. "I like that she's getting more adult storylines, that she's had to deal with things like losing a baby or breaking off her engagement [to Cane]," she said. The magazine remarked that Khalil's role on the series had transitioned from a "teen star" into a "leading lady." Khalil filmed a public service announcement with CBS Cares about ovarian cancer and those affected by the disease.
In 2004, Lily becomes the victim of the 25-year-old online predator Kevin Fisher (Greg Rikaart), who statutorily rapes her and infects her with chlamydia, an STD. He gets away with the crime because of lack of evidence. Lily eventually forgives him when he rescues her from a man who drugs and attempts to rape her that same year. Unbeknownst to Lily, the drugging is a setup orchestrated by Daniel Romalotti (Michael Graziadei) and Kevin in an attempt to make Kevin look like a hero.
In 2005, Lily begins a relationship with Daniel. Daniel and Lily storylines include a Romeo and Juliet inspired on the run story and teenage marriage.
Lily finds out that her biological father is not Neil, but rather Neil's brother Malcolm Winters (Shemar Moore). As the truth comes out, Lily's relationship with her mother becomes strained. They reconcile before Dru is presumed dead after falling off a cliff along with Sharon Newman (Sharon Case), during an argument with Daniel's mother Phyllis (Michelle Stafford).
Lily discovers that Daniel is keeping his addiction to pornography from her. The couple undergoes counseling but ultimately end their marriage.
A mutual attraction develops between Lily and the recently divorced Cane Ashby (Daniel Goddard). Before they become an official couple, the difference in their ages becomes an obstacle for them. She is twenty and he is thirty-one. They fight their feelings before ultimately giving in and starting a romantic relationship with each other, which Neil disapproves of.
Lily wins the Fresh Faces of Jabot contest and becomes an exclusive model for Jabot Cosmetics, owned by Cane's family, the Chancellors. She does photo shoots and undergoes constant criticism from Chloe Mitchell (Elizabeth Hendrickson), Lily's modeling mentor. Chloe encourages Lily to lose weight. She realizes she is pregnant with Cane's baby. He proposes marriage to her, but she declines. Lily miscarries the baby and blames herself for the loss.
Chloe flirts with Cane behind Lily's back. After realizing she is pregnant, she decides to trick Cane into thinking he fathered her baby by taking advantage of him after he passes out. A paternity test comes back showing that Cane can not be ruled out as the father. Lily convinces Cane to marry Chloe for the baby's sake.
Cane's brother, Billy Abbott (Billy Miller), returns to Genoa City and realizes he is the father of Chloe's baby. He keeps the secret to himself and romantically pursues Lily. She starts dating him despite her initial misgivings over becoming involved with him because he is Cane's brother and the uncle of her best friend Colleen Carlton (Tammin Sursok). They engage in sex for the first time in his office at Jabot. Afterward, they agree to take the relationship slowly.
Cane and Chloe become jealous of Lily and Billy's relationship. When they find out they are spending Valentine's Day together in the mountains, Cane and Chloe, separately, go up to the cabin they are staying at. Just as Chloe arrives, Billy confesses to Lily that he is the father of Chloe's baby. Chloe goes into labor and gives birth in the cabin. After Cane discovers the truth about the baby's paternity he pursues custody of the child. Lily disagrees with the choice and refuses to marry him because of it. Cane later changes his mind and proposes to Lily again. She accepts and they marry. Shortly after marriage, Cane and Lily decide to start a family.
When confronted, Cane reveals that he is not actually Phillip Chancellor III. Everyone is furious, except for Katherine who simply wants to know why he had tricked them all. On August 5th/6th, 2011, Lily goes to see Cane at the bar in which he works at, and tells him that she is filing for divorce. On August 18 2011, the divorce papers were served and Lily and Daniel half way make love, before Lily starts to have good thoughts of Cane. On August 31st, Cane meets Lily at Crimson Lights, finalizes the divorce and tells her that he's going to move back to Australia. As Cane is about ready to board on an airplane to Australia, Lily bought Mattie and Charlie to the airport to decide whether or not Cane wants to go back to Australia.
Soap Opera Weekly's Di Lauro also praised Khalil for her performance during the death of Lily's best friend Colleen Carlton. Di Lauro considered Lily and Colleen's last scenes to be "a bona fide tearjerker" and "one of the most touching scenes to air" during the story of Colleen's death. "Lily could have easily fallen apart and chastised Colleen for leaving her during her house of need," Di Lauro said. "Instead, she held her head high and gave Colleen a proper sendoff... It was as if Lily was gathering strength from Colleen, even as Colleen let go."
Daniel and Lily, gained viewer support with both Khalil and Sherwood in the role of Lily. The couple began during Khalil's first tenure, continued through Sherwood's time on the show, and went into Khalil's second stint. Roscoe Born (Tom Fisher) praised their storyline. "It really brought the two families into so much conflict, and I thought they were very believable as young lovers," Born said. "They were very passionate, and at the same time, really evoked that feeling of first love." When the character's broke up and moved into different sphere's on the show, fans of the couple expressed disappointment. The magazine also praised the couple because putting them together united the two core families, the Winters and the Chancellors.
