Secretary of State John Kerry toured a factory in Beijing Saturday and announced a new joint partnership with China to work on curbing emissions and output of greenhouse gases that trap solar heat in the atmosphere. (Feb. 15)The China Factor. Open for Business: China has surged pas the United States as the leader in producing clean energy technology. But whats really behind the drive? In the latest installment in his series, The China Factor, Chief Correspondent Tyler Suiters takes a look at Chinas energy business from the inside-out, and finds out whether China and the U.S. really need to compete to produce clean energy. Energy Then. Chinas Search for Power: Chinas quest to develop its own fossil fuels isnt new. This film from 1963 describes the countrys abundant coal, oil and iron reserves, and notes its struggle to bring electricity to its population. The solution, says the narrator, is Chinas most abundant resource--the population itself--and putting those people to work to develop those resources. Interviews: EU Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard and Sen. John Kerry. Tyler Suiters sits down for separate one-on-one interviews with European Union Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard and U.S. Senator John Kerry to ask: Is the United States to blame for failed climate negotiations? Hedegaard spearheads the E.U.s drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build a clean energy economy. She was one of the driving forces behind the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference. Kerry has been an outspoken advocate for reducing U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, and was an architect of the proposed national cap-and-trade legislation that failed in the U.S. Senate last year.US Secretary of State John Kerry will make his fifth trip to North and Southeast Asia on Thursday, stopping in China, South Korea and Indonesia for climate change and North Korea talks. The globe-trotting top US diplomat will also visit Abu Dhabi at the end of his February 13-18 voyage. In Seoul, Kerry will discuss ways to expand the cooperation on regional and global issues, and continue close coordination... on North Korea. Kerry last visited Seoul in April, and the new trip comes just after Washington learned that a US citizen has been returned to a labour camp after having been hospitalized for poor health. In Beijing, Kerry will highlight the role that the United States and China -- the worlds top emitters of greenhouse gases blamed for global warming -- can play in combating climate change. On Friday, Kerry reaffirmed a 1960 treaty with Japan and vowed the US would defend its ally against attack, including over islands claimed by China. After China, the top US diplomat will then travel to Jakarta for talks with senior Indonesian leaders, before heading to Abu Dhabi, where his discussions are likely to focus on Middle East peace and the conflict in Syria.Kerry in China Seeking Help in Easing Tensions in N. Korea, Maritime Disputes
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Beijing for talks aimed at encouraging Chinese leaders to put more pressure on ally North Korea to end its nuclear weapons program.

Kerry began his visit by meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijings Great Hall of the People. He also met other senior leaders, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Afterwards, Kerry described his meeting with Xi as very constructive and positive.

We hope that 2014 will be a year of concrete progress in defining the new modern relationship, managing our differences effectively, and finding a way to cooperate practically wherever possible, said Kerry.

Kerry arrived in the Chinese capital early Friday from South Korea, where he met with President Park Geun-hye. The meeting came as North and South Korea held their highest-level talks in seven years.

In Seoul, Kerry said China has a unique and critical role in persuading Pyongyang to resume talks on its nuclear program. He acknowledged Beijings help in recent months, but said China can do more as the leading supplier of fuel and banking services to North Korea.

The North quit the six-nation talks in 2009. It has since rebuilt some of its nuclear facilities and alarmed a host of regional and Western governments with several underground nuclear tests.

Responding to Kerrys comments, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said Friday that Beijing has been putting forward its best efforts in dealing with Pyongyang.

We have always believed the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula should be solved through the framework of the six-party talks. At the same time, we want to find a balanced solution to the legitimate and reasonable concerns of North Korea, said Hua.

Kerry is also expected to raise the issue of Chinas maritime disputes with its neighbors, which have sent Beijings relations with Japan and others plummeting in recent months.

Washington has been critical of what it sees as Chinas attempts to gain control over contested pa

Millions of Syrians are trapped in hard to reach or besieged areas across Syria. On Thursday, 6 February, the parties to the conflict in Syria agreed under UN auspices to a three day \'humanitarian pause\' in the Old City of Homs in order to allow the evacuation of the critically ill, women and children and the delivery of aid supplies to some 2,500 people trapped in the city for the past one year and eight months. UN agencies, including the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), working alongside the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), met the evacuees, provided them with food and medical care.

A blistering winter blizzard covered large swaths of the Northeast U.S. in snow Thursday, canceling flights, shutting down highways and prompting schools to say they\'d be closed Friday.

More than 100 million people — almost one-third of the U.S. population — was in the path of a storm that started battering the Midwest and the East Coast with snow early Thursday. By late Thursday night, the National Weather Service said 21 in. of snow had fallen in a town just north of Boston. Millions of Americans have hunkered down in anticipation of a record-setting "polar vortex" expected to bring dangerously low temperatures to much of the United States. The rotating pool of cold, dense air was forecast to affect more than half of the continental US throughout Sunday and into Monday and Tuesday, with wind-chill warnings stretching from Montana to Alabama. The Arctic blast could send temperatures in the US to their lowest in two decades. Weather forecasters said with the wind chill, temperatures could plunge as low as -51C in some areas, prompting authorities in several towns and cities to warn residents to stay indoors and stock up on food. Korea, Maritime Disputes U.S.
