Robert Fayrfax (April 23, 1464 – October 24, 1521) was an English Renaissance composer, considered the most prominent and influential of the reigns of Kings Henry VII and Henry VIII of England.
He was born in Deeping Gate, Lincolnshire. He had the patronage of the leading cultural figure of Henry VII's court, the king's mother Lady Margaret Beaufort (1443-1509). He became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal by December 6, 1497. He was granted a chaplaincy of the Free Chapel at Snodhill Castle, a post which was given away a year later to Robert Cowper, another Gentleman. He is reported as being organist of St Albans Abbey responsible for the music there from 1498 to 1502. Fayrfax gained a Mus.B. from Cambridge in 1501, and a Mus.D. in 1504; he later acquired a D.Mus. from Oxford (by incorporation) in 1511. He became a member of the Fraternity of St Nicholas in 1502. At the beginning of Henry VIII's reign in 1509 he granted Fayrfax the annuity of a farm in Hampshire and later made him a 'Poor Knight of Windsor' (with a life-time award of twelve pennies a day) on September 10, 1514. He also possessed, and surrendered, two ecclesiastical livings. He received payments for clothes for state occasions and for tutoring choirboys. From 1516, for four consecutive years, he presented the king with collections of his compositions and received financial rewards. In 1520 he led the Chapel Royal in the state visit to France of the Field of the Cloth of Gold. He died in 1521, possibly at St. Albans where he was buried.

Josquin's Missa Ave maris stella is a relatively early work that must have been composed sometime between 1495 and 1505 when it appeared as the opening work in the second book of Josquin's Masses published by Ottaviano Petrucci the Venetian master printer and publisher. It's a cantus firmus work in other words Josquin used the melody of another piece of music as the musical foundation for this setting of the Mass. As the name Missa Ave maris stella might lead you to expect the cantus firmus Josquin used was the Dorian mode Marian hymn of that name and which I include as the starting track in the recording below.

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah - Episode 1521 - 16th October 2014

Of all Fayrfax's works his meditation on the Passion "Maria plena virtute" (Mary full of virtue) is the one that I find the most moving.
markfromireland
Text & Translation: Maria plena virtutate
Dixit Jesus dilectionis " Sitio salutem gentium". Audi orationibus nostris tuae misericordiae, O Jesu. Rex amabilis quid sustulisti pro nobis per merita tuae passionis peto veniam a te. Jesu, dicens clamasti," Deus meus, num quid me dereliquisti" Per acetum quod gustasti ne derelinquas me. "Consummatum." dixisti. O Jesu Fili Dei, in hora exitus mei, animam meam suscipe.
O dolorosa mater Christi, quales poenas tu vidisti, corde tenens habuisti fidem totius ecclesiae. Ora pro me, regina coeli, Filium tuum dicens; "Fili, in hora mortis peccatis suis indulge." Amen.
Mary, full of virtue, pity and grace, mother of mercy, protect us from the enemy. Most gentle Mary, filled with life, pour out, of your compassion, prayers on our behalf, and release me from my sins, just as your son prayed for those crucifying him,"Father, forgive the ignorant." Hanging between two robbers, through his great holiness he said to one of the men,"You will today be in heaven with me and with your ancestors". The grieving mother, filled with tears, destroyed by the sight of her son hanging on the cross, spoke in a hoarse voice, pronouncing her feelings. "Wailing woman", was the reply,"Behold your son." As he turned to the disciple, came the order to console herself with the thought that she had been a mother for a time, and just as she was worthy of a son so ready to be a servant; so he obeyed the instruction to be a servant completely.
Jesus spoke of his choice,"I thirst for the deliverance of the nations." Of your mercy, give ear to our prayers, O Jesus. King most worthy of love, what you endured for us. Through the grace of your suffering I seek pardon from you. Jesus, you called out, saying,"My God, why have you deserted me?"
By the vinegar which you tasted, do not desert me. "It is finished," you said. Jesus, Son of God, take up my soul in the hour of my death.
Then he gave up the ghost, and the sword pierced his mother: water and blood poured out from his tender body. Later, she asked for his body from Arimathea and buried Jesus, and Nicodemus came bearing a mixture of myrrh. O grieving Mother of Christ, what punishments you saw. You had the faith of the whole church, keeping it in your heart.
Pray for me, Queen of Heaven, saying to your son,"Son, forgive your servant's sins in the hour of his death." Amen.

