8-24-1936 The Australian Antarctic Territory is created
The Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) is the part of Antarctica claimed by Australia and is the largest territory of Antarctica claimed by any nation. The claim is formally recognised by only four states, each of which also has a claim over part of the Antarctic.[1] AAT consists of all the islands and territory south of 60°S and between 45°E and 160°E, except for Adélie Land (136°E to 142°E), which divides the territory into Western AAT (the larger portion) and Eastern AAT. It is bounded by Queen Maud Land in the West and by Ross Dependency in the East. The area is estimated at 5,896,500 km².[1] The territory is inhabited only by the staff of research stations. The Australian Antarctic Division administers the area primarily by maintaining three year-round stations (Mawson, Davis and Casey), which support various research projects.- published: 24 Aug 2010

Sea Shepherd activists release whale hunt video as clash begins in Southern Ocean
ANTI-WHALING activists have released graphic footage of whales being killed by the Japanese fleet in the Southern Ocean, renewing calls for the Government to come good on its promise to monitor operations. The Sea Shepherd conservation group said it had located all five vessels of the Japanese whaling fleet including factory ship the Nisshin Maru inside the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary on the weekend. Sea Shepherd vessels the Steve Irwin, Bob Barker and Sam Simon are now in pursuit of the whaling fleet, attempting to disrupt the hunt. The Steve Irwin's helicopter first located the Nisshin Maru in New Zealand's sovereign waters in the Ross Dependency Antarctic region. Sea Shepherd says its footage, pictured, shows three dead minke whales on the deck of the Nisshin Maru. A fourth whale, also believed to be a minke, was being cut up on the bloodstained deck. Sea Shepherd Australia chairman Bob Brown described the whale slaughter as barbaric. "It's just a gruesome, bloody, medieval scene that has no place in this modern world," he said. "What's missing from this scene is the promised customs vessel from the Abbott Government, they promised that pre-election. They've since reneged on that promise but said there would be a monitoring aircraft, there's no sign of that aircraft over the international whale sanctuary where this slaughter has been taking place." Greens spokesman for whaling, Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, reiterated calls for Environment Minister Greg Hunt to do something. "After six years of rhetoric from Greg Hunt calling on the previous government to stop the blood in the water in the Southern Ocean it is time for him to act," said Senator Whish-Wilson.- published: 06 Jan 2014

