In this video I'm taking a look at the largely hidden comic book writing history of famed author Patricia Highsmith (Strangers on a Train, The Talented Mr. Ripley). The young Highsmith was one of the few women in the Golden Age of comic books, writing many titles for several companies throughout the 1940s. octal_hatch (excerpts)
octal_hatch (2003) is a series of works based on materials generated using a live video feedback system. The setup consisted two antiquated video mixers (equipped with various wipes and internal effects), assorted cameras, monitors and a laptop processing and feeding footage through itself and into the system. These source materials were then edited, layered and reprocessed using various softwares and hardware techniques.
The idea first presented itself to me when Matmos asked me to play contrabass on the track "Snails and Lasers for Patricia Highsmith" from the album "The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast". From them I got the idea of making an abstract work that had conceptual links to someone who had deeply influenced my life and work. In my case I decided to do an "abstract portrait" of the composer and architect Iannis Xenakis.
The sonic materials used in the works have direct links to Xenakis' electronic music in that they mainly use his UPIC System and an implementation of GenDy written by Alberto de Campo in the software programming language supercollider.
The UPIC sounds were generated years before, performed live to DAT tape while I was working in France as music assistant at Les Ateliers UPIC. The GenDy code uses a stochastic algorithm that Xenakis invented and called "dynamic stochastic synthesis." Also to note, currently the hardware dependent UPIC is replaced in my studio setup by the UPIX, a software only version created at CEMAMu just before they were sadly shut down.
The UPIC (an acronym of Unité Polyagogique Informatique du CEMAMu) is a drawing tablet linked to a computer, which has a vector display. The user draws waveforms and volume envelopes on the tablet, which are rendered by the computer. Once the waveforms have been stored, the user can compose with them by drawing "compositions" on the tablet, with the X-axis representing cumulative duration, and the Y-axis representing pitch. The compositions can be stretched in duration from a few seconds to an hour. They can also be transposed, reversed, inverted, and subjected to a number of algorithmic transformations. The system allows for real time performance by moving the stylus across the tablet.
The title comes from the name of one of the UPIC pages "performed" in the work, a sort of cross hatched image which to me at the time resembled an eye.
Portions of the work premiered in Bristol England as a part of the Sonic Arts Network "Connectors" event, and the parts of the version posted here was first screened at The Ninth Annual Activating The Medium Festival in San Francisco, CA.

Gabriela Adamo (Buenos Aires, 1970) es licenciada en Periodismo y trabaja desde hace más de quince años en el área editorial. Cursó estudios de postgrado en Literatura Comparada y Edición en los Estados Unidos. Fue invitada a programas profesionales en Frankfurt, Berlín y París. Fue editora en Sudamericana y Paidós y, en paralelo, trabajó como traductora del alemán y del inglés. Desde hace siete años, dirige el programa de intercambio literario Semana TyPA de Editores en Buenos Aires, coordinado por la Fundación TyPA (Teoría y Práctica de las Artes).
Ana Alcaina es licenciada en Traducción e Interpretación por la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona y traductora free-lance del inglés al castellano. En los últimos años, ha compaginado su labor como traductora con las clases como profesora asociada en diferentes programas de grado y posgrado de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. Además de realizar traducciones individuales, forma parte del colectivo de traductores Anuvela, especializado en traducciones colectivas para diversas editoriales españolas. Esta innovadora iniciativa ha merecido la atención internacional, y el colectivo Anuvela fue invitado a exponer sus métodos de trabajo en grupo en la Feria de Frankfurt del 2007 y en el Salzburg Global Seminar celebrado en Salzburgo en el 2009. Ha traducido autores de una gran diversidad de géneros, entre los que destacan James Baldwin (2005), Nancy Mitford (2005), Eoin Colfer (2001, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009) o P.D. James (2003), y otros como Ken Follett (2007) o Frederick Forsyth (2006).
Ian Barnett estudió en el St. Catherine's College en la Faculty of Modern Languages (Oxford University), donde se diplomó como Bachelor of Arts (BA). Posteriormente studio en el Institute of Lingüists de Londres, donde obtuvo un diploma en estudios de traducción del castellano al inglés. Inglés residente en la Argentina, enseña Historia de la Traducción en la Universidad de Belgrano. Como traductor al inglés realizó versiones de piezas teatrales de Rafael Spregelburd, Javier Daulte, Alejandro Tantanian y Federico León), narrativa (José Bianco, Carlos Gamerro, Osvaldo Soriano, Héctor Tizón, etc.). Asimismo publicó numerosas traducciones de historia (Félix Luna, Juan Carlos Chiaramonte, Marcela Ternavasio), estética y bellas artes (Andrea Giunta, J. B. Castagnino, Luis Príamo), entre otras disciplinas.
Julia Benseñor es traductora técnico-científica en inglés egresada del IES en Lenguas Vivas "Juan Ramón Fernández" y traductora pública en inglés, egresada de la Universidad del Museo Social Argentino. Docente de la carrera de traductorado de inglés del INES en Lenguas Vivas (1983-1996), a cargo de la cátedra de Traducción Literaria I. Actualmente, tiene a su cargo una cátedra de Residencia en la misma institución educativa. Co-fundadora del Club de Traductores Literarios de Buenos Aires, ha traducido más de veinte libros; entre otros autores, a Ray Bradbury y Saul Bellow. Obtuvo el Tercer Premio a la Traducción Científico-Técnica del Conosur 2001-2002 organizado por Unión Latina por la traducción de la obra Clonación: Objeciones Judeocristianas de Stephen Post. Trabaja como traductora freelance para organismos internacionales.
Andrés Ehrenhaus es escritor y traductor. Nacido en Buenos Aires, desde 1976 vive en Barcelona, donde es profesor del Posgrado de Traducción Literaria de la Universidad Pompeu Fabra. Integró desde el 2001 hasta el 2010 la junta directiva de la Sección de Traductores de la Asociación Colegial de Escritores de España, de la que fue vicepresidente. Ha traducido numerosos obras del inglés, tanto clásicas como contemporáneas, que abarcan autores tan diversos como Shakespeare, E. A. Poe, Oscar Wilde, Jack Kerouac, Brian Aldiss, Maurice Dantec, Guy van Sant o William Sutcliffe. Entre sus traducciones más recientes se cuenta una edición bilingüe de los Sonetos de Shakespeare (Galaxia Gutenberg/Círculo de Lectores, 2009). Es autor de tres libros de relatos: Subir arriba (1993), Monogatari (1997) y La seriedad (2001); una novela, Tratar a Fang Lo (2008); y coautor de un libro de entrevistas (El futuro es esto, 2000).
