Should we Trust the Scientists? - Professor The Lord Winston - Gresham College Lectures
http://www.gresham.ac.uk/uploads/RobertWinston.jpg The 2005 Gresham Special Lecture was given at The Great Hall, Guildhall, delivered by Professor The Lord Winston.
Robert Winston was educated at St Paul's School and the University of London, where he is currently Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College. Lord Winston is President of the British Academy, Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University and Director of NHS Research and Development for The Hammersmith Hospitals Trust, one of the UK's leading medical research centres. Since his popular television series 'Your Life in Their Hands' was first broadcast in 1979, he has made many radio and television programmes in addition to continuing his research and taking an active role in the House of Lords, where he was until recently Chairman of the Select Committee on Science and Technology and the All-Party Group on Research and Development in Fertility and Contraception.
Introduced by: Lord Sutherland of Houndwood KT, Provost, Gresham College
This was the 2005 Special Lecture.

Professor Peter Higgs broadcast footage
This footage - shot in February 2012 and copyright the University of Edinburgh - is of Professor Peter Higgs, theoretical physicist and recipient of the Edinburgh Award 2011.
It is intended for media outlets, who should note that this material is embargoed until 18:00 GMT on Friday 24 February 2012. Media should also note that there is a smaller thumbnail file, which sits alongside this file.
The footage shows Professor Higgs having casts of his hands taken at a stonemasons in Edinburgh, the city which he has called home for more than 50 years. These casts will be used to create a sculpture that will sit in the quadrangle outside Edinburgh City Chambers.
In his interview, Professor Higgs says it is an honour to receive the Edinburgh Award 2011, of how he came to the Scottish capital for the first time in 1948 and how his early work at the University of Edinburgh laid the foundations for his most famous piece of research, concerning the Higgs boson. He also explains what it might mean to him, should scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) discover the existence of the Higgs boson.
There is also an interview with Dr Alan Walker, a physicist who worked alongside Professor Higgs for many years. He explains both the importance of Professor Higgs' work and details how some of the scientists now searching for the Higgs boson at CERN in Switzerland were taught by Professor Higgs at Edinburgh.
The Higgs boson is an important component of the Standard Model of particle physics that helps explain how objects have mass.
Following nominations from the public, Professor Higgs was chosen as the winner of the 2011 Edinburgh Award by a judging panel chaired by the Lord Provost, with representatives from all political groups on the City of Edinburgh Council, Edinburgh Voluntary Organisations Council and Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce.
The four previous winners of the Edinburgh Award are judoist George Kerr, writer Ian Rankin, author JK Rowling and cyclist Sir Chris Hoy.
Caption details as follows:

The Lisbon Earthquake: Two hundred and fifty years on - Lord Sutherland of Houndwood KT FBA - Gresham College Lectures
On 1 November 1755 Lisbon was devastated by a massive earthquake. The reverberations went far beyond the loss of thirty thousand lives, and the religious doubts and counter-affirmations which followed have crucial relevance to dominant forms of belief today.
Lord Sutherland of Houndwood has been Gesham College's Provost since 2002. Former Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, Lord Sutherland has held a number of important public appointments including the Chair of the Royal Commission on the funding of long-term care of the elderly. Stewart Sutherland read philosophy at Aberdeen University before completing his studies at Cambridge and embarking on a university teaching career which included posts in North Wales, Stirling and King's College London where he was Principal for five years before becoming Vice-Chancellor of the University of London and HM Chief Inspector of Schools in England. He is President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the Saltire Society.

Spiritual Meaning in the Chaos of Change: Carolyn Gordon
“Making Spiritual Meaning in the Chaos of Change” was the focus of a two-day conference for pastors in Seattle, Washington, in March, sponsored by Fuller Northwest and the Office of Alumni and Church Relations. Faculty members Mark Labberton, Chap Clark, Carolyn Gordon, and Scott Cormode explored ways church leaders can respond to social change while remaining grounded in their faith.
Mark Labberton, director of the Ogilvie Institute of Preaching, discussed both the “Fear and Dramas of Ministry” and “Power and Dynamics of Ministry,” saying, “The Lord has set us in a broad place, not a narrow place of fear.” We tend to get caught up in dealing with our own insecurities, “but there are real fears and real power in the world where God’s people need to be,” he said. “The goal isn’t just to get people to church, but to be transformed ourselves to be salt and light” in that world.
Vice Provost Chap Clark, speaking on “The Courage to Define Reality,” emphasized that leadership has to come from the inside out. People in leadership tend to try to skip over their brokenness, but those who are self-aware and willing to be vulnerable are better leaders. Clark also stressed the importance of teamwork in ministry—that “everyone needs everyone else to achieve a common goal. Leaders need to recognize that every person matters.”
“The essence of Christian leadership is to transform people’s mental models so that God’s people use Christian categories to make sense of their lives,” stated Scott Cormode, Hugh De Pree Professor of Leadership Development, as he spoke on “Making Sense and Making Promises.” Leaders must make public promises and ask their people to hold them to those promises, he also said; but too often leaders—pastors included—violate those promises by sending mixed messages.
In her talk “Encountering Night Creepers, Weepers and Seekers,” Associate Professor of Communication Carolyn Gordon spoke of clergy as wounded healers who are called to be authentic and transparent in their ministry. “We preach out of our pain,” she said—and when those in our congregation are in pain, “sometimes we don’t need to have the answer, but to wrestle with the question. Validate their questions; don’t just give the answer you think they want to hear and send them on their way.”
