Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born 30 March 1945), is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist and separately as a member of the Yardbirds and Cream. Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. Clapton ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and fourth in Gibson's "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time". He was also named number five in Time magazine's list of "The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players" in 2009.
In the mid-1960s, Clapton left the Yardbirds to play blues with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop". Furthermore, he formed blues rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech. For most of the 1970s, Clapton's output bore the influence of the mellow style of JJ Cale and the reggae of Bob Marley. His version of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" helped reggae reach a mass market. Two of his most popular recordings were "Layla", recorded with Derek and the Dominos; and Robert Johnson's "Crossroads", recorded with Cream. Following the death of his son Conor in 1991, Clapton's grief was expressed in the song "Tears in Heaven", which featured in his Unplugged album.
"Driftin' Blues" or "Drifting Blues" is a blues standard that was recorded by Johnny Moore's Three Blazers in 1945. The song is a slow blues and features Charles Brown's smooth, soulful vocals and piano. It was one of the biggest blues hits of the 1940s and "helped define the burgeoning postwar West Coast blues style". "Driftin' Blues" has been interpreted and recorded by numerous artists in a variety of styles. The Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have acknowledged the song's influence and lasting popularity.
In an interview, Brown described "Driftin' Blues" as "the first song that I wrote down and tried to sing". Music critic Dave Marsh adds that Brown wrote it while still in high school.Rhythm and blues singer Johnny Otis, who was in Bardu Ali's band with Brown in Los Angeles in the early 1940s, recalled that Brown was reluctant to record the song. Brown's inspiration for the tune was a gospel song his grandmother had taught him and he felt conflicted about mixing gospel and blues; Otis and others helped convince him to go ahead with it. Another earlier blues song, "Walking and Drifting Blues", recorded by Bumble Bee Slim in 1935, uses the line "Now I'm driftin', like a ship without a sail". Music writer Bryan Grove notes that Brown's original working title for the song was the same and although he was influenced by Slim's lyrics, the songs are otherwise dissimilar.
Blues is a genre and musical form that originated in African-American communities in the "Deep South" of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The genre developed from roots in traditional African music, combined with European American folk music. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll, is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, the blues scale and specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. The blue notes (or "worried notes") which are often thirds or fifths which are flatter in pitch than in other music styles, are also an important part of the sound. Blues shuffles or walking bass reinforce the trance-like rhythm and form a repetitive effect called a groove.
Blues as a genre possesses other characteristics such as lyrics, bass lines, and instruments. The lyrics of early traditional blues verses consisted of a single line repeated four times. It was only in the first decades of the 20th century that the most common current structure became standard: the so-called AAB pattern, consisting of a line sung over the four first bars, its repetition over the next four, and then a longer concluding line over the last bars. Early blues frequently took the form of a loose narrative, often relating troubles experienced within African American society.
Brilliantly performed acoustic version of Drifting Blues. Played by a 63 year old Clapton at the Hard Rock Calling Festival on 28th June 2008 in Hyde Park, London. Pro shot video clip with excellent audio quality. It was an unforgettable day and my first chance to see Mr Clapton live.

Delving into our archives we’re happy to release for the very first time this full interview with world famous blues musician Eric Bibb. In the blues, a guitar can be as famous as the man who played it. B.B. King has Lucille, the curvy hollow-bodied Gibson electric he caresses in concert. Clapton calls his Stratocaster, Blackie. Then there’s the legendary National steel guitar of early Delta bluesman Booker White, a peer of blues pioneer Robert Johnson. In this previously unreleased film, Eric discusses and plays the instrument described by B.B King as a “holy relic” and known simply as Hard Rock. The guitar found its way into Eric’s arms, in a story that is as legendary as Robert Johnson at the crossroads, as old as the blues itself. A traveling musician has a chance encounter in th...

I'm driftin' and driftin', like a ship out on the sea
I'm driftin' and driftin', like a ship out on the sea
Nobody seems to want me
Except the wide and open sea
My ship ain't got no captain, my ship ain't got no crew
My ship ain't got no captain, my ship ain't got no crew
Doin' that tide dare blow me and my past and future too
I look around for a savior to search me from the hungry sea
I look around for a savior to search me from the hungry sea