Michael Fairman referred to Cane and Lily as "one of daytimes's most popular couples" and considered their story with Billy and Chloe as "one of soaps all-time best quadrangle story arcs." Soap Opera Digest's Mallory Harlen praised the quadrangle for adding another layer to Lily. "The always prim, always perfect Lily reminded me way too much of Christine Blair...in a bad way," Harlen said. "But being a woman scorned really worked for her; her new found feistiness is completely fitting for Drucilla's daughter." TV Guide Canada's Nelson Branco criticized the pairing for having, in his opinion, no chemistry and said he wanted Cane "in the big leagues and not with little girls." He also mentioned how the pairing developed "a very vocal, and loyal fanbase." Soap Opera Update named Cane and Lily the best couple on The Young and the Restless for 2008. Viewers voted the pairing into various top couple polls in soap opera magazines.

Eugenie "Genie" Francis Frakes (born Eugenie Ann Francis on May 26, 1962) is an American actress known for her portrayal of Laura Spencer on the ABC daytime drama General Hospital. She is currently playing Genevieve Atkinson on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless. She will soon appear in the web series PRETTY.
Genie met actor/director Jonathan Frakes while filming the television show, Bare Essence. After meeting again during the filming of the miniseries, North and South, Genie and Jonathan started dating in 1985. They became engaged in 1986, and married on May 28, 1988. The couple has two children, Jameson Ivor Frakes, born in 1994, and Elizabeth Francis Frakes, born in 1997. They moved from Belfast, Maine to Beverly Hills, California in 2008 and later moved to Calabasas, California.
Through the years, other daytime soaps have pursued Francis because of her tremendous popularity. She appeared on Days of our Lives as Diana Colville from 1987 to 1989 and on All My Children as con artist and incest victim Ceara Connor Hunter from 1990 to 1992. She reprised her role as Ceara on Loving in November 1991. She then returned to GH in 1993. In 1994, when Francis became pregnant with her first child, the pregnancy was written into the show and Genie took six weeks off for maternity leave. However in early 1997 when she was pregnant again, she took a much longer absence from the show, staying away for nearly a year and a half.
In September 2002 she abruptly left General Hospital. She wanted to take the summer off, and General Hospital held her to the terms on her contract - GH would not give her the time off she requested, and as a result, she quit.
In June 2006, Francis began negotiating with the casting directors on the show in returning to the role of Laura Webber Spencer for a limited run through November. She returned to the show with spectacular fanfare to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Luke and Laura's wedding. The magic of Luke and Laura was recaptured, and the reunion garnered the show more publicity than it had seen in years. Though she reprised the role for only one month, Francis's stint was so successful that she garnered a Daytime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, which she ended up winning in June 2007. "Oh my goodness!" she said. "Thank you so much. I am overwhelmed. I've waited 31 years for this moment."
In December 2007, Francis had a starring role in the Hallmark Channel movie, "The Note," which earned her critical acclaim.
Genie Francis returned to General Hospital in August 2008 to reprise her role as Laura Webber Spencer. Francis told the AP, "It's a mother-daughter story. Years ago when I started playing the character as a 14-year-old girl, it was a mother-daughter story, only I was the daughter. So it's kinda cool this is full circle. It's nice to come back for visits. General Hospital is my home." She continued, "I would stay on, but General Hospital honestly doesn't seem to want that relationship with this character at the moment," said Francis. "They want little short doses during sweeps periods. It's not entirely up to me. I'm thrilled and delighted my audience stands behind me. If they didn't, you can be sure I wouldn't get to come back for these visits." Laura's character was written off as returning to France for treatment for her illness.
On January 31, 2009, Francis reprised her role of Peyton MacGruder in the Hallmark Channel movie, "Taking a Chance on Love." (The Note II).
In late March 2011, it was announced that Francis would be joining the #1 hit daytime serial "The Young and the Restless" as Genevieve Atkinson, the long absent birth mother of the late Cane Ashby. With Francis appearance on Y&R;, she was reunited with former General Hospital co-star Tristan Rogers, who currently portrays Colin Atkinson, the estranged biological father of Cane Ashby.

She started off as the first contestant to perform in the top 32, and was the second voted into the finals, after eventual winner Fantasia Barrino. However, she ended up in the bottom 3 in three of the first five weeks of the finals, although on all three occasions she was the first person out of the bottom group to be declared safe. Starting from the top 7, she was never in the bottom group again, gradually becoming one of the front runners in the competition. Ironically, she became the only person from season three who was never placed in the bottom 2, despite being in the bottom 3 (as the third lowest vote-getter) three times.
