Lagardère Active, a major player in French media, is undergoing a digital transformation so that they can reuse existing information, including customizing and publishing it to a variety of media types such as magazines, radios, and TV.
Vincent Mas, the head of the Content Factory Project, will describe how his team is working with MarkLogic partner 4D Concept to build a metadata and content repository to facilitate this transformation, including describing the challenges Lagardère was facing and how these have been addressed.

EU Commission accepts legally binding commitments from Simon & Schuster, Harper Collins, Hachette, Holtzbrinck and Apple for sale of e-books
The European Commission has adopted a decision that renders legally binding commitments offered by Apple and four international publishers - Simon & Schuster (CBS Corp., USA), Harper Collins (News Corp., USA), Hachette Livre (Lagardère Publishing, France), Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck (Germany; owner of inter alia Macmillan). The Commission had concerns that these companies may have contrived to limit retail price competition for e-books in the European Economic Area (EEA), in breach of EU antitrust rules. To address these concerns, the companies offered in particular to terminate on-going agency agreements and to exclude certain clauses in their agency agreements during the next five years. The publishers have also offered to give retailers freedom to discount e-books, subject to certain conditions, during a two-year period. After a market test (see IP/12/986), the Commission is satisfied that the final commitments remedy the identified competition concerns it had identified (see also MEMO/12/983).

Frank is an executive vice chairman of Hearst Corporation, one of the nation's largest private companies engaged in a broad range of publishing, broadcasting, cable networking and diversified communications activities. He is also chairman of the Corporation's Executive Committee, a director of Hearst Corporation and a trustee of The Hearst Family Trust established under the will of William Randolph Hearst. In addition, he sits on a number of corporate committees and the Hearst Foundation Boards where he has served for more than 25 years. Bennack served as Hearst's CEO for more than 28 years. He directed the company through an unprecedented period of growth from when he began his first tenure as CEO in 1979 through June 2013 when he stepped down—increasing revenues 12 times and growing earnings more than 30 times what they had been, through investments, acquisitions and startups. Today, Hearst is comprised of some 200 businesses and 20,000 employees. Under his leadership, the company launched three leading cable networks with ABC, A&E;, HISTORY and Lifetime, and invested in the ESPN family of networks, now in 190 countries and territories. On Bennack's watch, Hearst has marched toward diversification and global expansion, including its nearly $1 billion acquisition in 2011 of Lagardère's 100 international titles outside of France, its purchase of healthcare information leader Milliman Care Guidelines LLC, its acquisition of a 50 percent interest in global ratings agency Fitch Group and its establishment of a joint venture with television producer Mark Burnett. Bennack was also instrumental in the decision to create what today is Hearst Television Inc., one of the nation's largest non-network owned television station groups, which operates 29 television stations. During his tenure, Hearst has launched such magazines as Country Living, Food Network Magazine, HGTV Magazine, Marie Claire and O, The Oprah Magazine. Prior to his first tenure as chief executive, Bennack served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Corporation and, prior to that, as vice president and general manager of the Hearst Newspaper Group. He also served in a variety of management posts, including a seven-year tenure (1967 to 1974) as publisher and editor of the San Antonio Light. Bennack is a director of Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation. He is chairman of Hearst Magazines UK, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hearst Corporation. Bennack is also a governor and vice chairman of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and its Healthcare System, a managing director of the Metropolitan Opera of New York, chairman emeritis of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and chairman of The Paley Center for Media (formerly The Museum of Television & Radio). He was the 1992-93 chairman of the Newspaper Association of America (formerly the American Newspaper Publishers Association). As a teenager, the San Antonio native was host of both television and radio programs. He eventually entered publishing in his hometown, and rose from classified advertising salesman to newspaper publisher by the age of 34. AMAZON.COM has halted pre-orders of some Disney movies, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, in what appears to be another contract dispute after the online giant began a protracted spat with publisher Hachette Book Group this year. Physical copies of titles such as "Maleficent" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were unavailable for order on Amazon.com on Sunday. Digital copies of some of the movies in question were still available for pre-order. Amazon.com did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report. A Disney spokesman had no comment. EU Commission accepts legally binding commitments from Simon & Schuster, Harper Collins, Hachette, Holtzbrinck and Apple for sale of e-books
The European Commission has adopted a decision that renders legally binding commitments offered by Apple and four international publishers - Simon & Schuster (CBS Corp., USA), Harper Collins (News Corp., USA), Hachette Livre (Lagardère Publishing, France), Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck (Germany; owner of inter alia Macmillan). The Commission had concerns that these companies may have contrived to limit retail price competition for e-books in the European Economic Area (EEA), in breach of EU antitrust rules. To address these concerns, the companies offered in particular to terminate on-going agency agreements and to exclude certain clauses in their agency agreements during the next five years. The publishers have also offered to give retailers freedom to discount e-books, subject to certain conditions, during a two-year period. After a market test (see IP/12/986), the Commission is satisfied that the final commitments remedy the identified competition concerns it had identified (see also MEMO/12/983).

Bennack was also instrumental in the decision to create what today is Hearst Television Inc., one of the nation's largest non-network owned television station groups, which operates 29 television stations. During his tenure, Hearst has launched such magazines as Country Living, Food Network Magazine, HGTV Magazine, Marie Claire and O, The Oprah Magazine.

AMAZON.COM has halted pre-orders of some Disney movies, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, in what appears to be another contract dispute after the online giant began a protracted spat with publisher Hachette Book Group this year.
Physical copies of titles such as "Maleficent" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were unavailable for order on Amazon.com on Sunday. Digital copies of some of the movies in question were still available for pre-order.
Amazon.com did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report. A Disney spokesman had no comment.
Amazon has been waging a battle against Hachette, the fourth-largest U.S. book publisher, over the price the online retailer can charge for ebooks. Hachette is owned by France's Lagardere.

A group called Authors United ran a two-page ad in the New York Times on Sunday, criticizing Amazon for halting pre-orders from some Hachette authors and slowing delivery of books by Hachette authors. The ad was signed by more than 900 writers, including Stephen King and Donna Tartt.
Amazon says pricing ebooks at $14.99 or $19.99 is too expensive. It argues that cheaper ebooks sell more copies and so ultimately generate more revenue and more royalties for authors.

Mark is also a regular columnist on music licensing for Billboard.
Under his leadership, Consect successfully organized mobile entertainment industry conferences for audiences, developed content businesses for companies including Lagardere, NTT DoCoMo, France Telecom and Index Holdings and published a series of mobile industry newsletters and reports. The ringtone charting system, launched in October 2004 within 180 days of development with more than 85% of US sales tabulated weekly, served as the foundation for Nielsen Mobile.In the US mobile content market, Frieser was responsible for a number of firsts, including conceiving the world’s first Hip-Hop ringtone brand and label (Blingtones), the first mobile entertainment partnership with a major celebrity (Carmen Electra) and the first SMS-based game of skill for prizes and rewards (Text2WIN)As SVP of Marketing, BD and Content at Zedge.net, IDT’s 18MM member mobile content portal, he successfully co-managed and developed the site’s redesign, helped grow Zedge.net from 5MM to 13MM members, implemented SMS-based content services, and managed high-level branded content services with partners that included Lionsgate, Overture Films, Starz Media, Ghost House Mobile, Music World Music (Beyonce and more than 30 other artists), Thomas Dolby, DEVO, among others.
