Saving Congress from Itself: Emancipating the States & Empowering Their People
Saving Congress from Itself proposes a single reform: eliminate all federal grants-in-aid to state and local governments. This action would reduce federal spending by over $600 billion a year and have a profound effect on how we govern ourselves. The proliferation of federal grants-in-aid programs is of recent vintage: only about 100 such grants existed before Lyndon Johnson took office, and now they number more than 1,100. Eliminating grants to the states will result in enormous savings in federal and state administrative costs; free states to set their own priorities; and improve the design and implementation of programs now subsidized by W

Omri Ben-Shahar, "The Unintended Effects of Access Justice Laws"
Access Justice laws give people equal opportunity to enjoy primary goods, ensuring that access to these goods is not allocated by markets and is not tilted in favor of wealth and privilege. But Access Justice often fails to meet its egalitarian aspirations, because access and its benefits are deployed disproportionately by elites, yet paid for directly by public budgets and indirectly by weaker groups. In this lecture, Professor Ben-Shahar explains why Access Justice law can unintentionally hurt weak groups in a variety of areas — access to courts, information, insurance, internet, and many more.

Challenging the Tenure Laws in New York State
Davids vs. New York, a highly publicized lawsuit challenging New York's teacher tenure and seniority laws, is underway. Plaintiffs contend that the current laws violate children's constitutional right to a sound, basic education by keeping ineffective teachers in classrooms; defendants claim the lawsuit is a spurious attempt to destroy hard-won protections for the state's teaching profession. On March 26, we will host a discussion with lawyers who represent both sides: Devora Allon (Kirkland & Ellis) and Keith Gross (NYSUT General Counsel).

Since c. 2005 the N.S.A. has served major telecommunications companies with metadata[notes 1][2] For example Verizon Business Network Services, one of America's largest telecoms providers, was required to provide "records of millions of US customers" to the NSA.[notes 2][6] He claimed that Americans obtain the services they want by disclosing private information to strangers such as "the market services of doctors, insurance companies, Internet service providers, employers, therapists and the rest, or the nonmarket services of the government like welfare and security." He argued that, since 2001 there has not been an incident in which the United States government used information "obtained for security purposes with "war-on-terror-related surveillance" technologies to "target a political opponent, dissenter or critic."

Eliminating grants to the states will result in enormous savings in federal and state administrative costs; free states to set their own priorities; and improve the design and implementation of programs now subsidized by Washington by eliminating federal regulations that attend the grants. In short, it will free states and their subdivisions to resume full responsibility for all activities that fall within their competence, such as education, welfare, and highway construction and maintenance. And because members of Congress spend major portions of their time creating grants and allocating funds assigned to them (think earmarks), eliminating grants will enable Congress to devote its time to responsibilities that are uniquely national in character.
The Federalist Society's Practice Groups presented this closing discussion on "Saving Congress from Itself: Emancipating the States & Empowering Their People" on Saturday, November 15, during the 2014 National Lawyers Convention.

Omri Ben-Shahar earned his PhD in Economics and SJD from Harvard in 1995 and his BA and LLB from the Hebrew University in 1990. Before coming to Chicago, he was the Kirkland & Ellis Professor of Law and Economics at the University of Michigan. Prior to that, he taught at Tel-Aviv University, was a member of Israel's Antitrust Court and clerked at the Supreme Court of Israel. He teaches contracts, sales, insurance Law, consumer law, e-commerce, food and drug law, law and economics, and game theory and the law. He writes in the fields of contract law and consumer protection. He is the co-author of More Than You Wanted to Know: The Failure of Mandated Disclosure (Princeton 2014). Ben-Shahar is the Kearny Director of the Coase-Sandor Institute for Law and Economics, and the Editor of the Journal of Legal Studies. He is also the Co-Reporter with Oren Bar-Gill for the Restatement Third of Consumer Contracts.
This lecture was recorded on March 3, 2015, as part of the Chicago's Best Ideas lecture series.

The event held each year to create awareness of Lawyers' Committee for Better Housing (LCBH) and its mission to preserve affordable housing in Chicago neighborhoods and fight legal injustices that disproportionately affect low-income renters causing housing instability for many families. What better way to meet new people and expand your network than with a fun evening of food, drink and cards, all while making an important local impact!
It is truly amazing what can be accomplished when people come together to improve our community! Thank you!

Michael Klarman examines 'Racial Equality in American History'
In 2010, Prof. Michael Klarman marked his appointment as the Kirkland & Ellis Professor of Law with a lecture titled "Racial Equality in American History", a wide-ranging talk that touched upon civil rights history, legal history, and cultural history in order to uncover, as Klarman said, “the racial attitudes and practices in American history, and how and why they change over time.”

Climate Change Justice, Contract Law and Theory, Perils of Global Legalism (2011)
Eric Andrew Posner (born December 5, 1965) is Kirkland and Ellis Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. An editor of The Journal of Legal Studies, he has also published numerous articles and books on issues in international law. He is well known as the co-author of Terror in the Balance and The Executive Unbound.
He is the son of the federal appellate judge Richard Posner.
Posner attended Yale University (B.A., M.A. in philosophy, summa cum laude) and received his law degree from Harvard Law School (J.D., magna cum laude) in 1991. He clerked for Judge Stephen F. Williams of the D.C. Circuit.
A professor at the University of Chicago Law School, Posner is an editor of The Journal of Legal Studies. He has published numerous articles on subjects including international law, cost-benefit analysis, and constitutional law.
He has taught courses in international law, foreign relations law, and game theory and the law.[4] His current research focuses on international law, foreign relations law, and international tribunals.
He has written about the trial of the deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.[5]
In June 2013 Posner and Jameel Jaffer, fellow at the Open Society Foundations, participated in the New York Times's Room for Debate series. Posner responded to concerns about expanded National Security Agency programs that vacuum information about the private lives of American citizens.

Saving Congress from Itself: Emancipating the States & Empowering Their People
Saving Congress from Itself: Emancipating the States & Empowering Their People
Saving Congress from Itself proposes a single reform: eliminate all federal grants-in-aid to state and local governments. This action would reduce federal spending by over $600 billion a year and have a profound effect on how we govern ourselves. The proliferation of federal grants-in-aid programs is of recent vintage: only about 100 such grants existed before Lyndon Johnson took office, and now they number more than 1,100.

Professor Sherman Clark: Law, Policy, and Living a Full Life
Professor Sherman J. Clark talks candidly about his current research which focuses on the indirect way in which legal rules and institutions may have an impact on character, and thus on the extent to which we thrive. Clark is the Kirkland & Ellis Professor of Law.
Professor Martha S. Jones shares insights from her upcoming book, Birthright Citizens: A History of Race and Rights in Antebellum America, which explores the activism of free African Americans in the period before the U.S. Civil War and the impact that their argument for birthright citizenship had on passage of the Fourteenth Amendment. The book is due out in 2016. Jones is a member of the Law School's Affiliated LS&A; Faculty and codirector of the Michigan Law Program in Race, Law & History. She is also an associate professor of history and associate chair of U-M's Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.

2013 Hearts for Housing
The 8th annual Hearts for Housing was held on Friday, March 8, 2013 at Kirkland & Ellis. This very popular event consists of a Hearts card game tournament (for beginners or advanced players) and a large raffle with diverse and exciting prizes!
Thanks to the hard work and contributions of the Young Professionals Board, LCBH Board of Directors, sponsors, raffle donors, staff and YOU, we were able to raise over $43,000 to support program services that assist those most vulnerable in our Chicago community who are facing debilitating housing issues.
Thank you!
