In 1966, China's Communist leader Mao Zedong launched what became known as the Cultural Revolution in order to reassert his authority over the Chinese government. Mao called on the nation's youth to purge the "impure" elements of Chinese society and revive the revolutionary spirit that had led to victory in the civil war 20 decades earlier and the formation of the People's Republic of China. The Cultural Revolution continued in various phases until Mao's death in 1976.

Hung Lau or Red House (Chinese: 紅樓, Chinese: 红楼) is a house in a farm in Pak Kok, Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, near the Tuen Mun Public Riding School, Butterfly Estate and Castle Peak. The house and the farm was where Dr. Sun Yat-sen planned to overthrow the Qing dynasty.
It named after its appearance, red bricks with plastering in red colour. The two-storey house is of the combination of Chinese and Western architectures.
Adjacent to the house is a garden commemorating Dr. Sun Yat-sen and is one of few places in Hong Kong where the flag of the Republic of China is flown freely.
History
In 1901, a Hong Kong merchant who met Dr. Sun Yat-sen and joined Revive China Society in 1895 provided his farm to the Society as the secret base. The farm then provided secrecy and sustenance due to its large size and the location. Here coups in Guangzhou and Wuhan were planned.

Take LRT route No.610 or 615 and alight at Butterfly Stop, or KMB route No. 59A, 59M, 59X and 259B.

CCTV English News reports the efforts of Buddhist Guru in reviving classical Sanskrit in China. Buddhism dates back nearly three thousand years. Experts widely agree it first came to China during the Han Dynasty, around the first century. Back then, Buddhism was spread through a special form of the language Sanskrit called Siddham.
Few people know it today, but a Buddhist guru in China has devoted himself to the revival of the language. CCTV reporter Meng Qingsheng visited an exhibition, and talked with Guru Zhenjue about his studies.
Guru Zhenjue became a Buddhist 20 years ago. He talks to Buddhas in a "sacred" language... Sanskrit. The Guru stays at home, and studies a more classical form of the language.
"I began my studies from the Buddhist Mantras. Gradually, I got to know the Siddham script. Writing in Siddham gives me a better understanding of Buddhist culture. I can feel the thousands of years of history during which it was spread from India to China. These can all be felt from every stroke of the writing," he said.
The script was popular in ancient China, but failed to spread after the 13th century. The exhibition aims to revive this lost language.
This exhibition is the first of its kind in China. It serves as a way for people to rediscover the essence of Sanskrit after 700 years. And hopefully, it will also help the public learn more about traditional Chinese culture.
Zhenjue says the language carries key elements of Chinese culture. And it will attract more people if presented in art form.
"Few people know the Siddham script. And not many people are interested in it. To understand this culture, we need to separate it from the Buddhist religion. We could see it as a form of culture. Or, as I have done, present it through calligraphy. If we present it in an artistic way, people will pay more attention to this culture," he said.
Zhenjue has two hundred disciples. He says the best way to preserve the language, is to pass it on...
"I would like to pass on the Siddham script to other generations. I have dedicated myself to studying Siddham script. Looking back, the journey was not an easy one," he said.
Guru Zhenjue has two prayer sessions each day. He says no one can claim to really know the language as it was originally used. But he tries his best to decode the way to connect with Buddhas.

[Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]:
"China has a divinely inspired culture. No matter whether it's Chinese medicine, martial arts, writing, or feng shui, they are all passed down by gods."
Longfei Yang is a master of the Shanxi style Praying Mantis Kung Fu and a judge for NTD Television's International Chinese Martial Arts Competition.
Yang says Chinese martial arts go far deeper than just fighting techniques.
[Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]:
"In martial arts, apart from training the body, raising one's moral character is essential. It is only when your morality is high that you can develop external techniques and innate abilities. Just making your body physically very strong doesn't mean that you're a true martial artist."
This sense of morality in martial arts shows the deep connection of Chinese Kung Fu with religion.
[Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]:
"No matter whether it's the Shaolin temple or the Taoist Wudang Mountain, they all have within their spiritual cultivation sets of martial arts techniques. From these, come many amazing stories. There're also martial arts stories from society and they all have a link to Buddhism or Taoism."
Many of these stories are still told today...stories like the Indian monk Da Mo crossing a river floating on a reed stalk, and then meditating in a cave for nine years, before teaching Kung Fu exercises to the monks at the Shaolin temple.
Or the story of the creator of Tai chi boxing, Zhang Sanfeng—said to have lived for around 200 years—due to the healing effect of his martial art.
Even the Chinese characters for martial arts contain deep inner meanings.

