That Gang of Mine is a 1940 film and the third film in the East Side Kids series Old horseman Ben (Clarence Muse) brings his beloved thoroughbred Bluenight to New York from Kentucky in hopes of developing him into a championship racer. Because the old man is down on his luck, the East Side boys offer to provide a makeshift quarters for Bluenight, and Algy Wilkes (Eugene Francis) persuades his father (Milton Kibbee) to put up the entrance fee for the horse. Muggs Maloney (Leo Gorcey), an aspiring but untested jockey, rides Bluenight in the race, but loses his nerve on the track, causing Bluenight to trail in the field. Seated in the stands is Morgan (Forrest Taylor), a respected trainer, who recognizes the horse's ability and urges Mr. Wilkes to race the horse with an experienced jockey. However, Muggs insists upon doing the riding, and his pals induce Mr. Wilkes to give him another chance. Complications arise the night before the race when Nick (Wilbur Mack), a crooked bookie, tries to sabotage Bluenight. The boys discover the plot and save the horse, but the next day, Muggs realizes that he cannot guide the horse to victory. With the use of his fists, he convinces jockey Jimmy Sullivan (Nick Wall) to take his place, and Bluenight finishes the race the winner.

Mr. Wise Guy is a 1942 American film starring The East Side Kids and directed by William Nigh. In New York, the East Side youth gang, consisting of Muggs McGinnis (Leo Gorcey), Danny Collins (Bobby Jordan), Glimpy Stone (Huntz Hall), Scruno (Ernest Morrison), Skinny (Bill Lawrence), and Peewee (David Gorcey), are falsely arrested on the wharf because the truck they are playing in was stolen. They are remanded to Wilton Reform School, where Muggs, the wise-cracking leader of the gang, is dubbed "Mr. Wise Guy" by the brutal guard Jed Miller (Dick Ryan). Jim Barnes (Jack Mulhall), the new warden, reassures Danny's older brother Bill (Douglas Fowley), who has bad memories of the school from when he served as a guard there, that his testimony describing the place's cruelty eventually resulted in the dismissal of the former warden and the adoption of gentler rules. Bill is given a tour of the school by Barnes's secretary, Ann Mitchell (Joan Barclay), and later takes her out to dinner. That night, while Bill buys cigarettes in a drugstore, escaped convict Luke Manning (Guinn Williams) robs the place and murders the clerk. Manning takes Bill hostage in his car and forces him to lead the police on a chase. Manning escapes when Bill crashes the car, and Bill is later convicted of robbery and murder and sentenced to execution. In the reform school, the boys have been battling with two toughs, "Rice Pudding" Charlie(Gabriel Dell) and Chalky Jones (Bobby Stone), but when Barnes witnesses Miller encouraging a fistfight, he demands Miller's resignation. Chalky tries to get the kids in trouble by informing Barnes of their plans to run away, but in an effort to establish a code of honor, Barnes punishes Chalky for being an informer. When Muggs and his pals see newsreel footage of a man and woman accepting the winnings from a lottery, they recognize the man as Knobby (Billy Gilbert), the driver of the stolen truck. They link Knobby to Manning based on information given to them by Charlie, who is Manning's nephew. Armed with information that could prove Bill's innocence, the boys escape from the reform school and go to the apartment of Dorothy Melton (Ann Doran), the woman from the newsreel. The kids hold the pair, who had been planning to leave town with the lottery money which actually belongs to Manning, who was afraid of being seen. Manning appears at Dorothy's apartment to demand his money and hits Dorothy for double-crossing him with Knobby. Before the situation can worsen, the police arrive and arrest the criminals. Bill gets a reprieve from the governor, and Ann and the boys see him off as he reports for active military duty.

