Visiting Kaunas, Lithuania | Travel guide from a local
Hello everyone and welcome to Kaunas - the second largest city in Lithuania. I'm so exited to make this video because I grew up in Kaunas and want to show you all what the city has to offer.
Some of the famous places are: Kaunas gothic old town and centre, Pažaislis monastery and Kaunas reservoir with a yacht club, old city funiculars, numerous museums and galleries including museum of Lithuania's most famous painter and composer M. K. Čiurlionis, and a quirky Devil's museum. In Kaunas you can also learn a lot about soviet past from its unique shops and cafes still left in the centre, and 9 fort museum which is infamous for its role in the second world war.
There is so much more in Kaunas, see the video to find out!

Kaunas: Lithuania's modernist city
As Lithuania’s second city, it’s not often Kaunas gets much international attention. This, however, could be about to change. Kaunas has been named one of Europe's Capitals of Culture for 2022; a title it’s taking seriously. Monocle visited the city to take a tour of its modernist marvels.

When you reach the town hall, I suggest going to the Church of Vytautas the great and crossing the bridge. On the other side of the river, you will find Aleksotas Funicular, which will take you up the hill to the nice viewpoint.
You can take the bus back to the airport from this bus stop.
Places to eat and drink:

In the heart of Lithuania, Kaunas is a city that might seem compact at first, but once you start discovering it, you'll realize that history is still truly alive here. Start your trip by walking through its main artery, LaisvÄ—s AlÄ—ja, while you admire its beautiful architecture, and make sure you get familiar with the delicious Lithuanian dishes and the ancient bath traditions in a city that was once the admired place of Adam Mickiewicz, too.
Lithuania’s second city, Kaunas, represents the very heart of ethnic Lithuanian identity. Less than two hours from Vilnius, it can be enjoyed as a day trip, though visitors may want to stay longer. There is no shortage of places to stay. It was relatively unscathed by World War II, and large parts of the Old City remain untouched.
During its two decades as Lithuania’s interim capital, it developed from a hugely important Russian garrison town to a European city, and many of the Functionalist buildings from that period remain. It is the major commercial center of the country, manufacturing textiles and food products, and if Vilnius now provides the country with intellectuals, Kaunas provides it with traders and businessmen.
Kaunas and Vilnius are connected by the River Neris. The point where it joins Lithuania’s major river, the Nemunas, was chosen for the siting of the original castle from where the town grew. The Nemunas, once Lithuania’s southern border, were on the German traders’ route, and Kaunas became a Hansa town.

SUMMARY:
Come and taste Lithuanian food with us!
➡ In this episode we visit Vilnius and Kaunas, Lithuania to taste the top 15 dishes — hand picked by the Lithuanian people and the Lithuanian tourism board. If you like European food, you won’t be disappointed by these traditional foods!
1 SALTIBARSCIAI (cold beetroot soup) —It’s interesting...especially what’s floating inside of the bowl! Annnnd there’s a small chance it may make your pink poop! ...don’t ask us how we know ;)
2 FRIED BREAD WITH CHEESE — This goes really well with a cold beer!
3 GIRA (kvass) — “A superior refreshment on a hot summer day
4 CEPELINAI (meat-filled potato dumplings) — Cue the drama! Watch this to see a bad breakup.
5 TINGINYS (uncooked cocoa cookie bar) — Also known as Chocolate Salami (in Italian). Plenty of chocolate, but no meat.
6 PICKLED CABBAGE SOUP — One of the best cabbage dishes we have ever tasted!
7 KASTINYS (sour cream butter) — We already like butter, but adding herbs makes it even more delicious! Plus, who doesn’t like potatoes with butter?
8 KUGELIS (potato pie/casserole) — If you like potatoes and if you like pie, then you’re destined to enjoy this Lithuanian dish.
9 APPLE “CHEESE — Looking for unique charcuterie board ideas? This is the perfect addition! Looks gross but tastes amazing.
10 BEER — Need we say more?
11 MUSHROOM SOUP — Soup in a bread bowl. Yum. Enough said!
12 HERRING WITH POTATOES — This is probably common in all of the Baltic states. And the only Lithuanian food that Jana didn’t eat. Watch to find out why…
13 BALANDELIAI (stuffed cabbage) — “Who said I don’t like cabbage?!? - Brett
14 MEAD — The only item on our list that we could not find ANYWHERE! (To the Lithuanian people who follow us on YouTube, can you tell us more about this?)
15 SAKOTIS (tree cake) — 1. It’s cake. 2. Cake ingredients include 100+ eggs. 3. Shaped like a tree. 4. Delicious!

4. Delicious!

Kaunas is a city in south-central Lithuania. At the confluence of the Neris and Nemunas rivers, Kaunas Castle is a medieval fortress housing historical exhibitions. To the east, the old town is home to the Kaunas Cathedral Basilica, with its ornate interior, and the Gothic spires of the Hanseatic House of Perkūnas. Laisvės Alėja, a pedestrianized street lined with trees and cafes, crosses the city from west to east. ― Google