"Since ancient times, the character for 'martial' in Chinese has been made up of two components. The lower part means stop. The upper part is Ge, which is a type of weapon in ancient times. So, it actually means, 'stop fighting and stop having conflicts'... So, martial arts are about raising one's moral character—not about fighting with somebody, or contending with others."
Yang used to practice external martial arts that did not emphasize moral cultivation—until he met a master of the Shanxi Style soft Praying Mantis system in China. That was in 1997.
[Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]:
"At the time, the master was already 62 years old. I looked at his age and his physical capabilities. Being in my 20's, I didn't take it to be anything special. I used my quick punches and kicks to spar with him but I discovered that whenever I got close to him, his movements immediately changed direction and my attacks just hit empty space. Within a short time, I exhausted all my energy. All my movements and techniques were not equal to this old man. I realized I was missing the true teachings."
So Yang studied diligently with this master.
[Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]:
"I discovered that in the structure of the body and in practicing the techniques, you've to relax. Once you're relaxed, you can become tranquil in your breath and your heart. ... Only then will there be huge changes in the essential movements—the structure of the body and the transitions between movements. This is the essence of Chinese martial arts."
Yang hopes to revive this essence and to allow the public experience China's divinely inspired culture, via NTD Television's Chinese Martial Arts Competition.

Chinese people believe that their culture has divine origins. [Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]: "China has a divinely inspired culture. No matter whether it's Chinese medicine, martial arts, writing, or feng shui, they are all passed down by gods." Longfei Yang is a master of the Shanxi style Praying Mantis Kung Fu and a judge for NTD Television's International Chinese Martial Arts Competition. Yang says Chinese martial arts go far deeper than just fighting techniques. [Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]: "In martial arts, apart from training the body, raising one's moral character is essential. It is only when your morality is high that you can develop external techniques and innate abilities. Just making your body physically very strong doesn't mean that you're a true martial artist." This sense of morality in martial arts shows the deep connection of Chinese Kung Fu with religion. [Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]: "No matter whether it's the Shaolin temple or the Taoist Wudang Mountain, they all have within their spiritual cultivation sets of martial arts techniques. From these, come many amazing stories. There're also martial arts stories from society and they all have a link to Buddhism or Taoism." Many of these stories are still told today...stories like the Indian monk Da Mo crossing a river floating on a reed stalk, and then meditating in a cave for nine years, before teaching Kung Fu exercises to the monks at the Shaolin temple. Or the story of the creator of Tai chi boxing, Zhang Sanfeng—said to have lived for around 200 years—due to the healing effect of his martial art. Even the Chinese characters for martial arts contain deep inner meanings. [Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]: "Since ancient times, the character for 'martial' in Chinese has been made up of two components. The lower part means stop. The upper part is Ge, which is a type of weapon in ancient times. So, it actually means, 'stop fighting and stop having conflicts'... So, martial arts are about raising one's moral character—not about fighting with somebody, or contending with others." Yang used to practice external martial arts that did not emphasize moral cultivation—until he met a master of the Shanxi Style soft Praying Mantis system in China. That was in 1997. [Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]: "At the time, the master was already 62 years old. I looked at his age and his physical capabilities. Being in my 20's, I didn't take it to be anything special. I used my quick punches and kicks to spar with him but I discovered that whenever I got close to him, his movements immediately changed direction and my attacks just hit empty space. Within a short time, I exhausted all my energy. All my movements and techniques were not equal to this old man. I realized I was missing the true teachings." So Yang studied diligently with this master. [Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]: "I discovered that in the structure of the body and in practicing the techniques, you've to relax. Once you're relaxed, you can become tranquil in your breath and your heart. ... Only then will there be huge changes in the essential movements—the structure of the body and the transitions between movements. This is the essence of Chinese martial arts." Yang hopes to revive this essence and to allow the public experience China's divinely inspired culture, via NTD Television's Chinese Martial Arts Competition.