Flying Wild is a 1941 film and the fifth installment of the East Side Kids series. While pals Skinny (Donald Haines), Danny Graham (Bobby Jordan), Peewee (David Gorcey), Algy Reynolds (Eugene Francis), and Scruno (Sunshine Sammy Morrison) all work at the Reynolds Aviation Company, which is run by Algy's father (Herbert Rawlinson), Muggs (Leo Gorcey), the only one of the kids who refuses to work, spends his time flirting with an ambulance nurse named Helen (Joan Barclay). Helen, though, is in love with her test pilot boyfriend Tom (Dave O'Brien). One day, when Tom's plane crashes onto the plant airstrip, Reynolds suspects that the crash may have been the work of saboteurs. Later, on the airfield tarmac, Muggs jokingly appoints himself as the new operator of Dr. Richard Nagel (George Pembroke)'s ambulance plane and gives his pals a tour of the aircraft. Their playful games are soon brought to a halt by Nagel, the secret leader of a spy ring, who catches the boys on his plane and angrily orders them off. Mr. Reynolds, certain that spies are working at the plant, asks Danny to act as a decoy so that the spies can be identified, and has him deliver to a downtown office a fake set of plans for a new bomb site. As Reynolds predicted, Nagel's men ambush Danny on his way to the office, but the plan goes awry when the detectives sent to trail Danny lose him. Danny eventually turns up unharmed some time later. When Muggs reports to Reynolds his suspicions that Nagel is behind the espionage ring, Reynolds dismisses the accusation as a product of the boy's imagination. Not convinced by Reynolds that Nagel is innocent, Muggs and Danny begin their own investigation into Nagel, starting with a visit to the doctor on the pretext of a fake ailment. The visit turns up nothing, however, and when Danny and Muggs return to the hangar, a suspicious "accident" that was apparently meant to harm them leaves Peewee injured. While Peewee recovers at the hospital, Tom nearly loses his life when he is unable to make contact with the control tower for a landing. The controller is later found bound and gagged in the tower, prompting the kids to resume their investigation in earnest. Helen provides the gang with further clues when she confirms that the ambulance plane was being flown on many unusual trips to Mexico, supposedly to deliver patients. When Helen tells the East Side Kids that a man named Forbes is the next "patient" to be transported, they rush to his house, where they find secret plans hidden in his head bandage. Disguising Danny as the transportee, the kids send Danny and Muggs on the flight to learn who is behind the espionage ring. Danny and Muggs soon find themselves in trouble, however, when Nagel, having found Forbes locked in his closet, tries to warn the pilot of the boys' ruse. Meanwhile, Tom learns of the dangerous mission and goes after the ambulance plane in his own plane. Tom arrives in Mexico in time to save Danny and Muggs, and all the spies are arrested. Back at the plant, Reynolds rewards Muggs for his heroism by giving him a job, but his stint there is short-lived as he is soon distracted by a pretty woman and crashes a plane.

Smart Alecks (1942) After the Broadway play Dead End became a huge hit in 1935, the six teen stars (Leo Gorcey, his brother David, Huntz Hall, Billy Halop, Bobby Jordan, Charles Duncan and Gabriel Dell) were brought to Hollywood to make the film version for MGM, which premiered in 1937. The movie was also a big hit, but the young stars had run rampant on the lot, getting into mischief and tearing stuff up, so producer Sam Goldwyn sold their contracts to Warner Brothers, where they made six more movies with stars like John Garfield, James Cagney, and Humphrey Bogart. By this time other studios in Hollywood were noticing the popularity of these films and when the Warners contract ended, the boys split and some were snapped up by Universal for the Little Tough Guys series and others were grabbed by Monogram for the Dead End Kids movies. By the mid 40's the two groups had made more than 35 movies and 3 cliffhanger serials! In 1946 Leo Gorcey and his agent revamped the Dead End kids into The Bowery Boys, which lasted through 48 (!) more movies through 1958! This effort is one of the East Side Kids entries, which were a mix of comedy and melodrama. This time out the boys (including Gorcey, Hall, Dell, and original Our Gang star Sunshine Sammy Morrison) want to buy some baseball uniforms to give their sandlot team some oomph, but as usual have no money. Before long they are mixed up with a gang of bank robbers led by former boxing champ Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom and have to save one of their own members and his comely nurse sister from Maxie's revenge plans. As usual, Gorcey mangles the English language, Hall gets in some funny shtick, Morrison tap dances for everybody, and the movie veers back and forth from light comedy to syrupy melodrama, but it's short (just over an hour) and Gorcey and Hall are always worth a look, so this one gets a recommendation for those so inclined.

After the Dead End Kids and before the Bowery Boys, there were the East Side Kids: Leo "Muggs" Gorcey, Huntz "Glimpy" Hall, and Bobby "Danny" Jordan-along with Ernie "Sunshine Sammy" Morrison as "Scruno," the token black member of the gang-starred in a series of rough-and-tumble action-comedies set in New York's Lower East Side (but actually shot at the lowly Monogram Pictures studio in Hollywood) that combined the dramatics of the Dead End films with the knockabout slapstick of the Bowery epics. These cheaply produced, quickly made films (in which much of the dialogue was improvised) proved popular with moviegoers and were run repeatedly on local TV stations for years. If nothing else, the East Side Kids movies were a product of their era, which is why, in these Politically Correct times, you're not likely to see LET'S GET TOUGH! (1942) turn up on television anytime soon. In this flag-waving World War II entry, the East Side Kids tangle with a Japanese spy ring that has ties to Nazi infiltrators. As you might expect, the racial epithets fly fast and free, though perhaps no moreso than any other patriotic war-themed production of the '40s. This Alpha Video edition is typical of many of the East Side Kids movies available on DVD: transferred from a used 16mm print (splices, scratches), with scenes edited out (for TV?). There's no "Digital Restoration" going on here. The East Side Kids movies are, at best, a pleasant diversion, though they were never as funny as the later Bowery Boys efforts. LET'S GET TOUGH! is not one of the better ESK entries; fans of this team will want to see it, but it's of little interest to anyone else.

