Air Koryo
Air Koryo (Korean: 고려항공, Koryŏ Hanggong; formerly Chosŏn Minhang, Korean: 조선민항) is the state-owned national flag carrier airline of North Korea, headquartered in Sunan-guyŏk, Pyongyang. Based at Pyongyang Sunan International Airport (IATA: FNJ), it operates international scheduled and charter services to points in Asia and Europe.
Air Koryo has offices in Beijing and Shenyang, China; Vladivostok, Russia; Bangkok, Thailand and Berlin, Germany. There are sales agencies in Tokyo, Japan; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Singapore; Taipei, Taiwan; Hong Kong; Kuwait; Italy; Austria and Germany.
History
Founding
Air Koryo was established first under the name SOKAO (Soviet–North Korean Airline), which was founded in 1950 as a joint North Korean-Soviet concern to connect Pyongyang with Moscow. Services were suspended during the Korean War, to resume in 1953. The current airline was established in 1953 as UKAMPS (renamed Civil Aviation Administration of Korea (CAAK) in the 1970s), started operations on 21 September 1955, and was placed under the control of the Civil Aviation Administration of Korea. CAAK began operations with Lisunov Li-2, Antonov An-2 and Ilyushin Il-12 aircraft. Ilyushin Il-14 and Ilyushin Il-18 turboprops were added to the fleet in the 1960s.

Skytrax is considered to be the global authority when it comes to airline ranking. And in its history, it’s awarded just one carrier a one-star review - the worst review possible. That dishonor belongs to Air Koryo - the flag carrier of North Korea. Now a lot of people in the aviation community actually quite like flying this airline - as it operates a fleet of rare, vintage aircraft. But there’s no denying that its planes are old, ill-kept, and unreliable. Safe to say, flying the airline is dangerous.
Now to be fair, Air Koryo hasn't suffered a fatal crash since the ‘80s - at least, not that we know of. But the great western powers have practically banned them from buying new aircraft, meaning they have to keep flying their old, rickety jets. In September 2016, I travelled to North Korea to attend the country's first ever air show; Wonsan AirShow. It was the most exotic air show I have ever attended, with a line-up of the rare Soviet vintage fleet of Air Koryo, the usual off limits of the North Korean Air Force, many joy flights on Air Koryo and the possibility to meet with North Koreans freely at the air show.
The air show was an unqualified smash hit! showing off North Korea’s aviation scene and bringing together foreign visitors and locals without hindrance, for the first time in the country’s history.
In the video, I also share what's it like to fly on Air Koryo's exotic fleet. From the modern Tupolev 204 to the vintage classic IL-18, IL-62, IL-76 and Tu-154. It is definitely an exotic experience you don't want to miss!

I got the train into the country and I’m flying out of the country on North Korea’s only airline and it’s also the worlds only 1 star airline called Air Koryo! I’ve got a business class seat so I was interested to see what it would be like! With Air Koryo there is no first class, only business class and economy as the flight is only 2 hours back to Beijing! Skytrax is considered to be the global authority when it comes to airline ranking. And in its history, it’s awarded just one carrier a one-star review - the worst review possible. That dishonor belongs to Air Koryo - the flag carrier of North Korea. Now a lot of people in the aviation community actually quite like flying this airline - as it operates a fleet of rare, vintage aircraft. But there’s no denying that its planes are old, ill-kept, and unreliable. Safe to say, flying the airline is dangerous.
Now to be fair, Air Koryo hasn't suffered a fatal crash since the ‘80s - at least, not that we know of. But the great western powers have practically banned them from buying new aircraft, meaning they have to keep flying their old, rickety jets. So, is there anything North Korea can do to upgrade its commercial fleet, or is catastrophe bound to strike? Let me explain…

Air Koryo
Air Koryo (Korean: 고려항공, Koryŏ Hanggong; formerly Chosŏn Minhang, Korean: 조선민항) is the state-owned national flag carrier airline of North Korea, headquartered in Sunan-guyŏk, Pyongyang. Based at Pyongyang Sunan International Airport (IATA: FNJ), it operates international scheduled and charter services to points in Asia and Europe.
Air Koryo has offices in Beijing and Shenyang, China; Vladivostok, Russia; Bangkok, Thailand and Berlin, Germany. There are sales agencies in Tokyo, Japan; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Singapore; Taipei, Taiwan; Hong Kong; Kuwait; Italy; Austria and Germany.
History
Founding
Air Koryo was established first under the name SOKAO (Soviet–North Korean Airline), which was founded in 1950 as a joint North Korean-Soviet concern to connect Pyongyang with Moscow. Services were suspended during the Korean War, to resume in 1953. The current airline was established in 1953 as UKAMPS (renamed Civil Aviation Administration of Korea (CAAK) in the 1970s), started operations on 21 September 1955, and was placed under the control of the Civil Aviation Administration of Korea. CAAK began operations with Lisunov Li-2, Antonov An-2 and Ilyushin Il-12 aircraft. Ilyushin Il-14 and Ilyushin Il-18 turboprops were added to the fleet in the 1960s.
