Twan Russell

Twan Sanchez Russell (born April 25, 1974) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League for the Washington Redskins, the Miami Dolphins, and the Atlanta Falcons. He played college football at the University of Miami.

High school

Russell attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School, where he played football. He also participated in track and field, where he won the State Championship in the 300-meter hurdles.

College career

Russell then received a scholarship to play for the Miami Hurricanes where he led the team in tackles (115) and was named Special teams Captain.

Russell graduated with degrees in Broadcast communications and Criminology.

Professional career

Russell was drafted in the fifth round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. He would also play for the Miami Dolphins and the Atlanta Falcons before retiring from injury in November 2004.

After football

After football, Russell created the Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation, Inc. The Foundation currently serves more than 450 youth in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties annually.

Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins are a professional American football franchise located in the Miami metropolitan area. The Dolphins are a member of the East division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Dolphins play their home games at Sun Life Stadium in the northern suburb of Miami Gardens, and have their headquarters in Davie, Florida. The Dolphins and the Atlanta Falcons (who also began play in 1966) are the oldest NFL franchises in the Deep South, and Miami is the oldest AFC team in that region. However, of the four AFC East teams, they are the only team in the division that was not a charter member of the AFL.

The Dolphins team was founded by attorney/politician Joe Robbie and actor/comedian Danny Thomas. They began play in the American Football League in 1966. The region had not had a professional football team since the days of the Miami Seahawks, who played in the All-America Football Conference in 1946 before becoming the first incarnation of the Baltimore Colts. For the first few years the Dolphins full-time training camp and practice facilities were at Saint Andrew's School, a private boys boarding prep school in Boca Raton. In 1970 the Dolphins joined the NFL when the AFL–NFL merger occurred.

Dan Marino

Daniel Constantine Marino, Jr. (born September 15, 1961) is a former American Football player who was a quarterback for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). The last quarterback of the Quarterback Class of 1983 to be taken in the first round, Marino held or currently holds dozens of NFL records associated with the quarterback position. Despite never being on a Super Bowl-winning team, he is recognized as one of the greatest quarterbacks in American football history. Best remembered for his quick release and powerful arm, Marino led the Dolphins to the playoffs ten times in his seventeen-season career. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005.

He led the Miami Dolphins to an AFC championship in the 1984 season, only his second season in the NFL. During that year, he threw a then-NFL record 48 touchdown passes. Despite the 14–2 season and Marino's touchdown record, the Dolphins lost Super Bowl XIX 38–16 to the 15–1 San Francisco 49ers.

Early years

South Florida

South Florida is a region of the U.S. state of Florida, it comprises the southernmost part of the state. It is one of Florida's three most common "directional" regions, the others being Central Florida and North Florida. It includes the populous Miami metropolitan area, the Florida Keys, and other localities. South Florida is the only part of the continental United States with a tropical climate.

Area

As with all vernacular regions, South Florida has no official boundaries or status, and is defined differently by different sources. A 2007 study of Florida's regions by Ary Lamme and Raymond K. Oldakowski found that Floridians surveyed identified "South Florida" as comprising the southernmost sections of peninsular Florida. This area includes the Miami metropolitan area (generally defined as Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties), the Florida Keys, and the interior region known as the Glades. Additionally, South West Florida, representing the state's southern Gulf Coast, has emerged as a directional vernacular region. Some respondents from as far northwest as the southern Tampa Bay area identified their region as being in South Florida rather than South West or Central Florida.
