Carol Burnett Awarded Mark Twain Prize For American Humor
The stars shone bright on the red carpet in Washington D.C. on Sunday night as Carol Burnett was awarded the elite Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center. Some of comedy's most popular names appeared onstage to sing Burnett's praises during the nearly two-hour long ceremony, including Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short and Vicki Lawrence. Fey called Burnett "the finest female sketch comedian in American history," and told Burnett, "I love you in a way that is just shy of creepy." Indeed, most -- if not all -- of the comedians present were inspired by Burnett's seminal variety show, "The Carol Burnett Show," which ran on Saturday nights from 1967 to 1978. In many ways the show was a predecessor of "Saturday Night Live," which spawned some of the best comedians of our time and began its legendary run in 1975. "SNL" alum Fey was honored with the Mark Twain Prize in 2010 at the tender age of 40, a fact that she still seemed astounded by. However, it was noted by Burnett on the red carpet that this was not the first time that the Kennedy Center tried to give her the prize. Scheduling never permitted it to work out until now. "I've never smoked pot, but I don't think there could be a better high," Burnett said. Other highlights of the evening included many clips of Burnett in action over the years, some good-natured roasting by Short and a touching performance of the song, "The Way You Look Tonight," by Tony Bennett. The Mark Twain Prize caps a career of prizes for Burnett. "The Carol Burnett Show" won 25 Emmys, and Burnett has received a Peabody Award, a number of Golden Globes and, in 2005, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. When Burnett finally took to the stage she had to calm the crowd, which gave her a prolonged standing ovation. When she spoke, she made it clear that her sense of humor had not dimmed with age. "This is very encouraging," she said. "It was a long time in coming, but I understand — because there are so many people funnier than I am, especially here in Washington."- published: 22 Oct 2013

Tina Fey in conversation with Steve Martin
Live Talks Los Angeles hosted Tina Fey in conversation with Steve Martin discussing her book, Bossypants, at The Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles on April 19th, 2010.
LIVE TALKS LOS ANGELES PRESENTS TINA FEY: A CONVERSATION WITH STEVE MARTIN DISCUSSING HER NEW BOOK, BOSSYPANTS
Two of America’s funniest actors and humorists take the stage in downtown Los Angeles for a rare joint appearance. Both are winners of the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for American humor named to honor America’s — and the world’s — greatest humorists.
Before Liz Lemon, before “Weekend Update,” before “Sarah Palin,” Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV.
She has seen both these dreams come true.
At last, Tina Fey’s story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon — from the beginning of this paragraph to this final sentence.
Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we’ve all suspected: you’re no one until someone calls you bossy. Includes Special, Never-Before-Solicited Opinions on Breastfeeding, Princesses, Photoshop, the Electoral Process, and Italian Rum Cake!
Actress, comedian, writer and producer, Tina Fey has received seven Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, four Screen Actors Guild Awards, and four Writers Guild of America Awards. She was singled out as the performer who had the greatest impact on culture and entertainment in 2008 by the Associated Press, which gave her its AP Entertainer of the Year award.
Fey took classes at the improvisational comedy group The Second City, where she became a featured player in 1994. Three years later, Fey became a writer for Saturday Night Live. She became head writer 1999 and the following year, Fey was added to the cast of SNL. During her time there, she was co-anchor of the show’s Weekend Update segment. After leaving SNL in 2006, she created the television series 30 Rock. She made her film debut in 2004 as writer and co-star of the teen comedy Mean Girls. In 2008, she starred in the comedy film Baby Mama, alongside Amy Poehler. In 2009, Fey won an Emmy Award for her satirical portrayal of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah in a guest appearance on SNL. In 2010, Fey was the recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for Humor, and the youngest-ever winner of the award.
Steve Martin is America’s Renaissance comedian. He is without doubt one of the most versatile and popular actors before the public, a performer with happy feet who wears many hats well beyond his signature arrow-through-the-head gear. He is a hit playwright, a reluctant literary light, an urbane and witty social commentator, an astute art collector, a mean banjo player, a dancing King Tut, an Oscar Award host, and a clown. His dashing looks landed him on People Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” List in 2003 (just barely: he was #50). He has interpreted Samuel Beckett on stage, David Mamet on screen, adapted Rostand with panache, created an unforgettable movie jerk as well as television’s most attractive wild and crazy guy, written and starred in blockbusters from Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid to L.A. Story and Shopgirl, and all the while-never taking himself too seriously-he continues to nurture his considerable gifts with tongue firmly in cheek. (Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts bio)
Steve Martin has won an Emmy Award, four Grammy Awards, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and a Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime contribution to American Culture. He has hosted the Oscars three times.