Sea Shepherd films Japanese fleet is butchered whales INSIDE an international sanctuary
These graphic images depicting the carcass-strewn deck of a Japanese whaling boat were captured by campaigners after they allegedly caught the vessel inside an internationally-recognised sanctuary. Militant anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd says it spotted the Nisshin Maru sailing through the protected Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary during the annual whaling season. As the Sea Shepherd's helicopter flew above the Japanese ship, campaigners shot footage of the blood-streaked deck and the carcasses of three dead minke whales lying on the ship as another creature was butchered. Sea Shepherd said it had spotted the Japanese fleet yesterday and captured evidence that four whales had been slaughtred this morning, alleging the ships were found inside the sanctuary. Campaigners said they had located all five Japanese vessels and were now in pursuit, forcing the harpooners to cut short their operation and retreat. 'There's three carcasses on the ship, a fourth carcass has been cut up. There's blood all over the place, meat being carted around on this factory ship deck, offal and innards being dumped in the ocean,' said Sea Shepherd Australia chairman Bob Brown. 'That's just a gruesome, bloody, medieval scene which has no place in this modern world.' When the Nisshin Maru was first spotted from the air, Dr Brown said it was in Antarctica's Ross Dependency, within New Zealand's territorial waters and the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, which he described as a 'gross breach of international law'. The commercial hunting of whales is prohibited in the sanctuary, which was designated by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in 1994, but Japan catches the animals there under a 'scientific research' loophole in the moratorium on whaling. New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully denied whaling was taking place within his country's maritime jurisdiction, saying the site was considered international waters, as he condemned the 'pointless and offensive' practice. 'The New Zealand government has repeatedly called on Japan to end its whaling programme. We reiterate this message today,' he said. Japan's fisheries agency said its programme was being conducted 'in line with a research plan submitted to the IWC'. 'We are not aware of the existence of a whaling sanctuary so we don't want to comment on their arguments,' an agency spokesman said of Brown's claims. The Japanese foreign ministry said research whaling was 'not a violation or an abuse of a loophole in the international convention'. 'Quite the contrary, this is a legitimate right of the contracting party under Article VIII of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling,' it said. Dr Brown described 'massive violence' against the whales, using grenade-tipped harpoons to catch them, and said Sea Shepherd would do 'all it peaceably can to prevent this grotesque and cruel destruction', also urging Australia and New Zealand to take action. 'There is nothing scientific about this, it is butchery,' Mr Brown said. 'The one thing that's missing here is gumption - a bit of spine in Canberra and in Wellington to put an end to it.' Australia has taken Japan to the International Court of Justice seeking to have its research whaling programme declared illegal, with a ruling due this year. Peter Hammarstedt, captain of the Sea Shepherd ship Bob Barker, said Japan had shown 'flagrant disregard for international law by continuing their illegal whale hunt while the world patiently awaits a decision from the International Court of Justice'. Sea Shepherd left Australia for their 10th annual harassment campaign of the Japanese fleet last month, sending three ships to tail and run interference against the harpooners. High-seas clashes between the two groups are common, resulting in the 2010 sinking of the Sea Shepherd vessel Ady Gil. Australia will be monitoring confrontations between the pair from a government jet which is due to fly surveillance missions over the Southern Ocean between January and March. However, Dr Brown said there had so far been no sign of the aircraft. Japan's whaling fleet has been found inside New Zealand's Ross Dependency region, according to the environment group Sea Shepherd. Its fleet has located all five whaling vessels and filmed one with three dead minke whales on its deck, Sea Shepherd said. The organisation's position data puts the whaling fleet about 1700 kilometres north of Scott Base, beneath the usual Christchurch to McMurdo Sound flight path. Referring to its vessels Steve Irwin, Bob Barker and Sam Simon, Sea Shepherd said it was "in pursuit of the whaling fleet, driving them away from their intended poaching grounds, disrupting their illegal hunt, and preparing to shut down their whale-killing operations". The factory ship Nisshin Maru was first located by a Sea Shepherd helicopter which filmed "compelling footage and images of three dead protected minke whales on the deck of the Nisshin Maru. "A fourth whale, believed to be a minke, was being butchered on the bloodstained deck." The area is part of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. "The Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary has been tainted by the illegal slaughter of these beautiful and majestic minke whales by the ruthless, violent and barbaric actions of the Japanese whale poachers," Sea Shepherd Australia managing director Jeff Hansen said. "No-one will ever know the pain and suffering these playful, gentle giants went through from the time the explosive harpoon ripped through their bodies to the time they drew their last breath in a red sea full of their own blood. One thing is for sure, Sea Shepherd will do what ever it takes to ensure no more whales have to endure pain and suffering at the hands of these whale butchers from Japan." New Zealand last year joined the Australian Government's challenge to the legality of Japan's whale hunt in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary at the International Court of Justice. Judgment on the case is yet to be delivered. The Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary covers 50 million square kilometres of ocean from 40 degrees South to Antarctica. It is recognised by 23 countries. Sea Shepherd said it located Nisshin Maru at 64 degrees 44 minutes south and 162 degrees 34 west. The Ross Sea covers an area between 160 degrees East and 150 degrees West and 60 degrees South. Although technically claimed as part of New Zealand's sovereign waters, the claim is suspended under the Antarctic Treaty. The area the Japanese are sailing through is part of an area that the United States and New Zealand unsuccessfully tried to have declared as part of what would have been the world's largest marine protected area. It was opposed by Russia, Ukraine and South Korea. The area where the whalers and Sea Shepherd are likely to clash is within New Zealand's designated search and rescue area.- published: 05 Jan 2014

A Human Solution
This is a collaborative art piece undertaken by Mathieu Martel and John Ross. Displayed as a looping projection at the Starry Night art festival in Orillia, it is shown here in a different format than originally intended. Therefore, the original artist statement below doesn't coincide with the current way its being shown. However, the intent of the project still remains intact.
Enjoy!
There is no story here, but for what you create while you watch it. And for every person that will be different. War is cyclical, and so is this piece. It has no real beginning, no real end, only in-betweens. And the point at which you start watching it will determine what you think the story is. And, in much the same way that mass media can influence your emotions and feelings on a subject, so too are your emotions and feelings affected by the music.
Because the music and the animation are staggered, depending on when you start watching, different emotional cues will be pronounced. Each scene can play out differently depending on whether there is a crescendo, a soft melody, or a vocal paired with it. With each viewing the story can change entirely.
This is a human problem, and will take a human solution to solve it.

Terminator, The Trophy Wall: WI6 M5, 3 pitches
On Nov 7th 2011, Ross Berg, John Freeman, and I climbed T2 on the Trophy Wall. The conditions were excellent. We left the car at 6:30 and arrived at the alcove below the Trophy wall in approx. 2 hrs. There was little to no snow on the approach and little evidence of previous traffic.
The temps were around -10 C all day, which seamed reasonable considering it is the beginning of the season. Maybe the calm/light winds helped to make us feel more at ease.
There was evidence that a team had already climbed Terminator but on further inspection they had only climbed the first pitch (thanks boys for cleaning it for us, definitely made it more pleasant).
We climbed the route in 3 pitches. The initial pitch was the crux with some mixed climbing to access the upper ice (maybe 4-6 moves depending on how quickly you commit to the hanging dagger). The first pitch was 50m, the second pitch was 50m and the third pitch was 60 m. We brought 14 ice screws and easily placed them all on the 2nd and 3rd pitches.
The ice to the right on Replicant looks fat but sustained. Sea of Vapours is still looking like a very light butt smear, it's to ready yet!.
Hope this video helps anyone interested in going up.
Cheers Joshua
