In Cairo some time in the next few hours, the Australian journalist Peter Greste and his two colleagues from the Al Jazeera English network will go before a court for the first time to face charges including broadcasting false information to defame and destabilise Egypt. West Australians are heading back to the polls in what will be only the second time ever that a state has voted alone for the Senate. The Court of Disputed Returns today declared the September Senate election void, after the Australian Electoral Commission lost 1,370 ballot papers. The Prime Minister will choose an election date and the WA Governor will issue the writs for the election, which is likely to be held before July. More

The number of people killed in violence in the Ukraine capital Kiev has risen to 28, and almost 300 people are still in hospital being treated for injuries sustained during clashes between riot police and protesters. The violence saw the Ukrainian government declare plans to impose a state of emergency last night.

The child abuse Royal Commission has heard more excuses about why senior Catholic Education staff didn't report allegations of child sexual abuse by a teacher to police. Christopher Fry was in charge of child protection at a Toowoomba primary school when 13 girls were sexually abused by Gerard Byrnes in 2007 and 2008. He's blamed workplace stress for not protecting students. More

The Federal Health Minister Peter Dutton says Australians should have a frank and fearless discussion about the health system and how we pay for it. In particular he's flagged the idea of a co-payment for wealthier Australians. One of the architects of the system has told PM there's a simple and more equitable way of raising money to pay for health: increase the Medicare Levy. More