His most recent book is the novel, An Object of Beauty, and he has an upcoming banjo CD with the Steep Canyon Rangers, Rare Bird Alert, to be released on March 15. For more information on on Steve Martin, visit www.stevemartin.com.

GAY REPORT - May 17 2012
I’m TJ Chernick and welcome to this episode of the gay report:
First in the news:
Topping the news is last week’s announcement by president Barack Obama that he stands in support of Gay marriage. The president made the announcement on Wednesday for an interview on ABC after two years of stating that that his views on gay marriage were "evolving."
During the interview he discussed his Justice Department's refusal to defend DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act, declaring it unconstitutional because it declares federally, a marriage is between a man and a woman. the president also explained concern on the topic’s polarizing nature and how each state is slowly coming to the table on the debate.
The announcement has resonated into the LGBT community and was the primary topic of discussion at the center on Halsted’s Human First Gala.
Every year the center on Halsted Hosts its Gala to honor individuals, businesses and organizations who have helped strengthen Chicago’s LGBT community. This year’s gala celebrated the Centers 5 year of serving Chicago.
This year the gala presented The Community Spirit Awards to Chicago Cubs Charities, The Chicago Community Trust and Kraft Foods for their support of LGBT individuals and issues.
The gala was capped with a special appearance by Bravo’s Andy Cohen and a musical performance by K.D. Lang.
Last week, only a day after the president made his announcement to support same sex marriage Governor of Illinois, Pat Quinn officially announced that he too stands for marriage equality. The governor has always remained distant about his true opinion, even after signing the civil union’s bill into law last June. According to the Chicago Tribune, spokeswoman Mica Matsoff relayed the Governor’s strong stance saying, “"Gov. Quinn joins with President Obama in supporting marriage equality and looks forward to working on this issue in the future with the General Assembly," Despite his support, Illinois same sex marriage bill, which is pending in the state house, is not likely to get called into vote this legislative season.
GLBT Travel Expo
If you're planning on taking any vacation trips this summer, you are probably starting to make reservations now. The 2012 GLBT travel Expo was held at the Center on Halsted earlier this month, where travel vendors for air, land and sea all gathered to help you plan the perfect trip to catch some sun this summer.
In Entertainment news:
The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced Tuesday that DeGeneres will receive the 15th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor the highest award for humor in the nation. Ellen was the first character on primetime television to reveal that she was gay, and even after her show was cancelled has managed to revive her career and become one of America’s most beloved talk show hosts. She will be honored with the award on October 22 with a lineup of performers for a tribute show.
Weekend report:
NATO starts this weekend so getting downtown may be an issue, but I’ve got a few ideas of things to do in this edition of the weekend report.
If Bollywood music gets you on your feet, then head to Big Chicks this Friday for Jai Ho: Return from Vagistan: an All Queer, All Bollywood night from 10pm to 2 am. a $5 suggested donation will go towards Trikone-Chicago, a group for South Asian and Desi people in chicago and midwest who identify as LGBTQ Kothi, Hidrah or questioning. Visit Trikonechicago.org.
The Dog Days are not over at Sidetrak this weekend as it presents Dog Day Saturday afternoon from 2-5pm to celebrate your four-legged friend. With drinks, prizes and treats, bring your pooch to Sidetracks courtyard to hang with the other dogs of boystown and their pets. First 25 guests will get a gift bag from Paradise 4 Paws.
And on Sunday you may want to plan ahead for next weekend as Chicago’s second most international event outside of NATO comes to Chicago. International Mr. Leather. If you plan on attending get your tickets fast at IMRL.com. And if leather is not your thing, don’t worry there is plenty going on and I’ll be back next week with some tips on what to see and do.
Thats all for this episode of the gay report. Join me again next week for more news and events affecting your world. And thank you to everyone who has been liking us on Facebook and emailing me tips at TJ@gaychicagotv.com I love hearing from you. So until next time, stay proud chicago.

53rd Journalism Awards Gala (part 1)
A. JOURNALISTS OF THE YEAR
A1. PRINT (Over 50,000 circulations)
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly
Comments: "Range" is an appropriate middle name. What incredibly
detailed reporting on a variety of complicated topics. What an ability to
make us feel as if we know the players. What skill in explaining messy
situations. The very essence of solid journalism.
