A legislature is a kind of deliberative assembly with the power to pass, amend, and repeal laws. The law created by a legislature is called legislation or statutory law. In addition to enacting laws, legislatures usually have exclusive authority to raise or lower taxes and adopt the budget and other money bills. Legislatures are known by many names, the most common being parliament and congress, although these terms also have more specific meanings.

In parliamentary systems of government, the legislature is formally supreme and appoints a member from its house as the prime minister which acts as the executive. In a presidential system, according to the separation of powers doctrine, the legislature is considered an independent and coequal branch of government along with both the judiciary and the executive.

The primary components of a legislature are one or more chambers or houses: assemblies that can debate and vote upon bills. A legislature with only one house is called unicameral. A bicameral legislature possesses two separate chambers, usually described as an upper house and a lower house, which often differ in duties, powers, and the methods used for the selection of members. Much rarer have been tricameral legislatures; the Massachusetts Governor's Council still exists, but the most recent national example existed in the waning years of caucasian-minority rule in South Africa.

Alan M. Arakawa (born 1951 Wailuku, Maui) is an American politician who is currently the Mayor of the County of Maui in Hawaii. He previously served as Maui mayor from 2002 to 2006., Arakawa graduated from Maui High School and attended the University of Hawai'i at Manoa as a business major. He then entered civil service in 1984 as a wastewater plant worker for Maui County. He rose to the post of supervisor in the wastewater division of the Department of Public Works and he was both a United Public Workers Chief Steward and a Hawai'i Government Employees Association Union Representative.

In 1994, Arakawa first ran for office to become a member of Maui's county council. He won and was subsequently re-elected in 1996 and 2000. He served as Chair of the Planning, Parks and Land Use committees during his tenure. Arakawa also was one of the members that spearheaded a movement to create nonpartisan elections for Maui County government seats. In November 2002, Arakawa was elected in a nonpartisan race to become county mayor.

Akbaruddin Owaisi (born 14 June 1971) is an Indian politician and a MLA. He belongs to All India Majlis-e Ittihad al-Muslimin and is its floor leader in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

Akbaruddin Owaisi was born in Hyderabad to Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi on 14 June 1971. His elder brother is Asaduddin Owaisi, Member of Parliament representing Hyderabad constituency. Akbaruddin Owaisi discontinued his MBBS study midway to help his father, Late Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi retain the Chandrayangutta assembly constituency by winning the elections in 1999. Akbaruddin was first elected to the state Assembly in 1999 and served as a deputy to his elder brother Asaduddin Owaisi, who was leading the MIM in the House. In 2004, Akbaruddin became the floor leader of MIM in the Assembly upon Asaduddin’s election to Lok Sabha from Hyderabad. He was relected in 2009 and now leads the seven-member MIM in the House. Akbaruddin has been very vocal about the land mafia grabbing Wakf properties in the assembly Akbaruddin survived an attempt on his life in april 2011 when a 12 member team of land mafia attacked him ,he was shot thrice and recived multiple stabs but managed to survive ,the whole episode was recorded on camera and made Akbaruddin a survival hero. Akbaruddin owaisi is also the managing director of Owaisi hospital which was setup by his late father Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi for the welfare of the poor .

Kiran Kumar (Kashmiri: किरण कुमार (Devanagari), کرن کمار (Nastaleeq)) is a Mumbai-based Kashmiri Indian actor. He has worked in many Hindi and Gujarati films. He has been the hero in most of the Gujarati movies.^{[citation needed]} He is the son of veteran character actor Jeevan.

Kiran Dhar (stage name- Kiran Kumar) is a descendant of a Kashmir royal family.He is the son of legendary character actor Jeevan. He is married to a Gujarati actress Sushma Verma.^{[citation needed]} They have two children: Vikas Kumar who was working with David Dhawan as an Assistant Director and Srishti, who is a Mass Media graduate and runs a jewellery and clothing label with her mother called "Sush & Shish".

Kiran is a Kashmiri by birth and has ties with the Royal Family by virtue of being the grand son of the Vazir-e-Vazarat of Gilgit. He is a devout believer of Sai baba and has a production house named after the saint- "Sainama Visions"

Back in the day Kumar carried the reputation of being a ladies man and had a string of relationships with actresses like Malika Sarabhai, Yogita Bali and Rekha among others.
