Lynn Margulis (born Lynn Petra Alexander; March 5, 1938 – November 22, 2011) was an American evolutionary theorist, science author, educator, and popularizer, and was the primary modern proponent for the significance of symbiosis in biological evolution. Historian Jan Sapp has said that "Lynn Margulis’s name is as synonymous with symbiosis as Charles Darwin’s is with evolution." In particular, Margulis transformed and fundamentally framed current understanding of the evolution of cells with nuclei – an event Ernst Mayr called "perhaps the most important and dramatic event in the history of life" – by proposing it to have been the result of symbiotic mergers of bacteria. Margulis was also the co-developer of Gaia theory with the British chemist James Lovelock, proposing that the Earth functions as a single self-regulating system, and was the principal defender and promulgater of the five kingdom classification of Robert Whittaker.
Throughout her career, Margulis’ work could arouse intense objection (one grant application elicited the response, "Your research is crap, do not bother to apply again"), and her formative paper, "On the Origin of Mitosing Cells," appeared in 1967 after being rejected by about fifteen journals. Still a junior faculty at Boston University at the time, her theory that cell organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts were once independent bacteria was largely ignored for another decade, becoming widely accepted only after it was powerfully substantiated through genetic evidence. Margulis was elected a member of the US National Academy of Sciences in 1983. President Bill Clinton presented her the National Medal of Science in 1999. The Linnean Society of London awarded her the Darwin-Wallace Medal in 2008.

EXPLORE THE RI ADVENT CALENDAR: http://rigb.org.uk/advent When we're born we usually inherit our father's surname but we also inherit a rather unique type of DNA from our mothers -- mitochondrial DNA. Aoife McLysaght explains how this special genetic link can be traced back to the origins of humans, and tells the story of the remarkable female scientist who figured out where our mitochondria came from in the first place.

September 11, 2001 marked one of the most tragic days in American history. Fifteen years later, the events of that day continue to have a visceral and even traumatic impact on many Americans. Additionally, millions of Americans and citizens around the world question the official account of that day. DEMOLITION OF TRUTH presents testimony from highly-credentialed scientists, engineers, and military experts, including Dr. Robert Bowman, Dr. Lynn Margulis, Dr. Niels Harrit, and many more. This expert testimony is interwoven with analyses by social scientists who examine the psychological impact of 9/11 and the phenomena that have kept us blinded to truths too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves. The film concludes with steps we can take, individually and collectively, toward healing....
Renowned and controversial biologist Richard Dawkins is joined by other experts on evolution to debate their ideas in the bi-centennial year of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species. Lynn Margulis presents a new film on symbiogenesis in an event at the University of Oxford chaired by Prof Denis Noble.