Cultural Revolution in China
In 1966, China's Communist leader Mao Zedong launched what became known as the Cultural Revolution in order to reassert his authority over the Chinese government. Mao called on the nation's youth to purge the "impure" elements of Chinese society and revive the revolutionary spirit that had led to victory in the civil war 20 decades earlier and the formation of the People's Republic of China. The Cultural Revolution continued in various phases until Mao's death in 1976. -

The script was popular in ancient China, but failed to spread after the 13th century. The exhibition aims to revive this lost language.
This exhibition is the first of its kind in China. It serves as a way for people to rediscover the essence of Sanskrit after 700 years. And hopefully, it will also help the public learn more about traditional Chinese culture.
Zhenjue says the language carries key elements of Chinese culture. And it will attract more people if presented in art form.
"Few people know the Siddham script. And not many people are interested in it. To understand this culture, we need to separate it from the Buddhist religion. We could see it as a form of culture. Or, as I have done, present it through calligraphy. If we present it in an artistic way, people will pay more attention to this culture," he said.
Zhenjue has two hundred disciples. He says the best way to preserve the language, is to pass it on...
"I would like to pass on the Siddham script to other generations. I have dedicated myself to studying Siddham script. Looking back, the journey was not an easy one," he said.
Guru Zhenjue has two prayer sessions each day. He says no one can claim to really know the language as it was originally used. But he tries his best to decode the way to connect with Buddhas.

Chinese people believe that their culture has divine origins.
[Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]:
"China has a divinely inspired culture. No matter whether it's Chinese medicine, martial arts, writing, or feng shui, they are all passed down by gods."
Longfei Yang is a master of the Shanxi style Praying Mantis Kung Fu and a judge for NTD Television's International Chinese Martial Arts Competition.
Yang says Chinese martial arts go far deeper than just fighting techniques.
[Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]:
"In martial arts, apart from training the body, raising one's moral character is essential. It is only when your morality is high that you can develop external techniques and innate abilities. Just making your body physically very strong doesn't mean that you're a true martial artist."
This sense of morality in martial arts shows the deep connection of Chinese Kung Fu with religion.
[Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]:
"No matter whether it's the Shaolin temple or the Taoist Wudang Mountain, they all have within their spiritual cultivation sets of martial arts techniques. From these, come many amazing stories. There're also martial arts stories from society and they all have a link to Buddhism or Taoism."
Many of these stories are still told today...stories like the Indian monk Da Mo crossing a river floating on a reed stalk, and then meditating in a cave for nine years, before teaching Kung Fu exercises to the monks at the Shaolin temple.
Or the story of the creator of Tai chi boxing, Zhang Sanfeng—said to have lived for around 200 years—due to the healing effect of his martial art.
Even the Chinese characters for martial arts contain deep inner meanings.

"Since ancient times, the character for 'martial' in Chinese has been made up of two components. The lower part means stop. The upper part is Ge, which is a type of weapon in ancient times. So, it actually means, 'stop fighting and stop having conflicts'... So, martial arts are about raising one's moral character—not about fighting with somebody, or contending with others."
Yang used to practice external martial arts that did not emphasize moral cultivation—until he met a master of the Shanxi Style soft Praying Mantis system in China. That was in 1997.
[Longfei Yang, NTD Martial Arts Competition Judge]:
"At the time, the master was already 62 years old. I looked at his age and his physical capabilities. Being in my 20's, I didn't take it to be anything special. I used my quick punches and kicks to spar with him but I discovered that whenever I got close to him, his movements immediately changed direction and my attacks just hit empty space. Within a short time, I exhausted all my energy. All my movements and techniques were not equal to this old man. I realized I was missing the true teachings."
So Yang studied diligently with this master.

