Lutz Rath plays Schwitters' "Ursonate"
Lutz Rath performs Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948) -- his "Ursonate" (1922-32) -- with voice and cello, creating an extraordinary new approach to performing a foundational work of "sound poetry." Performed at White Box in NYC on August 26, 2010 in a program with an "axial composition" by David Arner, George Quasha, and Charles Stein, also online here. Curation by Juan Puntes. Camerawork by Susie Lim. Video editing by George Quasha. The work has been performed at various speeds (Schwitters' own performance, audible online, is not one of the fastest). Lutz Rath performs only a part of the work for around 13 minutes, whereas typically a full performance lasts 45 minutes. He also combines cello (spontaneous composition) with a more formal spoken performance of a part of the text. This could become a new way to perform Schwitters. The title has been translated "Originary Sonata" or "Primal Sonata." The text/sound poem was influenced by Raoul Hausmann's poem "fmsbw" which Schwitters' heard recited by Hausmann in Prague in 1921. Schwitters often performed the piece, developing it over time, and eventually publishing his notations for the recital in the last Merz periodical (1932).- published: 19 Dec 2013

Discovery Of Art: Kurt Schwitters
This informative program presents a look at the greatest works of art created by this extraordinary artist. Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948) was one of the leading protagonists of the 20th century. He was a painter, sculptor, architect, poet and playwright, as well as a utopian romantic, subverting and transforming everything he touched into art. This DVD provides a complete look at the works of the German artist, now best known for his collages and junk sculpture. Schwitters began painting as an expressionist, but in 1919 he turned to collage, incorporating into his works trash such as train tickets and newspapers, which he exploited for their color, texture and surprise value. Includes many of Schwitters most famous creations filmed during an exhibition of his works at the George Pompidou Museum. Kurt Schwitters - Ursonate (w/ Andy Partridge & Harold Budd)
A ?mashup? of a recording of Kurt Schwitters' sound poem "Ursonate" with a song titled "Anima Mundi" by Andy Partridge and Harold Budd, off of their wonderful album Through the Hill. Very quickly threw this together (before a radio show), and was amazed at how well the Schwitters piece naturally fit with the music. Very minor edits were made to the Schwitters recording in terms of lengthening and shortening pauses, but no edits were made in terms of pitch. No edits were made to the Partridge/Budd song.- published: 19 Dec 2013