I've written about the great 'O' antiphons frequently, or to be more precise I've written about seven of them. These are the seven antiphons that are sung in the week before Christmas starting with 'O Sapientia' and concluding ón December 23rd with 'O Emmanuel' most people think that these seven antiphons – the 'Great Antiphons' as they are often referred to are the only antiphons for this time, but this is wrong in fact there are other antiphons which are proper to this week as the list below which I take from Guéranger shows:
* Dec. 17: O Sapientia (I)
* Dec. 18: O Adonai (II)
* Dec. 18: The Expectation Of The Blessed Virgin Mary (O Virgo virginum)
* Dec. 19: O Radix Jesse (III)
* Dec. 20: O Clavis David (IV), plus O Gabriel!
* Dec. 21: Saint Thomas, Apostle
* Dec. 21: O Oriens (V)
* Dec. 22: O Rex Gentium (VI), plus O Rex pacifice
* Dec. 23: O Emmanuel (VII), plus O Hierusalem!
* Dec. 24: Christmas Eve - The Vigil Of Christmas (Generally: Advent)
Of these 'extra' antiphons perhaps the best known is O Virgo virginum which is the antiphon for the Feast of The Expectation Of The Blessed Virgin Mary. This was sung in England under the Sarum rite and also in Spain where the cult of The Virgin was – and is, particularly strong. During Josquin's time it was also popular in Rome which presumably is why he composed this very beautiful setting of it. I think it must be a relatively early work – by which I mean written relatively early on during Josquin's Roman period so 1480 or not long thereafter. It's a six-part setting that combines strict cantus firmus writing with some hauntingly beautiful free-flowing polyphony. It's almost Burgundian in sound and I can't help thinking that he wrote it as part of his tribute to Ockeghem and Regis. Enjoy :-).

Quia nec primam similem visa es nec habere sequentem. .
Filiae Ierusalem, quid me admiramini?
Divinum est mysterium hoc quod cernitis.
O Virgin of Virgins How shall this take place?
Neither before thee was there any like Thee, nor after.
Maidens of Jerusalem why do you wonder in me?
It is a divine mystery, that which you behold.

* Dec. 17: O Sapientia (I)
* Dec. 18: O Adonai (II)
* Dec. 18: The Expectation Of The Blessed Virgin Mary (O Virgo virginum)
* Dec. 19: O Radix Jesse (III)
* Dec. 20: O Clavis David (IV), plus O Gabriel!
* Dec. 21: Saint Thomas, Apostle
* Dec. 21: O Oriens (V)
* Dec. 22: O Rex Gentium (VI), plus O Rex pacifice
* Dec. 23: O Emmanuel (VII), plus O Hierusalem!
Enjoy :-).

Josquin Des Prez (±1450 - 1521): Missa Ave Maris Stella
Josquin's Missa Ave maris stella is a relatively early work that must have been composed sometime between 1495 and 1505 when it appeared as the opening work in the second book of Josquin's Masses published by Ottaviano Petrucci the Venetian master printer and publisher. It's a cantus firmus work in other words Josquin used the melody of another piece of music as the musical foundation for this setting of the Mass. As the name Missa Ave maris stella might lead you to expect the cantus firmus Josquin used was the Dorian mode Marian hymn of that name and which I include as the starting track in the recording below.
This hymn which was appointed to be sung at First Vespers on feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary was very popular and very greatly loved. Even as Gregorian chant there are six settings of it that I know of and there could well have been more there's also a very well-known setting by Dufay. Not being one to pass up an opportunity Josquin's setting makes heavy use of it as a cantus firmus. You can hear it throughout the Mass both as a structural voice subject to embellishment or as the foundation for some highly developed imitation. It's a really stunning setting in which Josquin somehow manages to combine some quite severe contrapuntal writing with intensely declamatory treatment of the text and numinous euphony.
It's a compositional tour de force in which Josquin clearly set out to show what he could do. I find it very difficult to pick out one highlight over another so I'll confine myself to mentioning just a few points. There's some very fine four-part writing at the start of the Gloria. When we come to 'Qui tollis' Josquin augments the intensity by shifting the mood inward and the pace down, while in the Credo the 'Et incarnatus est' is truly lovely. Josquin changes the mood at 'Et resurrexit' to highlight the fervour and joy caused by that event and sustains this elevated mood to the movement's end. The Sanctus has some wonderfully energetic (and hard to sing) writing at 'Pleni sunt caeli'. All of these are superb but the 'Hosannah is spectacular, for this Josquin takes the cantus firmus – the Marian hymn in the tenor and sustains it from the very first bar right through to the end in the tenor line. He weaves the other voices around this central thread over long stretches but he allows them to take a respite before they re-join the tenor they do this in sequences singing and resting the effect is one of a somewhat severe rhythmical ostinato and makes for some remarkably powerful music. In complete contrast to this is the concluding third part of the Agnus Dei which is a tranquil limpid flowing piece of four-part writing. It's a wonderfully balanced piece of writing with a mellowness and tonal depth unequalled even by such luminaries as de Lassus and Palestrina the flow is which features a strict canon between superius and tenor takes the cantus firmus to its logical conclusion thus triumphantly concluding the Mass. When he was writing the program notes for their own recording of it the Tallis Scholars' Peter Philips said that this Mass is "Josquin at his most inventive and his most inspired". Yes indeed. Enjoy :-).

Of all Fayrfax's works his meditation on the Passion "Maria plena virtute" (Mary full of virtue) is the one that I find the most moving.