"I discovered that in the structure of the body and in practicing the techniques, you've to relax. Once you're relaxed, you can become tranquil in your breath and your heart. ... Only then will there be huge changes in the essential movements—the structure of the body and the transitions between movements. This is the essence of Chinese martial arts."
Yang hopes to revive this essence and to allow the public experience China's divinely inspired culture, via NTD Television's Chinese Martial Arts Competition.

In this game bethesda tried their best to revive the old classics in the two fallout games, trying to make this game a sandbox, 3d action rpg. This time the game takes place in the area around what used washington dc, called the capital wasteland, and it is a messed up place. Our hero, the Lonely wanderer has lived in a vault his whole life, until his father all of a sudden takes a leave, leaving the whole vault in chaos! This makes our hero have to make some difficult decisions and leaves him in the dangerous wasteland! Our hero has to take on the dangers of the super mutants as well as the Enclave, who protects the one called "President eden"! Can our hero make it all?
From wikipedia: The game starts with the main character as a newborn, whereupon the player determines the race, the gender, and the general appearance of their character. As a one-year-old baby, the infant reads a child's book titled You're SPECIAL, where the player can set the character's starting S.P.E.C.I.A.L. primary attributes: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. The character gains a set of Skills with base levels determined by these attributes. At age 10, the character obtains a Pip-Boy, a computerized wristwatch which allows the player to access a menu with stats, maps, data and items. The character also obtains their first weapon, a BB gun. At age 16, the character takes the Generalized Occupational Aptitude Test (G.O.A.T.) to determine the three Skills they wish the character to focus on.
As the character progresses through the game, experience points are earned that are used to achieve levels of accomplishment. Upon achieving a new level, the player receives a set of skill points that can be assigned to improve any of the Skill percentages. For instance, increasing the lock pick skill grants the player the ability to pick harder locks to unlock doors and supply crates. A Perk is granted at each level, which offers advantages of varying quality and form. Many Perks have a set of prerequisites that must be satisfied, and new Perks are unlocked every two levels.