2nd place: David Evans, Bloomberg Markets, "Duping the Families of
Fallen Soldiers"
HM: Mariel Garza, Los Angeles Daily News Editorials
A2. PRINT (Under 50,000 circulation)
Radley Balko, Reason Magazine
Comment: ―Radley Balko is one of those throw-back journalists that
understands the power of groundbreaking reporting and how to make a
significant impact through his work. Time and time again, his stories cause
readers to stop, think, and most significantly, take action.
Congratulations!‖
2nd Place: Dan Evans, Glendale News-Press
HM: Ryan Vaillancourt, Los Angeles Downtown News
A3. TELEVISION JOURNALIST
Ana Garcia and Fred Mamoun, KNBC-TV
Garcia and Mamoun shoot, write and edit compelling stories. One of
their strengths as a team is the obvious respect for their subjects, and the
ability through contacts in the community to land exclusive interviews and
opportunities. They are strong storytellers and the pieces move!
2nd Place: Antonio Valverde, Univision
Valverde has a wide range as a journalist. He is able to work with various
segments of the community to tell compelling stories. He has political
acumen and can accurately and fairly tell stories, while also reaching out
to the disenfranchised to share their stories of life in L.A.
A4. RADIO JOURNALIST
Susan Valot, KPCC
Comments: Well-rounded reports with authoritative, informed tone. Great
use of sound. Valot‘s work is some of the best we‘ve heard.
2nd Place: Brian Watt: KPCC
HM: Kitty Felde: KPCC
A5. ONLINE JOURNALIST
Daniel Heimpel, FosteringMediaConnections.org
2nd Place: Chris Hedges, Truthdig.com
HM: Robert Scheer, Truthdig.com
A6. SPORTS JOURNALIST
N/A
A7. ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST
Kim Masters, KCRW-FM Radio
Comments: Nice voice in both senses of the word, along with substantive
content. Covering a story about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, she
tracked down Plame to comment on her portrayal, rather than just talking
to the actress. She also gave a lot of information on entertainment agents
that broadened the picture the public was likely to have of that
occupation.
2nd Place: Tara Wallis-Finestone, NBC LA
HM: George Pennacchio, KABC-TV
A8. PHOTO JOURNALIST
Rick Loomis, Los Angeles Times
A9. DESIGNER
N/A
B. DAILY/WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS
Over 50,000 circulations – including news bureaus and correspondents
B1. HARD NEWS
Tracy Manzer and Sarah Peters, Long Beach Press-Telegram, "Heroes foil
bank heist"
Comments: The writing was appropriately-paced for the category and
the story content. I enjoyed the writers' use of sensory details and factual
information, presented with a slightly humorous/sarcastic tone that made
this piece fun to read.
B2. NEWS FEATURE
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly, ―The Parent Trigger‖.
Comments: Documents a groundswell of democracy while explaining a
new law through a real-world prism. Powerful. Incredibly well-sourced and
informative, yet provides a human touch. The story of poor minorities trying
to make a change documented how the masses can move the
establishment. Inspiring to others, this story shows what newspaper do like
no other. Bravo.
2nd Place: Thomas Curven, Los Angeles Times, ―Walking Away from Grief‖
HM: Kristopher Hanson, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Dangers Close to
Home‖
B3. PERSONALITY PROFILE
Steve Friess, LA Weekly, ―A Tragic Love Story‖
2nd Place: Charlotte Hsu, LA Weekly, ―Forever Scared — The Story of
Herman Atkins‖
HM: Karen Robes Meeks, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Murchison: A
Portrait of a Long Beach Lobbyist‖
B4. INVESTIGATIVE/SERIES
David Evans, Bloomberg News, "Fallen Soldiers' Families Denied Cash
Payout as Insurers Profit"
Comments: These articles are the soul of great investigative journalism,
uncovering a shocking system whereby the families of slain soldiers are
tricked about benefits, and where shameless insurance companies reap
big profits at the expense of those families.
Best of all, it led to immediate Congressional investigations and action.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "The Dance of the Lemons"
HM: Monica Alonzo and Simone Wilson, LA Weekly, "Culture of Cruelty"
B5. BUSINESS
Alana Semuels, Los Angeles Times, "California unfriendly to business?
Figures say no"
Comments: This is an authoritative and well-documented piece that
refutes the common wisdom of California's tax structure being unfriendly
to business.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "Barry Minkow 2.0"
