Mao Zedong's Crystal Mausoleum | China Uncensored
The perfectly preserved corpse of Chairman Mao Zedong lies within a crystal coffin in an ornate mausoleum in heart of Tiananmen Square. Even though Mao is responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of Chinese people, and led the country on disastrous campaigns of death and destruction like the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, even today, tens of thousands come to pay their respects and see the Great Helmsman, the man that transformed China. THE GOD IS DEAD, LONG LIVE ... - a video by Maria Korporal dedicated to the year 1924, as part of the project 100x100=900 - www.9hundred.org
(per il testo in italiano scorrere in basso)
The deification of human beings is as old as the history of mankind. In worshipping dictators and kings people loose their critical sense and close their eyes to the crimes and atrocities committed on their leaders’ behalf. While the death of a deified person puts an end to his earthly existence, his followers elevate their beloved god to the realms of eternity.
The beginning of the year 1924, from the end of January to the end of February, saw the death, rebirth and rise of three well known deified personalities. Lenin died on January 21 and his legendary funeral took place shortly after; on February 12 the granite lid of Tutankhamun’s sarcophagus was raised, revealing the king’s golden effigy; mid-February the young Mao Zedong arrived in Shanghai, the city saw him there in a crucial phase in his career: he was the organization secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and he became the Kuomintang executive.
In “The god is dead, long live ...” these events are documented in three short movies, composed by the artist from images, sounds and footage she found in several Internet archives. In the video two onlookers alternately watch the pieces: an animal (represented by one of the orangutans in the Roman zoo) and a human (represented by the artist herself). What do they see? Do they experience the magic influence? Do they know the naked truth that lies behind the scenes they watch? And you, spectators in 2013, what about you?
The video is part of the project 100x100=900: from all continents one hundred video artists have been invited to dedicate a video artwork to one year of the 20th century, randomly chosen for each artist. Together they make up a show that can be seen around the world in 2013. See also the website www.9hundred.org

THE GOD IS DEAD, LONG LIVE ...

Under a Different Sky
Under a Different Sky : a cinematic exploration of the less travelled China.
China is large in terms of geographical area. Its primary culture and numerous ethnic sub-cultures co-exist by virtue of the massive population enclosed by the country's long borders that have, over millennia, been incrementally lengthened by imperial conquests. Before making this film I had always thought of Chinese culture as being about as far removed from ours as is possible to imagine.
The 1960s and 1970s were marked by waves of aggressive political and social activism throughout the world: witness the 1968 riots in Paris and civil unrest in the US. One signifier of this new activism was Jane Fonda’s visit to Hanoi in 1972 in an attempt to bring an awareness about the people on the other side in the Vietnam war. Similarly, but in an action that resulted in far less outrage than Fonda’s visit to North Vietnam, Shirley McLaine was invited by Mao Zedong to visit China in 1973 to make a film. The aim was to bring an awareness about daily life in China, and especially the life of Chinese women. The film that was written and produced by Shirley McLaine, and filmed and edited by Claudia Weill, was called “The Other Half of the Sky”. They chose this title because the phrase was originally from a Chinese proverb and had been subsequently used by Mao in his writings.
All of these things were on my mind and suggested to me that China existed under a sky that was, metaphorically speaking, somehow different from ours.
The film "Under a Different Sky” juxtaposes the new China of the 21st century, with its iPhone factories and maglev train, with the old and somewhat romantic view of China that I had before my trip. The film arranges images of urban and rural China in apposition to reveal the wide differences in lifestyle that exist within the country, and the differences that exist between the Chinese and ourselves. The film is not arranged in the strict order of the places visited during my tour of China - instead, new and old, rural and urban, are dovetailed and juxtaposed in order to highlight and contrast these differences.
My goal was to make a film that offers a sympathetic view of the Chinese people.
Filmed in China over a 4 week period in September and October 2013 using a Sony NEX-FS100. Edited using FCP 7. Color graded using Red Giant's Colorista and Magic Bullet Looks. Music by Michael Stearns, Kevin Shields, Robert Rich, He Shuying, Pooja Pao Lee and Thomas Oliver.
I hope that you enjoy “Under a Different Sky”.

JR - Wrinkles of the city Shanghai
For memory can stumble and fall, disappear any minute as the elder leave us, JR shows us that it is important not to forget what the elder have to pass to the young ones. Without judging, JR just gives us bits of History pages in an artistic, yet poetic, social and above all human way.
JR takes his Wrinkles of the City project to Shanghai where the last century has been full of ups and downs : from the Japanese occupation, the establishment of the Communist Party, The Liberation, World War II, the end of the foreign concessions, the victory of Mao Zedong over the General Tchang Kaï-Chek’s troops, the Cultural Revolution, the Great Leap Forward to the actual development of the city ...
JR is a photographer who works on the borders of art and activism. To him the streets are one big art gallery and the city is the playground for gigantic shows. Since 2001, from Paris to Los Angeles via Montfermeil-Clichy-sous-Bois in France or Jerusalem, JR has presented many of his giant pasted photos in illicit street shows.
In 2004, he worked on his 28 millimeters series, for which the first chapter was called Portrait of a generation even made the New York Times cover. The giant portraits of young people from the Paris suburbs were then shown in their very own towns and then brought back, to raise consciousness, to the center of Paris.
After that in 2007 he added a second chapter to the series : 28 millimeters - Face2Face, Israelis and Palestinians - Portrait of twin brothers. JR made portraits of Israelis and Palestinians who had the same job to show them literally face to face on both sides of the separation / security wall in Israel. Then from 2007 JR initiates his project Women Are Heroes that is displayed from 2008. Women Are Heroes has also been the subject of a film made by JR, selected at Cannes Film Festival for the Critics' Week in association with the Official Selection.
Since then, JR has started a new series of works The Wrinkles of the City, imprinting the cities’ memories through the testimony of their elder inhabitants. Each pasted portraits is like a layer, thick of paper and glue, which is superimposed on the facades. The superimposition of the portraits and their wrinkles shows the city’s creases, highlights traces of history, sometimes in a painful way for a city that also looses certain aspect of its own youth..
