Weimar
Weimar is a city in Germany famous for its cultural heritage. It is located in the federal state of Thuringia , north of the Thüringer Wald, east of Erfurt, and southwest of Halle and Leipzig. Its current population is approximately 65,000. The oldest record of the city dates from the year 899. Weimar was the capital of the Duchy (after 1815 the Grand Duchy) of Saxe-Weimar (German Sachsen-Weimar).
Weimar's cultural heritage is vast. It is most often recognised as the place where Germany's first democratic constitution was signed after the First World War, giving its name to the Weimar Republic period in German politics, of 1918–1933. However, the city was also the focal point of the German Enlightenment and home of the leading characters of the literary genre of Weimar Classicism, the writers Goethe and Schiller. Many places in the city centre have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Ich Lubbe Berlin!
www.reakt.org/ich_lubbe_berlin
The Reichstag fire, a pivotal event in the establishment of Nazi Germany, began at 9:14 PM on the night of February 27, 1933, when a Berlin fire station received an alarm that the Reichstag building, assembly location of the German Parliament, was ablaze. The fire seemed to have been started in several places, and by the time the police and firemen arrived a huge explosion had set the main Chamber of Deputies in flames. Looking for clues, the police quickly found Marinus van der Lubbe, shirtless, inside the building. Van der Lubbe was a Dutch insurrectionary council communist and unemployed bricklayer who had recently arrived in Germany.
Adolf Hitler and Hermann Göring arrived soon after, and, when they were shown van der Lubbe, Göring immediately declared the fire was set by the Communists and had the party leaders arrested. Hitler declared a state of emergency and encouraged aging president Paul von Hindenburg to sign the Reichstag Fire Decree, suspending the basic rights provisions of the Weimar constitution.
The Nazi leaders were determined to demonstrate the Reichstag Fire was a deed of the Comintern.

PoCG 2008 Stephan Günzel - Interaction and Space in Computer Games
The presentation deals with a paradigmatic shift observable in recent computer game research; games today are first and foremost conceived as a new medium characterized by their status as an interactive image. The shift in attention towards this aspect becomes apparent in a new approach that is, first and foremost, aware of the spatiality of games or their spatial structures. This rejects traditional approaches on the basis that the medial specificity of games can no longer be reduced to textual or ludic properties, but have to be seen in medial constituted spatiality. The lecture will therefore resume seminal studies on the spatiality of computer games and discuss their advantages and disadvantages, suggesting three essential steps in describing computer games against the backdrop of an eminent philosophical method, namely phenomenology: with this method it is possible to describe games with respect to the possible appearance of spatiality in a pictorial medium. Though already sometimes implicitly practiced in computer game studies, this method has yet to be made explicit.
Dr. Stephan Günzel is assistant professor in the DFG-research project “Mediality of Computer Games at the Department for Media and Arts at the University of Potsdam. His research interests are Picture Theory, Spatial Theory and Media Theory. He held teaching and research positions at the Universities of Berlin, Jena, Lüneburg, Magdeburg and Weimar. www.stephan-guenzel.de
