And while they totally look like underwater snakes, eels are, in fact, unique fish that can breathe through their skin and even survive out of water. James Prosek tracks the life journey of Eli the Anguilla eel as she (yes, she) travels her mysterious "backward" migration from the sea to fresh water and back again. No easy task, the annual journey is dangerous to birds due to landscape change -- so much so, that only half the birds that migrate south will return home for spring. Alyssa Klavans details why bird migration is so taxing and how we can assist our chirping friends. Lesson by Alyssa Klavans, animation by Igor Coric.- published: 17 Sep 2013

Niyazi Erdoğan | AW 2011-2012 DOLMUSH
Dolmush is originated from our creative ideas on public transportation culture. Neither private as a cab/taxi nor collective as a bus.It is not as old as a steamship and nor thorny as trolley-.bus.
Dolmush, actually, is an unofficial history of street . I said history since it was a self-solution of public against the unsufficient public transportation system after the heavy migration period and it has expanded by time.
The voice of street has whispered an identity which is figured by the process of change and innovationto my ear. The identity which finds itself slowly and also struggling to continue it's belonging in other cities within urban atmosphere.
70's was a breaking point when it comes to social and economical aspects of life. The arabesque culture has become very essential tool in the city with the changing transportation network by the opening of Bosphorus Bridge , the chaos between urban and rural areas and the Western music played by Eastern instument called "saz".
I wanted to go back to those years and remember an almost vanishing memory with my 2011/2012 F/Wcollection and named it as "DOLMUSH".My starting point was this era's dolmush like Desoto,Platmouth,Dodge,Chevrolet,Buick etc. The I thought of the drivers of these vehicles. Those Istanbul gentlemen and their children whose ages younger than their cars.Their way of dressing, the sportsmanship with alittle touch of naughtiness, the slang, the gestures and the mimic they use. And of course the moustaches they wear.
I carried those days' well known forms with the twist of today's point of view to my collection.Wide cuffed trousers, sharp heavy knit jumpers, tops with round lines. Oil treated wash effects was a polish on the garments and aphorisms were the last re-touches.
Now I am infront of you with my collection which the whole motto can be felt on every single stitches of the collection as it was said behinf of a dolmush "not inherited but sweat blood".

Powderfinger Empty Space
Synopsis :
It is the migration period. Two species of birds are gradually making their way to a far away promised land.
An heron and a flamingo, torn by their recent separation, end up by coincidence in opposite waiting lines of the “migration center’s”
departure hall. After an agitated chase amongst the crowded queue the two faded lovers finally manage to make eye contact on the takeoff runway.
A last minute exchange of glances for a new start to life.
This previously unreleased song by Powderfinger is their last ever single and music video to be released on the special album: Footprints: The Best Of Powderfinger (2001-2011).
Animated using a combination of cut-out papers traditional animation and digital tools we aimed at creating an interesting look that accompanies the narrative throughout the emotional arc of the song.

Taxi!
Taxi! is an analytical model that maps the trip data for 10,000 taxi rides over the course of 24 hours. Geographic location data for the origin and destination of each ride is combined with waypoint data collected from the Google Maps API in order to generate a geographically accurate representation of the trip. We used data from taxi rides originating or ending in the neighborhoods of Lincoln center or Bryant Park. The visualization recreates a ‘breathing’ map of Manhattan based on the migration of vehicles across the city over a period of 24 hours, displaying periods of intensity, density and decreased activity.
This project was a collaboration between Tom McKeogh, Eliza Montgomery and Juan F Saldarriaga. It was done for SEARCH class taught by Mark Collins and Toru Hasegawa (Proxy), at GSAPP, Columbia University, Fall 2011.
We acknowledge the support of the CUNY High Performance Computing Center under NSF Grants No. CNS-0855217 and No. CNS-0958379.

RIDDLE OF STEEL: Secrets of the Viking Sword (720p)
WATCH PLAYLIST https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kBNT5t5rd8&list;=PLRPW3IFnQj1x17hRePWRYDaq7DEajSW98 The Viking sword was the primary weapon of the Viking. It was a development of the Roman spatha, evolving out of the Migration Period sword in the 8th century, and into the classical knightly sword in the 11th century with the emergence of larger cross-guards. The Viking swords were pattern welded which gave the blade extra strength as the core was made of springy iron and edge of hard steel. Of particular note is the "Ulfberht" subset, which used steel of higher purity and carbon content than its peers in the region that may have been imported in ingot. Blade length varied from 71 to 84 centimetres. Early examples have single, deep, wide fullers running the full length of the blade. Later examples have multiple narrow fullers. A fuller reduces the weight of the blade without compromising its strength. This weight reduction would allow the wielder to swing faster and harder strokes. Later swords also had more tapered points for increased effectiveness against chain mail. All have short single-handed hilts with pyramid, lobed or cocked-hat style pommels. Pommels were made of iron and were heavier than on the earlier Migration Period sword.- published: 01 Dec 2013
