Visiting TODAY in person, former President George W. Bush talks to Hoda Kotb about immigration. “The system really needs to be reformed and fixed,” he says, calling for “an asylum system that is more robust” and changes to work visas. “It’s an easy issue to frighten some of the electorate,” he says, calling the current Republican party “isolationist, protectionist and to a certain extent, nativist.” He also discusses the Jan. 6 siege of the Capitol: “I felt ill … but I was optimistic that we would survive that.” Regarding the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, he says he’s “deeply concerned about the plight of women and girls in that country.” He also reveals why many of his paintings are of U.S. veterans and immigrants.

6 siege of the Capitol: “I felt ill … but I was optimistic that we would survive that.” Regarding the withdrawal of U.S. troops from
Afghanistan, he says he’s “deeply concerned about the plight of women and girls in that country.” He also reveals why many of his paintings are of U.S. veterans and immigrants.

Exclusive DW interview: Former President George W. Bush reflects on his relationship with Chancellor Angela Merkel and her legacy.
"Merkel brought class and dignity to a very important position and made very hard decisions. She did what's best for Germany, and did so based upon principle," former U.S. President George W. Bush said in an interview with DW Washington Bureau Chief Ines Pohl ahead of Chancellor Angela Merkel's farewell visit to the White House on Thursday, July 15.
The interview at the Bush family's summer home in Maine was conducted as part of the DW documentary "Angela Merkel – Navigating a World in Crisis," which will be published on our DW Documentary YouTube channel in September, shortly before the federal elections which will determine Merkel's succession.

A little more than a week after the September 11 attacks, President George W. Bush delivered an address to the nation before a joint session of session of Congress. On 9/11, al Qaeda hijackers commandeered four commercial airplanes and crashed them into the World Trade Center towers in New York, the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C. and a Pennsylvania field, killing thousands.
In the address, Bush demanded the Taliban in
Afghanistan, “Deliver to United States authorities all the leaders of al Qaeda who hide in your land. ...Close immediately and permanently every terrorist training camp in Afghanistan, and hand over every terrorist, and every person in their support structure, to appropriate authorities.” He also underscored that America’s fight was with al Qaeda, not the the religion of Islam, saying “The enemy of America is not our many Muslim friends. It is not our many Arab friends. Our enemy is a radical network of terrorists and every government that supports them.”
Here is Bush’s full address as he delivered it on September 20, 2001.