The immediate or proximate cause of the crisis in 2008 was the failure or risk of failure at major financial institutions globally, starting with the rescue of investment bank Bear Stearns in March 2008 and the failure of Lehman Brothers in September 2008. Many of these institutions had invested heavily in risky securities that lost much or all of their value when U.S. and European housing bubbles began to deflate during the 2007-2009 period. Further, many institutions had become dependent on short-term (overnight) funding markets subject to disruption.[37][38]
The origin of these housing bubbles involved two major factors: 1) low interest rates in the U.S. and Europe following the 2000-2001 U.S. recession; and 2) significant growth in savings available from developing nations due to ongoing trade imbalances.[39] These factors drove a large increase in demand for high-yield investments. Large investment banks connected the housing markets to this large supply of savings via innovative new securities, fueling housing bubbles in the U.S. and Europe.[40]
Many institutions lowered credit standards to continue feeding the global demand for mortgage securities, generating huge profits while passing the risk to investors. However, while the bubbles developed, household debt levels rose sharply after the year 2000 globally. Households became dependent on being able to refinance their mortgages. Further, U.S. households often had adjustable rate mortgages, which had lower initial interest rates and payments that later rose. When global credit markets essentially stopped funding mortgage-related investments in the 2007-2008 period, U.S. homeowners were no longer able to refinance and defaulted in record numbers, leading to the collapse of securities backed by these mortgages that now pervaded the system.[40][41]
The failure rates of subprime mortgages were the first symptom of a credit boom turned to bust and of a real estate shock. But large default rates on subprime mortgages cannot account for the severity of the crisis. Rather, low-quality mortgages acted as an accelerant to the fire that spread through the entire financial system. The latter had become fragile as a result of several factors that are unique to this crisis: the transfer of assets from the balance sheets of banks to the markets, the creation of complex and opaque assets, the failure of ratings agencies to properly assess the risk of such assets, and the application of fair value accounting. To these novel factors, one must add the now standard failure of regulators and supervisors in spotting and correcting the emerging weaknesses.
By 2007, real estate bubbles were still under way in many parts of the world,[58] especially in the United States,[12] France, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Australia, United Arab Emirates, New Zealand, Ireland, Poland,[59] South Africa, Israel, Greece, Bulgaria, Croatia,[60] Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Finland, Argentina,[61] Baltic states, India, Romania, Ukraine, and China.[62] U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said in mid-2005 that "at a minimum, there's a little 'froth' [in the U.S. housing market]...it's hard not to see that there are a lot of local bubbles".[63]
The Economist magazine, writing at the same time, went further, saying "the worldwide rise in house prices is the biggest bubble in history".[64] Real estate bubbles are (by definition of the word "bubble") followed by a price decrease (also known as a housing price crash) that can result in many owners holding negative equity (a mortgage debt higher than the current value of the property).
During 2008, three of the largest U.S. investment banks either went bankrupt (Lehman Brothers) or were sold at fire sale prices to other banks (Bear Stearns and Merrill Lynch). The investment banks were not subject to the more stringent regulations applied to depository banks. These failures augmented the instability in the global financial system. The remaining two investment banks, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, potentially facing failure, opted to become commercial banks, thereby subjecting themselves to more stringent regulation but receiving access to credit via the Federal Reserve.

Abandoning its former identity as a 'revolutionary party', the CCP now regards itself as a 'governing party' committed to meeting the diverse needs of its people and realizing China's revitalization as a great power. To enhance its ability to realize these aims, the CCP has enacted extensive political and ideological reforms. Central to that effort are changes to how the party develops and oversees strategy and policy. Few studies are available on the CCP's adoption of this new identity and of its political implications. Timothy Heath's new book, China's New Governing Party Paradigm: Political Renewal and the Pursuit of National Rejuvenation, remedies that oversight by explaining the historic context, drivers, and meaning of the governing party paradigm.
Timothy Heath is Senior International and Defense Analyst at the RAND Corporation and a recognized expert on Chinese strategy and political-military topics. He served for five years as the senior analyst in the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM) China Strategic Focus Group and has over fifteen years of experience in the US government as a specialist on China. Mr. Heath has authored many articles and a book chapter on topics related to Chinese security and political issues. He earned his MA in Asian Studies from the George Washington University and speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese.

Since 1900, successive waves of rural reconstruction have provided a vibrant alternative to both capitalist and socialist modernisation programmes. In the face of the destruction of rural communities, the rural reconstruction movement has developed as series of innovative grassroots initiatives that work for the well-being of all.
China's recent history has been a story of rapid industrialisation, but just as no system is ever truly uniform or all-encompassing, diverse and dynamic alternatives have thrived away from the centre. At the turn of the last century, social activists and intellectuals came together in in the villages of North China to create a series of radical social experiments in neighbourhood organisation, education and local enterprise. The 1950s -1980s saw a second wave of Rural Reconstruction that revived traditional small-scale peasant economies and restored rural self-governance. From 2000 intellectuals and social activists have come together again to revive the Rural Reconstruction Movement. This new wave has seen the emergence of organic farming, peasants' cooperatives, clubs of peasant workers, and community supported agriculture, among others. In harmony with this, from 2007, central government policy has placed "Ecological Civilization" as a guiding principle of the whole nation.
Dr Sit Tsui shares reflections on the prospects for rural China today, the challenges the country faces, hopes for an "Ecological Civilisation" and the lessons for Transition from the Chinese experience.