PLOT Members of the New York City East Side boys club--leader Muggs (Leo Gorcey), Danny (Bobby Jordan), Glimpy (Huntz Hall), Scruno(Sunshine Sammy Morrison), Skinny (Donald Haines), and Peewee (David Gorcey)--reluctantly board a bus bound for summer camp. The bus stops in the town of Hillside, where Muggs and his pals flirt with Margie, a soda fountain waitress (Rosemary Portia). While they are there, a radio broadcast announces that a maniacal monster killer is in the area. When they arrive at the camp, the counselor, Jeff Dixon (Dave OBrien), complains to his girlfriend, camp nurse Linda Mason (Dorothy Short), that he will get no work done on his thesis because of the rowdy juvenile delinquents. One night, Nardo (Bela Lugosi), a mysterious caped figure, and his dwarf assistant, Luigi (Angelo Rossitto), ask a local gas station attendant for directions to the hilltop Billings house, which has been deserted for years since its owner was murdered. After he leaves, another car arrives and the attendant recognizes the driver from his mystery magazines as Dr. Von Grosch (Dennis Moore). The attendant believes that Nardo is the killer and Von Grosch is hunting him, and he alerts the local constable that Nardo is a suspect. One night, Nardo and Luigi sneak into the local graveyard and are shot at by a grave digger. That same night, Muggs slips out of camp hoping to rendezvous with the soda fountain girl, and is followed by all his pals. The East Side Kids get lost in the woods, and when they wander into the graveyard, Peewee is also shot by the digger. The boys take Peewee to the nearby Billings house, where Nardo tends to his minor injury and gives him a sedative. Nardo lets the boys spend the night, but Peewee disappears while sleepwalking. The rest of the boys are unable to sleep because of Nardos strangeness and Peewees disappearance. Linda, meanwhile, also disappears while out searching for the boys, and Jeff goes to the police for help. When the boys confront Nardo, he claims not to know where Peewee is, but insists that the boys remain in the house. Muggs distrusts Nardo and on his command, the boys attack him and roll him into a carpet. Skinny and Glimpy disappear through a secret passage, and Scruno is spooked when Nardo reappears. At constable Jims office, the grave digger recalls seeing the boys, and Jim believes they may have fallen into the killers hands at the Billings estate. The boys, meanwhile, search for Peewee, but are continually being surprised by the appearance of coffins and objects that move themselves, and by the disappearance of their pals through walls and closets. Linda, meanwhile, accepts a ride from Von Grosch, who takes her to the Billings house, ostensibly to help the boys. Muggs and the boys succeed in terrifying Nardo by pretending to be a ghost, and they finally find Peewee back in bed. Just after Linda and Von Grosch arrive at the house, Von Grosch attacks Linda. The police burst in and accuse Nardo of being a killer, but Muggs has already learned that Nardo is merely a magician. Ghosts on the Loose is a 1943 American film and the fourteenth film in the East Side Kids series, directed by William Beaudine. The film was released in the United Kingdom as Ghosts in the Night When Glimpy (Huntz Hall)'s sister Betty (Ava Gardner) marries Jack (Rick Vallin), Muggs (Leo Gorcey) singlehandedly organises the wedding. The gang provide a choral version of Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes as well as organ music. Scruno (Sammy Morrison), Stash (Stanley Clements) and Benny (Billy Benedict) provide a floral centrepiece by borrowing a funeral wreath meant for a murdered gangster's funeral on the morrow. Danny (Bobby Jordan) and Rocky (Bobby Stone) also borrow the deceased gangster's tuxedo prior to his funeral for Glimpy who is the best man. Scruno's mother provides rice to throw that she has cooked to make extra soft. Muggs also organises a police escort by telling the police gangsters will try and break up the wedding with Glimpy adlibbing they are the notorious Katzman Gang, (the producer of the film series). On this happy day only one thing is slightly bothering Jack. The house he has purchased is well below the market value due to rumours that the house next door is a haunted house. The house next door is actually used by a German spy ring led by Emil (Bela Lugosi). Emil is furious that his minion has sold the neighbouring house to Jack as it will be needed for future activities as both houses are connected by secret tunnels. Emil orders his minion, Tony (Wheeler Oakman) to buy it back from Jack. Jack is mystified by the reasons for the house being wanted by another party. Jack does accept the money for the sale where the minion gives him a note with the address of the neighbouring "haunted" house where he can be reached. On his way to their honeymoon Jack drops the note with the address of the neighbouring house. Muggs picks up the address thinking it is the house that Jack and Betty are moving into and decides to surprise the couple by having the gang clean and tidy the house before the couple arrive. At the Honeymoon Hotel Jack is given an urgent message to contact the party who originally sold him the house. The wife (Blanche Payson) is worried about the strange activities in the house next door to the house Jack bought leading to the haunted rumours. She wishes to warn Jack and she also telephones the police to investigate. Jack and Betty drive to their house to get to the bottom of the rumours. When the gang goes to the wrong house that is occupied by the Nazi spies, Emil and his gang pull out all stops to scare the boys into believing the house is haunted. The scheme backfires when the boys hide in the cellar where they discover a printing press with leaflets from the New Order entitled "How to destroy the Allies". As Jack and Betty and the police arrive the gang takes on Emil and his spy ring. In the end, Betty, Jack, and the East Side Kids are all forced to spend the newlyweds' Honeymoon stuck in their new home when Glimpy comes down with German Measles (his face is decorated with swastikas).
